WICKSON SCORES DR. WILFY Says Government Chemist Is at Fault In His Ideas of the Drying and Bleaching of Fruit In a letter sent to President Wheeler Professor E. J. Wickson, director of the United States experimental station at the Berkeley university, and head of the college of agriculture, denies the statesments of Dr. W. H. Wiley, chief of the bureau of chemistry of the federal department of agriculture, that salt is better than sulphur in the bleaching and drying of fruits. Prof. Wickson backs up the arguments of the growers of the state in claiming that the use of sulphur for bleaching and drying fruits not only is the best method for use, but is absolutely healthful as used in California. Prof. Wickson is one of the best known authorities on all branches of agriculture in the state and a close student of all branches of fruit culture. He has made the claim in his letter to the head of the university that the salt solution for dried fruits was tried 15 years ago and found unsatisfactory. He further stated that the samples of dried apples cured by a salt solution produce a light brown instead of the pallid white, and the producers of the state cannot afford to try to reform the tastes of their purchasers. Although for apples and possibly pears cut in rings or small sections the salt process might be used from a pro- Banquet to Rural Mail Postmaster Duckworth had to banquet the carriers, and the office force on Christ but on account of being care Hawaiian Islands, on account illness of his son Guy, was to postpone the occasion until. He further stated that the samples of dried apples cured by a salt solution produce a light brown instead of the pallid white, and the producers of the state cannot afford to try to reform the tastes of their purchasers. Although for apples and possibly pears cut in rings or small sections the salt process might be used from a producing view, the university expert makes the point that it is impractical for pears and apples cut in halves. The entrance of Prof. Wickson into this contest has revived the hopes of the producers in the fight against the government agricultural authorities began during the visit of Secretary of Agriculture Wilson to the coast last year. Prof. Wickson's argument, backed by the other experts of the university and state, may be the battering ram to overcome the fortress behind which the government authorities have gathered to wage their war on the sulphur process used by producers. The attention of new voters is called to the fact that they must register in order to vote at the April election. E. B. Merritt and Joseph Helmsen have been appointed clerks to register all voters, and those who have not already registered are ordered to do so. Those already on the great register need not re-register for the spring election, but must do so for the general election in November. New voters had best see to it that they are registered in time for the spring election. Do it now. Take advantage of values that Young-bluth and Kroeger are offering. See their ad.
