COLORED GIRL A SUICIDE Enticed From Her Home Here, Enters Sporting House at San Bernardino—Bore Good Reputation—Was it Murder? Mrs. Eva Johnson, a handsome colored woman of 22, wife of Harry Johnson of this city, committed suicide by drinking poison in a house at San Bernardino on Monday. News of the suicide was received here by Marshal Steadman from San Bernardino officers on Monday evening. He notified Johnson, who went to San Bernardino on Tuesday. Johnson says he gave his wife $200 a month or more ago to pay her expenses on a trip to her home in Tennessee. He also provided her with clothing, and she was well attired. The woman is said to have been enticed to San Bernardino by a negro named Rice, who took her money and left her penniless. After spending a day and a night weeping over her unhappy fate she took poison. An inquest was held at San Bernardino on Tuesday. The remains were interred there yesterday. Mrs. Johnson during her short residence here was a well behaved and intelligent woman. She was industrious, and did washing for families, going about from one house to another. She had attended school, used good language and was always attired neatly. Those who knew her have nothing but words of praise for her character and of regret at her downfall. Johnson left for San Bernardino on Tuesday morning. He went beeled and was accompanied by several colored friends. Should he meet Rice there will likely be a colored funeral... Johnson left for San Bernardino on Tuesday morning. He went beeled and was accompanied by several colored friends. Should he meet Rice there will likely be a colored funeral at San Bernardino. The San Bernardino Sun of Tuesday contains the following account of the suicide: Despondent over the falseness of a lover, and grieving because her own home was closed to her on account of her shortcomings, Mrs. Eva Johnson, a pretty mullato girl of Anaheim, committed suicide in the "Double-Decker," a notorious negro sporting house on lower D street yesterday, taking morphine. Involved in the affair is a negro named Will Rice of Los Angeles who is alleged to be a procuror. He, it is claimed, lured the young woman from her home in Anaheim, and after a few days in Los Angeles, brought her to this city and placed her in the house where death overwhelmed her. A bunch of letters was found among the girl's effects by the officers, the contents of which are said to implicate Rice. These will probably be produced at the inquest. Last evening a negro, claiming to come from Rice, called at the Double-Decker and made a demand for the letters. Several of these communications which the girl received from Rice are evidently in reply to pathetic appeals to be taken from the life she is leading. They seem to be cruel responses to the girl's heart cries for a love that had been hers only long enough to wreck her life, and was withdrawn to leave her a fallen woman. Mrs. Johnson came to this city with Rice about two weeks ago, and at once became an inmate of the sporting house referred to. Then Rice went back to Los Angeles, and since then the woman has been writing to him, and he has refused to grant her appeals to be taken from her life in the underworld of this city, unless she agreed to enter a similar section in Los Angeles. to wreck her life, and was withdrawn to leave her a fallen woman. Then Rice went back to Los Angeles, and since then the woman has been writing to him, and he has refused to grant her appeals to be taken from her life in the underworld of this city, unless she agreed to enter a similar section in Los Angeles. Sunday, shortly before the midnight hour, the young woman locked herself in her room. An hour later her heavy breathing attracted the attention of other inmates, who investigated, to find the unfortunate in a deep sleep. They tried repeatedly to arouse her, and failing, hurriedly sent for Dr. C. D. Dickey, who remained with her all night and until late next day, but all his efforts to restore her to consciousness were in vain. MURDER SUSPECTED Word reached this city on Tuesday evening that the woman was probably murdered. The discovery was made through the investigations of Deputy Sheriff Charles Ward, who ordered the arrest of a Mexican named Martinez Baca, at Riverside. The investigation brought to light that the unfortunate young woman, together with Rose Wade, who conducts the house, and several other women were with Mrs. Johnson in her room, when Baca suggested they let him give them each "a shot of morphine." All consented, and after treating Rose Wade he injected the poison directly over the Johnson girl's heart. L. Porter, Supt. Sulphuring Dried Fruits The state board of trade has issued the following circular letter referring to the necessity for concerted action for the protection of our dried-fruit interests: To the chambers of commerce, boards of trade, agricultural societies and other bodies in California. The California state board of trade regards with anxious concern the as yet unsettled and unsatisfactory status of the dried fruit sulphuring question. As at present advised from the several sources to which we have to look for information, the situation is pregnant with danger to this important industry in which a large number of fruit growers in various sections of the state have embarked their capital. Hesitancy and delay will surely bring disaster widespread and irremediable. Full discussion of the various phases of the question should be had at once by those primarily interested and prompt action agreed upon and taken before it is too late to bear results for the protection of growers during the coming season. With this end in view, the California State Board of Trade suggests to and asks, the organized bodies through out the state to at once call meetings, by personal notice and through the press, of those interested in the fruit growing industry, and have appointed their best men as delegates to a convention which will be called for 11 a.m. January 16th, to meet at the rooms of the California State Board of Trade, Ferry building, San Francisco, for the purpose of taking such effective and protective steps in the matter, as, after full survey and discussion of the situation, may seem most advisable. It is suggested that three delegates be appointed from each fruit growing center or county, and that their names be sent to this office promptly. California State Board of Trade. Arthur R.
