George Hatfield was in town this week in company of his father, J. S. Hatfield, having come down from Mare Island to call upon his grandfather, who is past his ninety-second birthday. George has been three years in the United States navy, having served on the Oregon in the Aslatic station. He come over on the Clincinnati, which has gone out of commission. On his return to Mare Island he will go aboard the Independence. He says the Japs want no trouble with Uncle Sam, their navy being altogether inferior to our own. He brings news of an attempted blowing up of the drydock Dewey, which was towed from New York through the Suez canal to the islands. As the Japs were about to touch off the fuse they were arrested, and are now in the pen at Manilla. Our young friend is well pleased with service aboard ship, and there need be no fear of his failure to give a good account of himself when the crucial test arrives. George was a fighter on land, and there is no reason to doubt he will prove to be a fighter on the water. Good luck to the young man-of-war's man.

All went merry at the picnic at Columbia Garden on Sunday until dark, when a few unruly spirits looked for trouble received what was coming to them. A fight resulted which was participated in by a dozen or more. Officers Steadman and Litten interfered to preserve order. The latter was knocked down. He used his billy and knocked his assailant down three times. Both officers used their clubs freely and order was finally restored.
