FULLERTON AND PLACENTIA, WAKE UP!
There is a brand-new electric railroad rumor in town this week,
and this time it looks like business. It comes from Huntington Beach, the seaside metropolis of the celery belt. It will be found referred to extensively upon this and other pages of this issue.
Up to the present time (and the project is only two weeks old) discussion has been confined to points along the line projected southwest of this city, as well as to ourselves. The time seems propitious for the towns to the north of us to be sitting up and taking notice. The clang of the electric car gong will be heard in that neighborhood before these sections are awake to a thorough realization of the meaning of all this railroad talk.
This new road will in all probability be continued on to Riverside, but whether it be built up River Canyon immediately or no, certain it is that Fullerton and Placentia should be taking a hand in the TAFT'S CONFESSION OF SECRETARY Taft's Columbus constitutes a remarkable cation to the literature of the can party. It deals with the roads, the trusts, and the tincidentally with the su "swollen fortunes." With the effect candor which is his characteristic, Mr. Taft makes complete profession of faith and cises with severity, but not travagance, the evils of management and the culpability of the men whose cupidity and for gain have forced the government to increase it over the "highways of the He explains with extraordinary cidity the purpose and effect railway rate bill, points our defects in the Elkins' bill and the fallacy of the argument Elkins' measure was sufficient all evils without further isolation. Wake up, Fullerton! Wake up, Placentia! The sound of the trolley gong comes up reverberating from the celery fields!
San Bernardino is talking of voting $500,000 in bonds for paving the roads in that county. San Bernardino is 26 times the territorial area of Orange county, and its assessed valuation is, we believe, nearly twice that of this county. Twenty-six times this county’s size, twice as wealthy. Yet Mr. Nickey and his Santa Ana chamber of commerce have had a pipe dream that this county wants to issue bonds in $600,-000 for paved roads converging about the county seat. Will these bonds be voted? Not in a thousand years! Never!
Meanwhile it might just as well be remembered that an S. P. tout here and there caroling from the hedges about paved roads do not go to make up the sum total of our citizenry. Strange as it may seem, some people have been shouting for good roads merely in order to get a job on the commission.
Anaheim can put aside for the present its desires for a sewer system and paved streets. The cross country electric line joining the beach with Riverside and Redlands and the upper valley, is the subject of uppermost importance in municipal discussion just now. Shall the road run through Anaheim, or can Sauta Ana money cause it to be deflected
Secretary Taft’s keynote eloquent only in so far as pression of convictions, which have been arrived at only after found thought in the simple and with convincing earnest eloquent. There are no oratory, no flights of rhetorical declarations of his conviction perhaps, one exception, the tion in which he declares hisation for Theodore Roosevelt all that he has done for the lican party.
Secretary Taft expresses viction that the tariff should amined by congress and that effects resulting from the conditions since the Dingle enacted should be adjusted as practicable after the March, 1909. It is probably but the most radical “stand will agree with him. Roosevelt is of the same opinion will do all in his power to the party in its next national form to that programme.

The cross country electric line joining the beach with Riverside and Redlands and the upper valley, is the subject of uppermost importance in municipal discussion just now. Shall the road run through Anaheim, or can Santa Ana money cause it to be deflected to that city? The goddess Opportunity knocks at our outer door. Shall we open wide the portals? Certainly. Let the procession proceed.
Postmaster General Meyer is a brave man to attempt to extend the parcels post service. Perhaps he has not been in Washington long enough to realize the power of the express companies in congress.
Henry Watterson's dark horse proves to be Governor Johnson of Minnesota. It will be a long time before Governor Johnson can carry New York, and without New York the democrats simply cannot win.
Of 1700 editors, congressman and leading republican politicians recently interrogated on the subject of a successor to Mr. Roosevelt, 1433 declared themselves in favor of "a progressive successor in sympathy with the Roosevelt policies."
CONFESSION OF FAITH
Mary Taft’s Columbus speech is a remarkable contribution to the literature of the republic. It deals with the railway trusts, and the tariff, and only with the subject of fortunes.” With that perior which is his chief charm Mr. Taft makes a concession of faith and criticism severity, but not with exaggeration, the evils of railway agent and the culpability of whose cupidity and greed have forced the federal effort to increase its control “highways of the nation.” Ums with extraordinary lust for purpose and effect of the state bill, points out the decline Elkins’ bill and exposes why of the argument that the measure was sufficient to evil evils without further leg.
He sternly condemns those officials who have used their primary power to crush out competition and to practice on the people. He regressive inheritance taxation imposed by the states, as remedy for “swollen ford” the federal income tax resort to only in the event city for extraordinary revival.

THE ELECTRIC RAILWAY SITUATION
An enthusiastic interest attaches to the electric-railway proposition which comes to us from Huntington Beach. The matter is referred to extensively upon another page, and it becomes more and more interesting as the days go by.
Among our townspeople the chief source of discussion seems to center about that part of the matter which deals with grading the right of way between this city and Garden Grove. At first blush objection seems to arise, but when the importance of this road is understood, this object disappears, to a great extent, and is lost sight of in the larger question of the expansion and growth of this city. When, however, it becomes known that this grading part of the contract does not originate with the railway company the case takes on an altogether different aspect.
The reason for this grading side issue, as explained in the reference to this subject upon another page, is this: When the line was originally surveyed from Huntington Beach inland, the route proceeded to Garden Grove on a direct line to this city. Santa Ana, foreseeing the danger threatening its civic importance by a great cross-country electric line, extending from Riverside and the upper valley through Orange county to the sea, its nearest approach being three miles to the west of that town, made the railroad company an offer that if the route were DEFLECTED TO SANTA ANA, that city would GRADE THE ROADBED as well as secure right
Taft's keynote speech is only in so far as the extent of convictions, which can be arrived at only after prosecution in the simplest terms convincing earnestness is there are no bursts of two flights of rhetoric in his sons of his convictions with, one exception, the peroration which he declares his admirer Theodore Roosevelt and he has done for the republicry.
Taft expresses the concern that the tariff should be exaggerated and that any dealing from the changing of laws since the Dingley law was should be adjusted as soon as possible after the 4th of October 1909. It is probable that all most radical "stand patters" see with him. President Wilson is of the same opinion and will in his power to commit himself in its next national plat-that programme.

This deflection means, if consummated, that the road will not touch Garden Grove nor this city.
It is simply a question whether Anaheim can do as much as Santa Ana offers to do. Can we do it? We can!
Such men as Mr. Royer, by whose magnificent place the route will probably extend if it comes this way at all; Mr. Neff, Messrs. Botsford and Connell, who own the famous Katella orchard; Mr. Braun, Mr. Newberry, and other wealthy men along the route, are enthusiastic about the line. These men will assist in the work before us.
Anaheim should get a good neckhold upon this electric-railway matter. It means much to the city. We believe the time in the affairs of this city which the philosopher speaks of is here. It is a time for our enterprising and progressive citizens to act. It is a time for tight-wads and mossbacks to be relegated to the rear.
It will require $10,000 to rise to the majesty of the situation. Shall we rise to it, or shall we knuckle down, tight wads, mossbacks and all, to Santa Ana?
