ENGLAND SAYS NO ALUM IN FOOD and strictly prohibits the sale of alum baking powder— So does France So does Germany The sale of alum has been made illegal in Washington and the District of C bia, and alum baking powders are everywhere recogniz injurious. To protect yourself against all when ordering baking powder Say plainly— ROYAL BAKING POWDER and be very sure you get Royal. Royal is the only Baking Powder made from Royal C Cream of Tartar. It adds to the digestibility and w someness of the food. Y. M. C. A. The final meeting of the county committee of the Young Men's Christian Association for the current year was held at the home of Dr. Johnston on Tuesday evening. Reports showed that the work had opened up over the county with remarkable success. The demand for local organizations from Orange and Fullerton has made it necessary to secure a county physical director to assist Mr. Douglas, and a very effective man was found in the person of E. J. Ruenitz, and he has been at work for two months. The Bible study classes and physical culture has reached a point so satisfactory that Mr. Ruenitz can now give attention to other points, and Anaheim is the next field to be opened. The student band has brought the young men of the city into closer touch with the organization and it is now planned to push the work here by continuing the literary work, organizing Bible study classes and arranging for outdoor athletics. Just as soon as arrangements can be made for a location and building a gymnaseum and reading room will be opened. Negotiations are now under way looking to the securing of a suitable site for the outdoor athletics, which will consist of teams, hand ball, base ball and other sports. An attempt will be made to secure a permanent location in the near future. Holy Week at Catholic Church Special Holy Week services will begin on Sunday April 12. Minutes of Water Board Anaheim, April 4, 1908 Regular meeting of the board of directors of the Anaheim Union water company. J. H. It has been my good fortune during the past few months to revive old friend-ship with some of the old-time residents, and to make new friends among those who have come here more recently. My relation to all public questions was expressed by the old Roman poet when he said:—"I am a man, and there is nothing human in which I am not interested." Matters affecting the morals of a community touch me to the quick. Having stated these things I want to make my contribution to the question now before the people of Anaheim. In a recent issue of your paper there was a communication which consisted chiefly of a quotation from a parish paper, giving the personal opinion of the parish clergyman, and nothing more. Those who sent you the communication sought to make it appear that his statements represented the position of the Episcopal Church throughout the United States, and that that position was strongly opposed to the Anti-Saloon League and all its works. The statement, if it had appeared only in his little parish sheet, along with his notices of parochial affairs, would have been too small a matter to call for notice. But a place in your columns gave it more importance. A copy of it was sent to the Bishop of the Episcopal church for Southern California, and in justice to the whole community I send you the pith of Bishop Johnson's reply. "The Church has so unequivocably placed herself upon the side of the temperance movement that she can hardly be charged with responsibility for any such article as is alleged to have Ames that the board cannot enthe proposition. "The Church has so unequivocably placed herself upon the side of the temperance movement that she can hardly be charged with responsibility for any such article as is alleged to have appeared in a little parish paper in an inconspicuous place in the east. I wholly disclaim the right of any such man as the editor of that paper to speak either for his own diocese, or, for that matter even his own parish, and certainly not for the whole church. The elimination of the saloon is the one thing above all others that Christian men and women should seek to bring about. Drinking at a bar has been the curse of our country." So far for Bishop Johnson and the Episcopal church. Now let me cite some facts which are on the records of the courts of Alabama and Georgia. Alabama and Georgia became prohibition states on the 1st of January, 1908. In his report to the mayor of Birmingham, at the end of the first month of prohibition, Judge N. B. Feagin makes the following statement: "In comparing January, 1908, under prohibition, with January, 1907, with saloons, the decrease in arrests averages about as follows: total number of arrests, decrease 33½ per cent; for assault with intent to murder decrease 22 per cent; gambling 17 per cent; drunkenness 80 per cent; disorderly conduct 35 per cent; burglary and grand larceny 33 per cent; vagrancy 40 per cent; wife beating 70 per cent." There were 33 arrests for drunkenness in January 1908, as against 174 for the same month of 1907. There were 56 arrests for disorderly conduct in January 1908, against 90 for the same month of 1907. The record of arrests for the month of January show even a more extraordinary decrease in Atlanta than in Birmingham. For the month of January 1907, 1653 cases were put on the docket of the Recorder’s Court in Atlanta. For the month of January 1907, 1653 cases were put on the docket of the Recorder’s Court in Atlanta. During the month of January 1908, on the other hand, there were but 768 cases, a decrease of considerable more than 50 per cent. During January 1907, there were 341 cases of drunkenness tried, but in 1908 only 64, a decrease of more than 80 per cent, With such figures before him can any one question the transforming influence of the “Elimination of the Saloon?” Can any one who knows anything of human life and its conditions fail to see that just in the proportion in which there has been a lessening in the need for repressive court and police agencies, there must also have been a corresponding elevation in the industry, the thrift, and the orderliness of society, and a new atmosphere in many homes into which at last a sweeter and gentler and purer spirit had come to dwell?
