THE STATE FARM AT DAVIS
Higher Agricultural Education Its Mission—Higher Grade of Scientific Knowledge on Cultivating the Soil
Agriculture is the foundation of all material progress. The philosophers and seers of antiquity; the wise men of every age have recognized this truth and enshrined it in immortal pages. Our own Washington, who ranks high in the category of modern philosophers of a practical turn, on more than one occasion in his writings and public addresses took occasion to emphasize the nobility of the husbandman's calling and its primal importance to the happiness and prosperity of nations. "The farmer feeds us all" is a trite and homely phrase, but it embodies a vital fact of supreme significance to the human race. The dignity and value of the labor of the class the products of whose industry sustain mankind physically, and furnish the groundwork of almost every other form of industrial activity, is universally conceded. The wealth of the world's agriculture vastly exceeds the combined appraisement of all its mines and manufactures. The annual products of the country represent an infinitely larger nature of material riches than the gregate of all other industries at the same period. The place where agriculture holds in the economy human affairs is, therefore, paramount dignity and import. It bears an intimate and vital relation to the advancement of kind, socially, morally and politically. It is the source and found head of all development in the sciences as well as in the physical and material interests of society. Elitate agriculture and the fabric we call civilization would crush into dust and men would relapse to a state of savagery. It is fundamental to the noblest attainment the race in every line of intellect and material endeavor. All the obvious to thinking minds, and the mass of people living in it and preoccupied with the artificies of life in great centers of population fail to fully appreciate force of the profound reality. But both the old civilization and new, agriculture has held its prime among arts. Its development kept pace with the world's material advancement in every direction. Never in its practical aspects husbandry reached the high de

Never has the soil been forced to yield so much of wealth and by methods so enlightened and effective.
The report of the Secretary of Agriculture for 1906 directs attention to the gigantic strides which the farming industry in the United States has made within the past decade. For the year covered by the secretary's report, the farm value of the farm products was estimated at $6,794,000,000, a total of almost inconceivable magnitude. The increase over the previous year reached the stupendous sum of $485,000,-000 and above the value of 1904,$877,000,000. The advance upon the census of 1899 reached the enormous total of $2,077,000,000. These figures, in the opinion of the Great West, are staggering in their immensity and serve to bring home to the imagination the wonderful potency of American agricultural progress. In it rests the secret of the nation's unprecedented material prosperity during the period embraced. Farm products continue to be so far beyond the national requirements that the farm still overshadows the mill, the factory and the workshop in providing exports. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 1906, the farm products exported totalled $976,000,000, the largest amount ever reached by agrivirts for this or any other country. Farm real estate, as shown in the same report, has increased value $6,131,000,000 since the year 1899, or enough to recoup census value to $22,745,000; to this is added the value ofotic animals, other live stock implements and machinery, thers' capital represented by items reaches the prodigious $28,000,000,000.
