The Great Oil Fields of Utah
A company has lately been formed to develop this Oil Field. This company owns 60 acres in Washington county, Utah, which has already proven to be one of the largest, if not the largest, deposits of oil in the United States and has first-class machinery on the road which will be up and in operation within 3 days. Capitalists of Goldfield, Nev., and Fresno, Cal., are the promoters and developers of this enterprise. These capitalists include such well known men as E. A. Montgomery and J. C. McCormack, and are among the best known mining men in the country, having contributed largely to the success of Goldfield and other Nevada mining centers. The company is capitalized at 1,000,000 shares, at par value of $1 per share. This stock inside of 6 months will be worth from $1 to $5 per share. The agent is now offering the first 100,000 shares at

Forest Planting in the Ohio Valley
Forest planting in the Ohio Valley offers many opportunities for profit. In eastern and Southern Ohio and southern Indiana much of the land is hilly and unfit for agricultural crops, and the native forest has been largely cut out, leaving a stand of worthless trees and brush. Land has been cleared on steep slopes, and has now become so badly washed and gullied by the rains that it no longer serves for good pasture, and is being overrun with sassafras and briers. It is on this class of land that forestry will prove most profitable. The native trees already on the ground should be pruned and thinned; and waste corners which bear no forest growth should be planted to
The "Santa Ana" Wind.
The duststorms of the San Gabriel valley are described by Prof. George E. Hale in the following quotation from his report in the Annual Volume for 1906, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington:
I have previously alluded to the duststorms which sometimes enter the San Gabriel valley through the Cajon Pass from the Mohave desert, and those much rarer storms in which the dust is carried by the wind completely over the Sierra Madre mountains. In the more common form of duststorm (the so-called "Santa Ana") the dust enters the valley in a fairly well defined mass and proceeds westward along the canon of the Santa Ana river. In approaching the coast it spreads over a large area and diffuses itself with tolerable uniformity through the atmosphere. I have seen from Mount Wilson a duststorm in the region of Riverside which in twenty-four hours had spread itself over Los Angeles and Pasadena. When it reached this part of the valley there was almost no wind, and the dust seemed to diffuse itself through the air. Such storms sometimes completely hide the Sierra Madre mountains from observers at Pasadena. Fortunately they are almost always confined to the lower atmosphere, and do not appreciably affect the transparency of the sky above Mount Wilson, where daily observations show that the transparency of the day and night sky is very satisfactory.
White Fly In Oregon
White Fly In Oroville.
State Horticultural Commissioner Elwood Cooper appeared before the Board of Supervisors at Oroville some days ago and made a statement to them relative to the existence of the white fly there. The most important points relative to the situation adduced were as follows:
The white fly has been found infesting about thirteen blocks of the city, but has not as yet been discovered elsewhere, indications pointing to the fact that it has not been here much over a year.
The parent fly is now dead, and the pest is now in the egg state. It will soon pass into the larval state, and it will be March before the winged fly will again appear. Before that time active steps must be taken to eradicate the pest, and the methods to be employed will be fumigation and defoliation.
A large number of the trees at Oroville are so large and so near to the houses that it will be impracticable to fumigate these trees, and such trees must be defoliated.
An edict will be issued during this month to be served on property owners, in which the necessary steps will be given in detail.
In order to save the trees the period of defoliating has been fixed from February 1 to 20, as defoliation previous to this time will endanger the life of the trees—Fruit Grower.
Growing Fuel in South Dakota
On the original farm of Mr. O. J. Solem, some ten miles from Volin, in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, says Professor Shaw, in the American Agriculturist, a grove of cottonwood trees had been planted along a ravine some twenty-five years ago. They were not so close as to crowd each other. Some were beginning to show signs of money-saving.

On the original farm of Mr. O. J. Solem, some ten miles from Vollin, in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, says Professor Shaw, in the American Agriculturist, a grove of cottonwood trees had been planted along a ravine some twenty-five years ago. They were not so close as to crowd each other. Some were beginning to show signs of decreasing vigor. What most attracted my attention was their size. Many of them when cut down would certainly furnish a cord of wood per tree. That is good growth for a quarter of a century. It is certainly worth while for some farmers in localities where fuel is scarce, and yet where it grows so readily, to consider the advisability of growing more or less of it for fuel.
