Fruit Men Win Point San Francisco, March 11.—The following telegram was received to-day from Author R. Briggs, president of the California Board of Trade, and chairman of the Furit Growers’ Executive Committee, who, with W. H. Brailsford, of Kings county, went to Washington March 3 to endeavor to secure from the Agricultural Department a prompt official announcement that the suspension of ruling 76, made in official announcement No. 89 some days ago, should prevail throughout the season of 908 instead of “pending the determination by the referee board of the wholesomeness or unwholesomeness,” etc. “Successful. Have secured officially singed declaration from Secretary Wilson of Agricultural Department, that for fruit season of 1908 cured in accordance with ruling 89 there will be no governmental interference either with curing or marketing of the crop, no matter what the finding of the referee board may be. Fruit growers of California can now proceed with their work with entire safety. Notify all members of committee. I will remain here until after referee board meets to organize on the 25th.” This puts the whole matter under the general operations of the pure food law without regard to the .035 of one per cent sulphur, as far as the crop of 1908 is concerned, and lets the determination of the permissible amount of sulphur by the referee board become effective after 1908 as may be ordered. This official declaration means millions to the fruit drying industry of California and other States as well. Caution should be had, however, says the State board of trade, not to overput sulphur in terms of general practice and thereby transgress the general provisions of the pure food law. At a wayside station boarded the train, sat down in my department, and lighted a vile claustro. "This is not a smoking-carriage said I. "All right, governor, said that I'll just finish this pipe here." He finished it, then resilled it. "See here," I said, "I told you wasn't a smoking-carriage. persist with that pipe, I shall you at the next station to the guild." "I banded him my card. He at it, pocketed it, but lighted his nevertheless. At the next station however, he changed to another department. "Calling a guard, I told him had occurred, and demanded the smoker’s name and address be taken." "Yes, sir," said the guard, and ried away. In a little while he turned. He seemed rather awake bent over me and said apologetic. "Do you know, sir, if I were would not prosecute that gent. just given me his card. Here it is Mr. Andrew Carnegie." Big Sugar Output Never before has the outlook for the sugar-beet crop in California been as auspicious as now. Reports from every beet-growing community in the State tell of wonderful development this season. Should weather conditions remain favorable for the next two months, all previous records for beet-sugar production probably will be surpassed. The Pacific Beet Sugar Company, which is building an immense plant at Corcoran, reports its factory almost completed and machinery nearly installed. The harvest in June will find everything ready for the making of sugar. The harvest in the fields at Corcoran and Visalia will be about 80,-000 tons of beets from 8500 acres. This will produce 200,000 bags, or 20,000,000 pounds of sugar, worth about $1,000,000. The Oxnard plant, for the first time in its history, will be forced to run to full capacity when the harvest of more than 15,000 acres in that vicinity is completed. The output of the pure sugar from the 150,000 tons of beets will be nearly 40,000,000 pounds. At Alamitos, the output of sugar will be the same as at Corcoran. Including the latter territory in Southern California, the crop of beets made into the sugar will bring the producers nearly $4,000,000, the greatest amount ever made in the same industry in this section. Farther North, the beets have not fully developed, and an exact estimate of the crop cannot yet be made. It also will be large. On Carnegie Andrew Carnegie, at a dinner recently given in his honor in New York, told an amusing story at his own expense. "I was traveling on an English railway by the referee board become effective after 1908 as may be ordered. This official declaration means millions to the fruit drying industry of California and other States as well. Caution should be had, however, says the State board of trade, not to overput sulphur in terms of general practice and thereby transgress the general provisions of the pure food law. Up to the present time the sulphurry has received but little attention in the various South American states. Most of these countries large areas of forested land, but to the fact that they are so situated and that they are mainly of broadleaf species which too hard for ordinary building and construction lumber and hence not great demand, they have not been extensively lumbered. An illustration of this might be cited fact that the small country of furnishes more saw material than the whole of South America. Wasteful exploitation of the soil of the Argentine Republic is ing, however, and their wanty struction is beginning to attract there. So far the destructive valuable fruit trees has received attention than that of forests. The following is a quotation from an article which recently appeared in Nacion," and was translated "Buenos Aires Herald:" "It is not only in the Provinces Buenos Aires that the ancient plantations are being destroyed evil has spread to the remotest edges corners of the Republic. In recent journey to and through these inches of the interior, I have found every hand the effects of the severe reckless felling of timber and the durable carelessness of the authors who allow it. The destruction of our enous trees have been ruthlessly ficed; not only those of spong growth but also those planted ancestors on behalf of their posses." To make a beginning of my forty-four recital, I will first mention in La Rioja this senseless war nature has laid low large plant magnificent and highly productive orange trees, the fruit of which is superior to the importation Paraguay here consumed. Haitian trees been proverly cultivated Province would now possess a wealth which would have spilled sulphur by the referee board become effective after 1908 as may be ordered. On Carnegie Andrew Carnegie, at a dinner recently given in his honor in New York, told an amusing story at his own expense. "I was traveling on an English railway Londonward last year," he said, and had chosen a seat in a non-smoking Girlhood and Scott's Emulsion are linked together. The girl who takes Scott's Emulsion has plenty of rich, red blood; she is plump, active and energetic. The reason is that at a period when a girl's digestion is weak, Scott's Emulsion provides her with powerful nourishment in easily digested form. It is a food that builds and keeps up a girl's strength. ALL DRUGGISTS: 50c. AND $1.00. B. "In Mendoza the olive trees, cultivated as far back as two hundred years ago by the Jesuits, have completely disappeared. There, however, be it said with satisfaction, there are men of the stamp of Civit, Seru, and others like them, who are busied with plantations that promise to make good the loss. In San Juan the feeling has been stupidly prodigal, with the result that not even half of the plantations remain which thirty years ago tempered its torrid climate and beautified its valleys. "In Santiago del Estero, Salta, Cata-marca, and Jujuy, there are signs of the same barbaric destruction which, unless it is arrested, will soon leave those provinces as bare as a maize field that has been ravaged by the locusts. "As for Tucuman, the Tucuman of poetic legends mentioned by Avella-neda, it is today almost unrecognizable. It would no longer be true to repeat his words where he says: 'The orange and lemon tree which produce in rich abundance flowers and fruit, perfuming the ambient air, feeding the inhabitants and affording them a house and a home, are most beloved by them as the emblem of the felicitous union of the useful and beautiful.' No; even the famous and magnificent orange trees of the city plaza have disappeared to make way for more pretentious plants that, unfit for the climate and inappropriate for the spot, cut the feeble and sorry figure of weasoned and sapless consumptives." As an illusion this might be cited the small country of France where saw material than does South America. Exploitation of the forests of Argentine Republic is increase, and their wanton depreciation to attract attention. So far the destruction of trees has received more than that of forest trees. Drying is a quotation from an recently appeared in "La Herald" was translated by the Times Herald:" Only in the Province of Mendoza that the ancient tree are being destroyed; the head to the remotest inhabitant of the Republic. No; even the famous and magnificent orange trees of the city plaza have disappeared to make way for more pretentious plants that, unfit for the climate and inappropriate for the spot, cut the feeble and sorry figure of weasoned and sapless consumptives." From the destruction of the fruit orchards to that of the forests is but a step, and the people are already waking up to the fact that they must take measures to protect their enormous and valuable forest resources. The work of the United States Government along this line is attracting attention there and is being watched with considerable interest. One writer points out the laws of the United States, Canada and British India, and commenting on the fact that the usefulness of forests is now admitted, goes on to state that the lack of suitable forestry laws to prevent the wasteful exploitation of the forests will, if continued, witness the total destruction of the immense forests of valuable woods of the Republic. So far, the damage done is comparatively slight. The enormous lumber resources of the country are with a few exceptions as yet practically untouched, and the Argentine has a splendid opportunity to show its wisdom and fore-sightedness in this matter by taking action before it is too late. The progress of the forestry movement there will certainly be watched with great interest in this country. Drying preparations simply develop dry catarrh; they dry up the secretions, which adhere to the membrane and decompose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. Avoid all drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm will master catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. All druggists sell the 50 cent size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren Street, New York. The Balm is used without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads itself over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation. Ely's Cream Balm contains no cocaine, mercury nor other harmful drugs. Colonists Arriving Colonists Arriving Colonists from the East who are seeking homes in sunny Southern California continue to stream into Los Angeles over the Salt Lake, Santa Fe and Southern Pacific roads. The arrivals come to Southern California to make their homes in this favored country. The great majority of the colonists came through the Northern and Ogden gateways. They had started from Chicago and Missouri river points on the first day of low rates but had stopped over at Salt Lake or other places en route. This class of new arrivals is considered as a representative lot of the busiest and best farmers in the Middle West. Many of them are plentifully supplied with means, and it is their intention to purchase land in Imperial Valley or other garden spots of Southern California and to begin life at once in their new and improved surroundings. Others came with the idea of homesteading land or taking up timber claims in the mountains, while still others are determined to engage in mining. Later a short lull in arrivals is predicted, but during April, and especially the last few weeks, many thousands of colonists are expected.
