TOWN DRY ON SUNDAYS Stubbornly Fought Contest and Heavy Vote Pooled—Gates Noses Out Ahead of Hahn for Trustee—Boege Elected Five hundred and fourteen votes were polled at the municipal election on Monday. The poll was the heaviest ever cast in the town. Several spirited contests, apart from that upon closing saloons on Sundays, conspired to the result. The town went dry on the Sabbath by a vote of 243 to 223. Stock and Gates were elected trustees, the latter nosing out ahead of Hahn by a vote of 244 to 243. Stock was high man, with 302, and Rimpau brought up the rear with 128. Merritt for city clerk had a walkover polling 396 votes. Emmett, opposition candidate for marshal, made a poor showing against Steadman, polling only 150 votes to his successful opponent’s 322. Forty-two electors declined to express a choice between the two candidates. Boege for treasurer defeated Hartung by a vote of 275 to 207. As a result, city funds will be transferred from the First National to the German-American bank. Report of Library, April 1st No. of volumes 1482. CIRCULATION Jan. Feb. As a result, city funds will be transferred from the First National to the German-American bank. The vote on permitting the sale of liquor on Sunday was: Yes, 223; no, 243. An ordinance will be prepared at the next meeting of city trustees closing saloons on Sundays. An ordinance closing pool and billiard rooms, bowling alleys, and front cigar stands, has passed first reading, and only awaits decision by the supreme court in a test case to have it enacted into law. The drys were elated when the result of the contest was announced, while the wets were correspondingly dejected. Talk of absolute prohibition was heard, while others favored lessening the number of saloons and increasing the license. FULLERTON Fullerton polled 377 votes. The People's ticket was successful in every instance except that of marshal. The vote was as follows: Wm. Coulter Jr. 184, August Hiltscher 214, J. H. Clever 180, Wm. Crowther 216. These were the People's candidates. The first two were elected for four-year terms, the latter for two years. Citizens' ticket—W. L. Hale 165, H. W. Schulz 136, Lilly 163, J. A. Vail 140. Clerk—Scofil 202, Fuller 156. Treasurer—Collis 215, Dean 139. Marshal—Ruddock 201, Lindhurst 153. Sixteen votes were thrown out, having been improperly marked. It was charged that the People's candidates for trustee favor calling a special election to vote upon the question of licensing saloons, but this is denied. The band was out serenading the winners. ORANGE. The Citizens' ticket, R. C. Dalton, Adolph Dittmer and J. P. Boring, were unanimously elected city trustees for four years. C. W. Hallman was elected clerk and K. E. Watson treasurer. The band was out serenading the winners. ORANGE. The Citizens’ ticket, R. C. Dalton, Adolph Dittmer and J. P. Boring, were unanimously elected city trustees for four years. C. W. Hallman was elected clerk and K. E. Watson treasurer. Sam Jernegan was re-elected marshal. The election was very quiet, as there were no important issues before the people. The saloon question was not up for vote. NEWPORT BEACH Monday’s election resulted in the choice of C. A. Barton, F. W. Beckwith, J. Ferguson, John McMillan and A. N. Smith for city trustees; L. S. Wilkinson, clerk; Albert Hermes, marshal; Lew H. Wallace, treasurer. All the trustees elected oppose saloons, as now existing, but it is possible that license may be granted if a saloon of higher class is established. The direct issue of saloon or no saloon was not made in the campaign, but all the trustees elected, with the possible exception of Smith, incline to abolition of the saloon. The general opinion is that the election of the successful ticket is an anti-saloon victory. Record-breaking passenger travel over the Santa Fe has been the rule this week. The people have but one objective point—San Diego and the battleship fleet. Next Saturday Newport Beach and Bay City. See advertisements on eighth page. Mrs. Wallace Randal of Losbeth with Mrs. Frank Miller last Wednesday. ana Hodel returned to Long Fire at Fullerton At 3.45 on Friday morning a telephone message from Fullerton brought the startling information that the town was in imminent danger of destruction by fire, and asking that assistance be sent. Twenty men were hastily summoned and the host cart, drawn by Stock & Backs' dray team, was soon on the run for our neighboring town. Arriving there, it was found the fire had attained considerable headway in the block on the west side of Spadra road, north of Commonwealth avenue. There being no fireplugs, the hosemen were unable to get a stream upon the fire. To the dismay of the fire fighters, it was found there were absolutely no means of fighting the fire except by the use of garden hose and a bucket brigade. The boys from this city lent a ready hand and fought the fire bravely for an hour and a half. A tank upon the roof of the Dean building prevented the fire from spreading. The brick wall of this building stayed the progress of the fire, but the roof was several times ablaze. A garden hose attached to the tank saved the building. Four frame structures were destroyed. The loss is estimated at $10,-000 with little insurance. Plate-glass windows in the block on the east side of Spadra road were cracked by the heat, and for a time great danger threatened for the spread of the fire to Brookhurst her and son of Denver, Col., friends, Mr. and Mrs. Frank a pleasant surprise by visit them on Wednesday and Mrs. J. The fleet was welcomed by Gov. Gillett and a party of distinguished state officials. San Diego is in gala attire, and an elaborate program of festivities in honor of the officers and jackies is in progress. The fleet will depart from San Diego on Friday afternoon. The Santa Fe is running fifteen extra trains to San Diego to accommodate the large crowd of sight-seers. Travel is the heaviest in the history of the road. The ships will pass Newport Beach on Saturday afternoon at 1,30. An admiral's salute of thirteen bombs will be exploded on the beach. The ships will pass close inshore and will be seen by probably the largest crowd ever gathered at the beach. The Southern Pacific will run extra trains to the beach during the day, returning in the afternoon and evening. A special train will run over the Southern Pacific to San Pedro on Saturday evening. Shot at Serenaders Walter Hall of Hynes, a small town across the Los Angeles county border, was married last week, and on Saturday evening his neighbors tendered him a tinpan serenade. Walter crawled under his porch and when the serenaders arrived fired both barrels of a shotgun at them. He had another shotgun with him, prepared to use it if necessary, but the crowd dispersed at the first volley. White Fly Scare Over Horticultural commissioners in the different counties of the Sacramento valley have been making a thorough search for the White fly, fearing that it might have spread from Marysville and Oroville, but reports from all sources indicate that it is as yet confined to those two points and that it is pretty well under control there. Of course, there is still danger of infection from one or the other of these points, but the pest is so thoroughly under control that this danger has been reduced to a minimum and, with proper care, hereafter there will be little danger to be apprehended of this pest reaching the orange sections of the south.
