Donnybrook Fair Americanized A fairly accurate representation of the genuine Donnybrook Fair was given on Sunday afternoon at Newport Beach when a dozen or more youths engaged in a warm mix-up to settle real and imaginary grievances and proceeded with strict impartiality to hit every head that bobbed up in the vicinity of the dance pavilion. Nobody was seriously injured, the net result being several blackened eyes and a few bruised faces. Santa Ana was well represented in the scrap, and if reports are true half a dozen residents of that city will be called upon to explain to the Newport justice of the peace just how it all happened. Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, July 29—Celery growers in the Peatlands are responsible for the statement that the prospect for the crop now being planted is exceedingly good. Hundreds of Japs are now putting in the plants. Word has been received from Washington that the Talbert postoffice, three miles northeast of this beach, will cease to exist after August 15. It is not believed that the closing of the office will seriously inconvenience any one besides the Japs who use it in sending their money to Japan. Newport Beach Now that one saloon has been opened in Newport Beach, an effort to establish a second one is being made. A representative of a Los Angeles brewery offers to erect a substantial brick building to house a cafe, provided a bar-room is allowed. The city trustees have not as yet given a decision. A party composed of A. E. Ott, A. LOCAL EVENT In the sight of a dozen people Franklin Johnson, wife of Gerald of the Balboa Heights near drowning at Balboa Sun became excited while in which was little over waist sank twice before her husband in and pulled her to shore. A party composed of A. E. Ott, A. C. Newell, William, Frank and W. H. Sutherland, while fishing on Sunday encountered a school of barracuda. One hundred and twenty-nine of the fish, weighing 450 pounds, were caught. Ties are now on the ground for the Pacific Electric spur to the water front, and a large number of laborers are now at work. Defensive Programme Omaha, Neb., July 29—Under orders to proceed to Manila with quickest possible dispatch a party of 129 engineers, electricians and sappers, hurriedly mobilized from various army posts in the Central West passed through Omaha today. The officers in charge refused to discuss the reasons for the move, but it was understood among the men that they were to mine Manila Bay and then lay similar defences at Subig Bay recently selected as the main naval base in the Philippines. The men were entrained on twenty-four hours notice in response to rush orders from Washington. They will be joined at Manila by the Fifty-fourth Coast Artillery. In army circles the move is accepted as an indication that the government has awakened to the situation in the Pacific as it has been pointed out repeatedly in military reports. It is well known that the lack of docking facilities makes a prolonged stay of a strong fleet in the Pacific practically impossible. The big floating dock, Dewey, now at Olongapo, constitutes the entire resources of the government in the Philippines. The fortifications at Subig bay scarcely have been begun and Manila bay is no better defended. The logical use of an elaborate system of mines in the harbors at Manila and Subig Bay would be to prevent the entrance of a probable enemy until the Atlantic Fleet could be hurried fully at their home in hometown guests, Mrs. Ida Churchill, bel Leonard and Miss Nina of Rochester, Minnesota. The fortifications at Subig bay scarcely have been begun and Manila bay is no better defended. The logical use of an elaborate system of mines in the harbors at Manila and Subig Bay would be to prevent the entrance of a probable enemy until the Atlantic Fleet could be hurried around the Horn and brought within striking distance of the Philippines. That a large force of engineers is being hurried to Manila to reenforce those already on the ground is taken to mean that the government suddenly has discovered urgent reasons for haste in pushing its defensive programme to consummation. By a vote of fifty-five to two the San Bernardino county good roads convention, which met at San Bernardino on Saturday the 27th went on record as favoring the issuance of bonds to meet the expense of this work.
