Blessing the Pieta At St. Boniface church on Sunday evening a large congregation witnessed the ceremony of the blessing the Pieta by the Rev. Father Dubbel. The Pieta is a carving of wood, all in one piece except the cross, and represents the virgin mother holding in her lap the body of the saviour after He had been taken from the cross on Calvary. The figures are life-sized, and are a beautiful conception of the sculptor's art. The carving was made in Austria, and required the skill of one man continually during seven months to complete it. It will have a permanent place in the church. The effect is striking and realistic. The face of the sorrowing mother shows plainly the woe which fills her breast, while the body of the Son shows the wounds, from which flows his precious blood. At the rear of the rises the cross, from whence it has been just lowered. Rev. Dubbel's sermon dealt with events upon Mount Calvary where Pieta typesies: the crucifixion Saviour. He pictured the which possessed the virgin m she claimed the body of her Strong men had left the scene their breasts in their anguish noble character of the so mother was dwelt upon, and he temperament held out as a worshippers in the church. The Pieta was borne up theaisle by four men and placed at the altar. At conclusion of the address it was carried to its front of the church, and was closely regarded by the lay congregation which filed past. The city band contemplates giving open-air concerts on Sunday afternoon, or each alternate Sunday, if encouragement is extended by the business community. The band is being maintained by its sixteen members, and the expense for new music and other essentials is constantly increasing. It is an organization which is a credit to the city, and the efforts of its members should meet with liberal treatment. A subscription list may be circulated for contributions, and should meet with a ready response. A committee from the grand jury this week experted the books of City Clerk Merritt and other city officials. They reported everything in apple-pie order.
