CULTURE OF THE WALNUT
Mr. Neff Offers Some Observations
Upon the Industry—Grafts and Buds — Fertilization — Blight
When walnuts are spoken of in California, it is always understood that soft-shell walnuts are meant, and softshell walnuts are becoming known in the markets of the United States as "California walnuts." This being a mark of excellence everywhere.
CALIFORNIA WALNUTS
They were formerly known as English walnuts, probably because of having been marketed by English merchants when all walnuts were imported, but likely originated in Persia or Asia Minor, though it has been found native over a wide area, including the mountains of Greece, of Armenia, of Afghanistan and the northwest Himalayas, and is also found in Japan. Walnuts from Persia were brought to Rome by merchants and from there distributed over Europe.
There are no records to show when the first walnuts were planted in California, but the best authorities say that it was about 1769 and that the planting was done by the Mission fathers. Very few trees were planted for nearly one hundred years after the first planting. About the year 1843 a few trees were planted at San Diego by J. J. Warner, and F. E. Kellogg, Sr. planted a small orchard at Calistoga, in the upper part of Napa valley, in 1848. Mr. J. R. Congdon planted an orchard of hardshells in 1869. H. K. Snow and P. T. Adams planted the first walnut grove in the vicinity of pagate by grafting or budding. Such al such trees have been found and grafting on old trees will be done spring on a scale large enough to onstrate its practicability.
FERTILIZATION AN ADVANTAGE
It has been determined that fertilization will produce larger even where blight is serious, and by this means production can creased until the orchard may be usually changed to the more resilient varieties, by top grafting or means.
Walnut groves have not had that has been given to oranges, nor in selection of varieties nor in cultivation or fertilization of the soil, and it issible that the blight may cause growth to use better methods of culturing well as selection of varieties, and it end be the means of largely increase the production and value of the walnuts.
WE CAN AFFORD ONLY THE BEST
The largest annual production walnuts was 8000 tons, but this fallen off considerably until now; production is from 6500 tons to tons per year. The average producer per acre is about 800 pounds, but that are well cultivated and fertile produce from 1500 to 2000 pounds acre. Trees that produce 200 per year are not uncommon, so it readily be seen that if only the trees are used in propagating, either budding or grafting, the yield walnut groves can be greatly increased without much additional expense; the profits will be corresponding greater.—J. planting was done by the Mission fathers. H. K. Snow and P. T. Adams planted the first walnut grove in the vicinity of Tustin and Santa Ana in 1879. These were hardshells and the planting was an orchard of eight acres, which was characterized as a rash adventure by the neighbors, but the soundness of their judgment is shown by the fact that the orchard is one of the best producers in the valley after more than one-third of a century is passed. A year later Snow and Adams heard of softshell walnuts grown by Joseph Sexton, of Santa Barbara, and got some nuts to plant in nursery. They planted their first softshell orchard in 1883.
THE SOFT SHELL
The softshell walnut originated in Santa Barbara county and first came into notice in 1880. It is supposed to have been the result of cross pollination between hardshell and papershell walnuts. Softshell walnuts soon became popular and have been planted exclusively for the past twenty years under the name of Santa Barbara Softshells.
MOSTLY IN THE SOUTH
There are but few walnut groves of commercial importance north of Santa Barbara county, though there are some small plantings through the Sacramento valley and several acres planted in the Santa Clara valley and in Sonoma county.
The walnut trees of the northern part of the State are mostly of French varieties, and largely Franquette, as it has proven the most productive in that district, though not equally successful in the southern counties.
GRAFTS AND BUDS
Large plantings of grafted and budded walnuts have been made within the last ten years in the southern counties, and almost the entire planting of the northern counties are grafted trees. The variety mostly propagated in the south is known as the Placentia Perfection, and originated in the Placentia district of Orange County.
Dry Farming Congress
We are in receipt of the official for the second session of the T-Missouri Dry Farming Congress, which meets in Salt Lake City, January 22-26, 1908.
OBJECTS
First—The consideration of the methods of rendering the lands of semi-arid West productive where irrigation is impracticable.
Second—The determination of best agricultural methods where and live stock farming is practicable.
Third—To encourage the establishment of experimental farms to determine the limitations of scientific culture and seed selection; these efforts to be operated under the direction State and Federal experiment stations or private enterprise.
Fourth—To assist the prosper settler in every practical way to determine what land under scientific culture methods is susceptible to production:
Fifth—To encourage the use of e conservative practical method for developing the semi-arid region America.
Funds for Teaching Forestry
A plan to be urged upon Congress the present session is commendable its promise of beneficial effect. Its secure instruction in forestry in State Agricultural Colleges throughout the Union, and experiments in estry to be made by the State Eximent Stations. The proposal is to to the Morrill and Hatch funds which the colleges and stations are dowed, $2,500 for each of these poses—so much for forestry instructors to students, and the same amount research, making a total of $5,000.

GRAFTS AND BUDS
Large plantings of grafted and budded walnuts have been made within the last ten years in the southern counties, and almost the entire planting of the northern counties are grafted trees. The variety mostly propagated in the south is known as the Placentia Perfection, and originated in the Placentia district of Orange county about eighteen years ago. This is a vigorous, upright growing tree which produces large, smooth nuts that hull freely and are well filled with white meat. The stocks used for grafting and budding have been largely seedling softshell in the south, while that used in the north has been mostly the native black walnut, and very frequently these are not grafted until ten to fifteen years old.
AND THE BLIGHT CAME
A blight of both nuts and the green twigs began to attract attention about eight years ago; the Department of Agriculture at once instituted investigations which were supplemented, and are now being carried on by the University of California, but which have not as yet resulted in any preventative of the disease that is of any commercial value.
It has been found that there are trees which are resistant to the blight and which produce large crops under the same conditions that cause other trees adjoining them to lose the greater part of their crop.
Since this has become known, a series of investigations have been made with a view of getting a tree that will be resistant to a great degree, and at the same time produce large crops of desirable walnuts, from which to pro-

The proposal is to to the Morrill and Hatch funds which the colleges and stations are dowed, $2,500 for each of these poses—so much for forestry instructed to students, and the same amount research, making a total of $5,000.
The Davis bill, aiming at this end a previous Congress, has been re-died, and it is to be hoped that it will receive earnest support from the court.
The income derived from the National Forests has been used for several years to put the United States Forest Service on a good footing. At its session Congress directed that this come should no longer be used for purpose, but covered into the Treasury. What could be more appropriate to use a portion of it for adding to people's knowledge of methods of serving and economizing the wood resources which they possess out the National Forests? Four-fifth the woods of the country are in prick hands; and a large share of these are the shape of farm woodlots. The farmers, at their colleges, should be taught to improve their timber crop as well as other crops.

Mrs. Eva Johnson's Death was Caused by Injection of Morphine—Arthur Barca Accused
That Arthur Barca administered morphine in some form to Mrs. Eva Johnson, thereby causing her death, was the conclusion arrived at by the coroner's jury at the inquest at San Bernardino over the remains, and the testimony produced added to the mystery surrounding the affair by injecting into the case a strange personality for whom the officers are now seeking.
Miss Margaret Roble proved the strongest witness against the accused. Miss Rose Wade, who is supposed to know more than she will admit, also gave incriminating testimony, but it was evident while she was testifying that she was not divulging all she knows of the woman's death, while an-

Miss Margaret Roble proved the strongest witness against the accused. Miss Rose Wade, who is supposed to know more than she will admit, also gave incriminating testimony, but it was evident while she was testifying that she was not divulging all she knows of the woman's death, while another like her was Miss Ida Tremble.
Miss Wade and Miss Tremble admitted being with the deceased and Barca in a room in the Double Decker on the night Mrs. Johnson died, and admitted that a mysterious man had called to see Mrs. Johnson at about 10 o'clock and came again at 2 o'clock in the morning, entering the woman's room with her, and that half an hour later they were attracted by the woman's groans to find the door locked from the inside.
Miss Roble made the straightforward declaration that the dying woman had confessed to her that Barca had injected morphine into her. He had suggested injecting them all. Mrs. Johnson had sent Chanco Moreno to purchase 50 cents worth of morphine, and had asked Miss Roble if she would be injured if she allowed Barca to inject some of the poison. This was given as proof that deceased had never used the drug before.
All the evening Mrs. Johnson had been anxious to meet a man who had promised to call on her. Before Moreno went for the poison he stopped to talk with the deceased, who had gone into the front yard in her anxiety to meet her prospective caller. That was at 10 o'clock, and the visitor was then talking with the woman, but he did not enter the house at the time.
Shortly before midnight she ed went to her room. She n shortly, and at 2 o'clock her nous masculine friend called agn Mrs. Johnson started for her she complained to Miss Roble she didn't feel just right.
