A baseball writer in the "Sporting News" referring to Burnnett after the game spoke as follows concerning him: "Burnett became famous in a day. Any ball player can make a fluke catch once in a while, but when an outfielder shows us three sensational stunts in one game as Burnett of the Cardinals did yesterday, I guess he's good. Two catches in the crowd were the more spectacular, but I am inclined to believe that Burnett's most difficult feat was his diving catch when he robbed Gus Dorner of a hit. Not since the days of Dickie Johnson and Fogarty have I seen such outfielding as the big St. Louis center fielder exhibited." Burnett was signed first with Seattle in 1905. He failed to make good and was farmed out to Tacoma. His first year's record with Tacoma was nine home runs, 23 twobaggers and 32 stolen bases. Montreal drafted him last season but for some reason did not take him and he started off this season with Tacoma again. He was traded to the St. Louis Nationals for Jake Beckley. He was to play first base but he was a better outfielder so they shifted him to the outfield. Gade's Narrow Escape H. Gade, for years in the truck business here, but now of Skidoo, Inyo Co., met with a serious accident several days ago. "The Skidoo News" says of it: "H. Gade experienced about as close a call as ever befalls a man last Friday night, from a gasoline fire. The lights in his saloon were not working properly, evidently due to lack of pressure, and he went into the cellar to pump up the pressure tank from which the lights are fed. Having pumped the usual amount of air into the tank he struck a match to look at the pressure gage. Immediately the whole cellar was filled with flames. Calling for help Mr. Gade jumped onto the stairs and with assistance from above was quickly lifted out of the fire. A barrel of water being at hand the fire was quickly extinguished. One of Mr. Gade's arms was severely burned and is under medical treatment. His face is also considerably scorched. The fire was due to an unknown leak in the pressure tank which allowed the gas to escape." Mr. Gade is now well on the road to recovery. Joint Meeting Joint Meeting The directors of the two valley water companies held a meeting at the office of the Anaheim Union Water Company on Tuesday. Matters of interest affecting them up the river were discussed, and a plan of action arrived at. Among the improvements in contemplation is a submerged dam at Scully's Point. The legal division of water in Riverside county also came up for consideration, and it was decided to vigorously prosecute all such divisions. Fire Near Visalia Visalia, Cal. Aug. 3—The fire which has been raging in the foothills east of this city for the last two days and nights, and which was reported extinguished yesterday afternoon broke out again at 9 o'clock last night and is now cutting a swath four miles wide back into the mountains. Determined efforts are being made to keep it out of the timbered sections. One hundred and fifty sections have been burned over and the loss will amount to many thousands of dollars.
