"Revision" in California
Speaker Cannon is recognized as the champion stand-patter of the Republican party, and some interest has been felt to see what the Illinois convention would say about the tariff while proposing Speaker Cannon as a candidate for the presidency. Some may have looked for a mere repetition of the tariff plank of 1904, which declared for the changes in the tariff only "when conditions required it." Most, however, recognized that the country was hungering and thirsting after another tariff campaign and must have it, but thought that the Illinois republicans would declare in favor of "adjusting" the tariff rather than "revising" it, as the latter word seems to have been preempted by the free traders as meaning "reduction," while "adjustment" would indicate a probability of increases as well as reductions. Upon consultation, our Illinois brethren decided to stand for "revision," as that seems the fashionable term and may mean a uniform increase, or a uniform reduction, or some increases and some reductions.
As our California convention will in due time fall in for "revision" with the rest, it is quite time for the good people of this state to decide whether they prefer an increase or decrease of duties on California products. The following are the present duties on a number of important productions of this state:
Prunes 2 cents per pound
Raisins 2½ cents per pound
Dried fruits (other) 2 cents per pound.
Oranges, 1 cent per pound.
Lemons, 1 cent per pound.
Almonds, 4 cents per pound.
Walnuts, 3 cents per pound.
Olive oil, 40 cents per gallon.
Dry wines, 40 cents per gallon.
Sweet wines, 50 per gallon.
Brandy, $2.25 per gallon.
be howling for "revision," and if we want those duties left up as they are we are nobody but stand-patters. We should know, for example, whether growers are in favor of a raise in the duty on hops. Orange-growers and the prune-makers might be claimed that we enthusiasts for revision expect our beneficent Eastern friend send the big delegations to will promptly reduce the debt their manufactured "trust goods while leaving the duties products as they are, or perhaps them a little. There is no tion for that claim. There is a donkey in California as to be such thing. Even our idiots know the section which has the biggest Congress will get the raises sections which have the smallest will get the reductions. A means us. In every "recovery treaty which the President shall California is stung.—San Francisco article.
Gold and Silver Produce
The production of gold and silver from the United States from domestics in 1906, by states and territories shown in the accompanying tables presented are the result of reference and adjustment between bureau of the mint and the survey, and are accepted as first two bureaus. This table is from data collected by the mint, showing bullions deferred by the United States mints offices, and from statements received that bureau from smelting and establishments. The foregoing were all, we believe, decided increases over the tariff in force before the Dingley act. And an awful time we had getting them. Delegation after delegation was sent on to Washington to fight for the interest of this and that industry and for months solicitors for subscriptions to pay the expenses of those delegations were ever with us. Anxious care was on every face, for upon the action of Congress it depended whether many continue in business or not. Evidently, however, we enjoy the memory of those days, for our republican convention, when it meets expressing without doubt the real feeling of an enthusiastic, if silly, majority, will whoop it up for “revision” with the rest.
And now, what do Californians who will send delegates to vote for “revision” mean by that term?
Do they desire a reduction or an increase in the duties on prunes, raisins, oranges, hops and the rest, not to mention grain, lumber, eggs, hay and a multitude of other of our products not named in the foregoing list? We must want some change or we should not

Drying preparations simply develop dry catarrh; they dry up the secretions, which adhere to the membrane and decompose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. Avoid all drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm will master catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. All druggists sell the 50 cent size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren Street, New York.
The Balm is used without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads itself over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation.
Ely's Cream Balm contains no cocaine, mercury nor other harmful drugs.

Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free.

It will be noted that Colorado leads California in the production of gold,
the difference being over $3,000,000 in favor of the Centenial State. Colorado is also one of the leading states in the production of silver, being a very close second to Montana, that leads in the production of this meatal. Nevada is the third state in the production of gold for the first time, we believe, in its history. That great silver producing state is certainly "making good" as a source of the more valuable metal.
The total silver production is less than half that of gold, but over 56,000,-000 ounces of silver is a big total. If silver were worth a dollar an ounce, as it once was, the value of the silver production would run close to $60,-000,000 instead of less than $40,000,000.
Obviously Congressional opinion is at last awakened to the necessity of a thorough and scientific revision of our currency legislation. The Aldrich bill has gone over to the House unchanged in its essential features, but improved in several details. And now a currency commission is proposed to consider the entire subject, and a measure providing for an inquiry into the changes and reforms required in the banking systems of the country is promised to the senate by Mr. Aldrich. The idea is not unworthy of adoption as public sentiment on the currency question must be favorably developed ere any reform of a permanent nature can be instituted.
