The Weekly Gazette. ESTABLISHED 1870 SUBSCRIPTION - $1.50 Per Year HENRY KUCHEL, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR Six months...$1.00 Three months...50cts Payable invariably in advance. The Gazette is issued every Thursday morning. Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter. TO STEAL THE STATE Gen. George Stone, creature of Herrin, by grace of the railroad push chairman of the republican state central committee, in an interview given out in San Francisco this week said: "As a majority of the republicans who voted at the unofficial primary declared Roosevelt their first and Taft their second choice for president of the United States, the delegates will probably be so instructed by the state convention." Nothing is too damnable for the red-handed political bandits of the railroad push to attempt, in carrying out the orders of their superiors. Well knowing that Roosevelt is not a candidate, nevertheless this band of political pirates would bind the state hand and foot and prevent it from casting its vote for Taft. The "informal primary" was simply a means to this end. The political situation in California is rotten to the core. The state machine now comes out into the open. THE STATE SENATOR The Orange county convention, in session at Thursday, instructed delegates from this county senatorial district council which meets at Riverside not to vote for Estudillo harg for state senator. The Riverside county tion, which met on Friday structured the ten delegates to county to vote for Estudillo senator "first, last and time." When an irresistible force an immovable object, happens, in politics as matters. Something is to happen at the senatorial tion. We note a dispatch from side that two delegates to range county (Messrs. Whiting Morrison) will break away their instructions and vote tudillo, thus giving him nation. This not only to Riverside the right of superior degree of politic than that which obtains in county, but is a foul accusation on the honor of these two men. There will be no break from instructions on the public Orange delegation. Their traitors in the delegation, erside might just as well now as at any other time. velt is not a candidate, nevertheless this band of political pirates would bind the state hand and foot and prevent it from casting its vote for Taft. The "informal primary" was simply a means to this end. The political situation in California is rotten to the core. The state machine now comes out into the open and shows its hand. How long will the clean, anti-machine republicans of the state stand for this sort of thing? Many prominent republicans of Orange county refused to stand as delegates to last week's county convention, declaring the political situation was too rank for them. This is true of many counties of the state. But this latest outburst of the chairman of the state central committee sounds a clarion call to all good republicans to rise in their might and crush out the railroad machine, even if its past misdeeds do not. The important primary of the year occurs August 11th. Let every republican in Orange county who remained away from the primaries, and all similar republicans throughout the state, buckle on their armor and participate in the August primaries. The honor of the state calls; can they refuse? The machine has been dealt a death blow, yet there remains some cussedness in its being. Let all republicans rise in their might, and smite it hip and thigh. Stone's outburst called forth a prompt inquiry by telegraph from Taft's manager, at Washington, D.C., to Stone, asking what today's convention would probably do as to the presidential nomination. Stone replied: "I believe the convention will indorse Taft, and I think it man instructs for him." superior degree of politic than that which obtains in county, but is a foul accusation on the honor of these two men. Stone's outburst called forth a prompt inquiry by telegraph from Taft's manager, at Washington, D.C., to Stone, asking what today's convention would probably do as to the presidential nomination. Stone replied: "I believe the convention will indorse Taft, and I think it may instruct for him." Probably the old railroader was not feeling well when he gave out his first interview. At any rate, the republican party is to be congratulated upon the coming retirement from the state central committee of this amiable old machine politician. He was swept off the boards in the San Francisco primaries, and will pass into merited political oblivion. Let the republicans of Orange county purify the party of all machine snipe-shooters, Southern Pacific spittoon-cleaners, and wild asses of politics wherever found. Out with them! J. Hahn on Thursday last brought suit in the superior court to contest the election of F. A. Gates, who defeated him for city trustee by one vote. Hahn makes the claim that a number of ballots bearing his name were thrown out on account of alleged irregularity in being improperly marked on the Sunday closing question. These votes, he declares, if counted for him would give him the election. The case will be heard by Superior Judge West, and whichever way the decision goes, the case will probably be carried to the supreme court. As the temporary chairman appoints all committees for the organization of the convention, the control of the convention is in a large measure in his hands. That is why the election of the temporary chairman usually shows the strength of the contending forces in a convention, and the victors take charge of the proceedings. Such an attempted usurpation of power by the Southern Pacific machine and its bosses is as rank push politics as was ever attempted outside of city slums. But what better could be expected of a convention dominated by Abe Reuf, Walter Parker, Jere Burke and the other henchmen of Herrin who ran the convention? Every convention has been a law unto itself in determining the plan of its organization and procedure; and whoever heard of the chairman of one convention appointing the chairman of another! The Southern Pacific controls absolutely the state committee of the republican party, and it is an insult to the citizenship of the state for Boss Herrin to assume to name the chairman of today's convention; yet that is just what he means to do. But the Lincoln-Roosevelt league has risen in protest against such brazen attempt on the part of the WITH YOU, MR. MORRISON We been elected chairman republican county central state. There are no in the delegation, and Rivight just as well know it any other time. Ober and Morrison are Estudillo. They are for a honorable man for senator Thirty-ninth district. They waitors. But the Lincoln-Roosevelt league has risen in protest against such brazen attempt on the part of the railroad to override the will of the people and perpetuate itself in power. Such unrepublican and un-American usurpation of power will certainly not be tolerated by the republicans of California. The independent republicans of the state, who do not wear the collar of the Southern Pacific and who favor a free party and clean politics, will be in a majority in that convention and will surely not stand for such methods. WAS IT ABE? The scheme to have the Southern Pacific state central committee appoint the chairman of the next republican convention instead of having the chairman elected by the convention, as has always been the case heretofore, must surely have been hatched in the fertile brain of Abe Reuf. The little curly-headed ex-boss was a shining light in the Santa Cruz convention, and "for ways that are dark and tricks that are vain" in politics, he has no superior in the state. But the people are not going to put up with the machine bosses and their corrupt methods any longer. Every such attempt to defraud the people is another nail in the coffin of the machine, whose demise and burial will be celebrated by the people of the state with fitting ceremonial at the state primaries August 11th. ITS DOOM IS SOUNDED The reports which come in from all parts of the state give the leaders of the Lincoln-Roosevelt republican league increasing assurance that its forces will dominate today’s republican state convention, in spite of the wild claims of the railroad press. Nothing will avail to save the machine except the possible success of the scheme planned by Herrin, Abe Ruef and others to steal the chairmanship of the convention; but the decent republicans will undoubtedly be in sufficient majority in the convention to foil the attempt. Should the league unhorse the machine in the first skirmish, it would be a phenomenal achievement. So incomplete is its organization that it had not dared to hope for so much.
