GERMANS WILL CELEBRATE
People of Fatherland Settled
In America in Days of Capt.
Smith and William Penn.
Next Sunday, October 6th, Germans of Southern California gather in Los Angeles for the celebration of "German Day." From the program of exercises for the day we take the following brief account of the meaning of the celebration:
Not very long after the discovery of America, in the year 1528, the Welshers, a great commercial house of Augsburg, Bavaria, received a grant of land in South America and founded the colony of Welserland, a part of the Venezuela of today. Soon their rivals, the Fuggers, of Augsburg, sent also an expedition to the new world and established on the Pacific Coast of South America a colony, extending from the Straits of Magellan to Peru. But one (Phillip von Hutten, nephew of Luther's companion, Ulrich von Hutten, and George Hohenmuth of Speyer, being the most notable ones among its colonists) perished during the religious conflicts which arose; the others failed, having been too remote to attract colonists.
Another colonizing experiment, this time in North America, was also unsuccessful. Under the patronage of Coligny, Alsatian and Hessian Protestants settled at Port Royal, South Carolina, in 1562. Their colony was soon Fire Wardeen

Another colonizing experiment, this time in North America, was also unsuccessful. Under the patronage of Coligny, Alsatian and Hessian Protestants settled at Port Royal, South Carolina, in 1562. Their colony was soon attacked and destroyed by hostile natives.
Captain John Smith, whose memory was recently honored at the Jamestown exposition, brought with him German immigrants, whose superiority as workmen above the others he had recognized while visiting Germany. Among the Dutch colonists of New Netherlands were also Germans, and in May, 1626, came to Manhattan Island another party of German settlers from Wesel on the Rhine. Through Usselinx, a Swede, Gustavus Adolphus became interested in colonization in America and even his death in the battle of Luetzen could not stop the progress of this enterprise. The foundation of a Swedish colony on the Delaware followed and the close relations of Germany and Sweden during and after the "Thirty Years" War brought it about, that German settlers were attracted by the Swedish colony in America.
Up to the year 1672, however, there was no lasting German colony founded in North America. William Penn visited in the years 1671 and 1677 Germany and aroused its interest. Subsequently Jacob Felner of Crefeld visited America and on the 10th of March, 1683, Penn conveyed to him and others 5,000 acres of land each. These events and the foundation of a Colonization Company at Frankfort fired the enthusiasm, and among others, a young jurist, Francis Daniel Pastorius, decided to emigrate to the province of Penn. He sailed on the ship "America" before the Crefelders did and was among those who saluted on the 6th of October, 1683, the arrival of the Crefelders on the ship "Concord."
With the landing of the Crefelders, the first organized German settlers, in Pennsylvania, begins permanent German colonization in this country, and so the 6th of October becomes the natal day of German enterprise in North America.

With the landing of the Crefelders, the first organized German settlers, in Pennsylvania, begins permanent German colonization in this country, and so the 6th of October becomes the natal day of German enterprise in North America.
The foundation of the modest settlement of Germantown by Pastorius followed. Of those other streams of immigration up to 1825 is the most noteworthy that of the Palatines in the years 1708 and 1709, who came over from London to Pennsylvania and finally settled down in the fertile land of the headwaters of the Swatara.
The importance of these German colonists is not confined to agriculture only; they brought with them their trades, and cabinetmakers, clockmakers, workers in iron, potters, were almost exclusively Germans.
Adding to this the great achievements of the later German immigrants and remembering the fact that it was a logical sequence of the settlement of Germantown, that these thousands of Germans sought their fortune in America, filling the cities of the East and peopling the States of the Middle West, with their ideals, their traditional love of liberty, their longing for National Unity, their devotion to science, literature and art, it will be understood why we celebrate the day the Crefeld colonists set their foot upon American soil, why we celebrate the 6th of October as "German Day."

TIM CARROLL BRINGS SUIT
Fires Case in Equity Against Los Alamitos Sugar Factory for Affeged Infringement of Patented Beet Dump.
Tim Carroll has instituted suit
against the Los Alamitos sugar factory, asking damages in the sum of
$100,000 for alleged infringement of
his patented beet dumping apparatus.
Suit is brought in the United States district court in Los Angeles, and plaintiff alleges infringement of two patents connected with his beet-dumping device.
That necessity is the mother of invention was never more strikingly illustrated than by the discovery by Mr. Carroll twelve years ago of a more speedy method of dumping beet wagons, for the slow process in use before 1895 bade fair to menace the very existence of the industry. The method in vogue previous to that year was by block and tackle, the beets having first been loaded into wagons fitted out with netting. The process was slow, and wagons by the hundred were stalled for hours at the car dump.
Mr. Carroll had already procured a number of patents for various implements of this invention, and he saw through the situation at a glance. He made a dump at the side of the track, where farmers came to unload their beets into the cars. He used railway ties for his platform. the law authorizing the application of fire wardens makes no variation from which they can call the majority of these men either serving voluntarily or are by their employers. The reefer are paid, for services accrued in preventing or extinguishing fires, by the county in the fire occurs. This is the main the following counties of the supervisors have taken charge of the amendment to the Government Act, (Statute 1904) which permits them to initiate from the general fund county for the purpose: Fresno, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Clara, Sants San Diego, Tuolumne, Tucson supervisors of these counties appropriated sums ranging from $1500 for fire protection have either increased the size of the game warden and made of fire warden, with emergency wardens, who are paid for actually rendered, or have had entirely on the latter. System is good so long as the men distributed through-county who are paid to pre-extinguish fires, and speaks the progressive spirit of the state that have accepted this. The state forester invites us from county governments, towns and individuals for co-under these laws. Cars containing the forest fire warning notices for will be mailed free to any supon application. Mr. Carroll had already procured a number of patents for various implements of this invention, and he saw through the situation at a glance. He made a dump at the side of the track, where farmers came to unload their beets into the cars. He used railway ties for his platform. The side of his wagon was provided with hinges so that it could be dropped out, and the platform arranged so that a wagon might be given a slight tilt. Tim drove his first load of beets upon this dump, while others smiled at his effort. While the apparatus was imperfect, it demonstrated the correctness of his views. The following year a large dumping apparatus was erected at the warehouse. Horses were driven up a long incline, the wagon halted upon the tilting platform, and the beets dumped into cars below expeditiously. The horses were driven off an incline upon the other end. The old system of unloading was forgotten.
Tim had procured a patent for his device, and men came from near and far to see it. The next year dumps were erected at Buena Park, Benedict and Chino. Improvements were added, and today hundreds are in use by the American Sugar company, known as the sugar trust, the Hawaiian American Sugar company, the American Beet Sugar company, and many others. All pay royalty, and the patentee is becoming wealthy as a result of his inventive genius.
The dumping apparatus has taken gold medals at worlds' fairs, and is being introduced in many parts of the country. There are a number in operation in San Francisco, although when Tim visited the city immediately after the fire he found the place so steeped in graft that he was satisfied to escape from the city with his health.
The Los Alamitos Sugar company has used the tilting device for dumping beets since 1896. The case will be stubbornly fought, the sugar company maintaining there is no infringement. while the patentee alleges such infringement.

Fewer Sheep or None At All.
The Butte City, Mont. Miner quotes a stock man who says there are one million fewer sheep in that State today than there were twelve months ago, this difference having been brought about by the forest reserve policy of the present National Administration.
But if the range pastures are all eaten up, how is it possible to keep as many sheep as before? The Administration has not eaten up the grass; it is only protecting, for future use, such grass as is left, in order that the sheep population will not have to be reduced still more.
Gov. J. C. Cutler of Utah at the recent luncheon entertaining the Goddard newspaper correspondents excursion, spoke wisely on this point: "It may sometimes appear that in seeking the greatest good of the greatest number, an injustice is done to some who are interested. This would appear in the case of setting aside certain forest reserves, to the detriment of lumber, stock, and sheep interests. Also in the withdrawal of certain mineral lands from entry under the present system, until the real value of these lands may be at least approximately determined. But it is easily seen that the disadvantage is only temporary. Because the first of these

And as for the second issue, the government and the state should be entitled to a fair price for lands they have to dispose of."
New Varieties of Wheat and Barley, London, Sept. 21.—By scientific cultivation on an experimental farm near Cambridge, a group of university scientists assert that they have produced varieties of wheat and barley far larger than any hitherto known. From all varieties of wheat through the world selections were made of those having most desirable characteristics. These were crossed with Brittlewheats, with the idea of combining these qualities in one variety. A few many trials a wheat was produced which has given most satisfactory results in milling and baking. Similar improvements have been obtained with them.
Another interesting experiment is being tried upon sheep, the object being to improve the wool and the carcass so as to give a greater monetary value to the animal. The investigators so far made show that Mendel's laws apply to animals as well as to humans, and similar results may be expected from similar experiments.
