VOLUME XXXVII ANAH
Prof. Mills on Good Roads
EDITOR GAZETTE:—In your issue of July 11, you say in speaking of the road bonds. "We feel the sentiment in favor of bonding the county to permit Santa Ana to pay off her political obligations is altogether too insignificant to put the county to the expense of holding a bond election." I was sorry to see this as I had hoped there would be at least one live paper in this end of the county in favor of the bonds. However, about the same time the Orange Post and Fullerton Tribune came out against the bonding proposition. Since then the commercial bodies of Anaheim and Fullerton have been asked to express themselves on the subject. Without a dissenting vote they favored the bonds provided the roads are to be distributed over the county; also favored making the bond issue large enough to do this; the immediate circulation of the petitions; naming the commission and calling the election. A gentleman at the oil wells called on a great many of the prominent men there and all favored the bonds if the roads came out to Olinda, while nearly all were against the bonds if the roads did not come out there. These commercial bodies include in their membership many heavy taxpayers, and these to a man favor the bonds. On the other hand the "old Mullinix-McWilliams"

Many invitations have been sent for the happy event and a larger ering will be present. The ceremony will be performed by Rev. B. A. son of San Diego, formerly pastor of San Diego church here.
Miss Edna McWilliams, sister bride will be maid of honor and Visel, of Santa Ana, will accept the groom as best man.
The bride's dress is described very fine creation of point de eser muslin and taffeta, trimmed Irish lace. The bride will shower bouquet of pink carnation.

After the ceremony the new ried couple will leave on a short moon tour, and on their return at home to their friends in this.

mediate circulation of the petitions; naming the commission and calling the election. These commercial bodies include in their membership many heavy taxpayers, and these to a man favor the bonds. On the other hand the "old guard" who always have their faces resolutely set against any and all improvement are against the bonds; likewise the majority of the newspapers are against the bonding proposition.
The "old guard" will be able to get following enough to make the fight interesting, but I firmly believe we can get two thirds of the votes for the bonds up this way in spite of the "old guard" and the newspapers' sentiment is vastly different since people talk and think about roads for their vicinity.
As to the cost of these roads it is not excessive compared with the benefits. One assessed at $2,000 will have his taxes increased less than $4.00 per year for the time the bonds run, or about 1c a day. If he be a smoker and will cut out but one and one-half five-cent cigars each week he will save enough to pay him out; if he be an orange grower a box of Valencia oranges will do it; if a walnut grower a half a barley sack of walnuts will see him through. to the Grove as suggested, the countyseat town would have connection with
the beach town just the same, only it
would be two or three miles further than originally mapped out. And it
is seriously questioned whether Santa
Ana would patronize a line to Huntington Beach so liberally since she has Newport Beach—a very fine watering place—on the other side, and not so far. While on the other hand, this city and the Grove and contiguous territory want close trolley connection to the coast, and will do all in their power to assist the electric company in securing the right of way. A line such as this would be a paying one to the company.
Capt. Williams of the chamber of commerce was heartily in favor of the line as suggested by Mr. Lee. He was willing to do all in his power to accomplish the desired end.
Director Wickett spoke in favor of the trolley line to the coast, as did also Director Quarton. Both gentlemen looked upon the project as doing the greatest good to the greatest number and failed to see how the electric company could afford to ignore us.
Secretary Walker was ready to put his shoulder to the wheel at any time and help the good work along. And then, with trolley connection between the Grove and this city, the new union high school would perhaps be easier of accomplishment.
Richard Melrose, recently appointed a committeeman by the chamber of commerce to interview the railway people upon the trolley situation, was present and addressed the assemblage upon the electric railway subject. He had met with Engineer Pillsbury socially upon several occasions and was of opinion Anaheim would secure trolley connection with the coast at no distant day. Mr. Lee's proposition appealed to him as a feasible route, one that would be of inestimable benefit to the entire section.

upon the electric railway subject. He had met with Engineer Pillsbury socially upon several occasions and was of opinion Anaheim would secure trolley connection with the coast at no distant day. Mr. Lee's proposition appealed to him as a feasible route, one that would be of inestimable benefit to the entire section.
A resolution was passed unanimously endorsing the projected electric railway to the seacoast, and pledging the hearty support of the local organization in securing right of way for the same.
The advantages to be gained by securing an electric road as outlined by our enterprising neighbors of Garden Grove are manifold, and the situation as it now presents itself to our citizens is one for immediate and harmonious action.
Prof. A. A. Mills was in attendance and again asked for an official expression of the chamber of commerce relative to the county bonding proposition for good roads. Mr. Mills is anxious to have the county build good roads, and to vote bonds for their construction, he says, is the only thing to do. He desired an official announcement from the local organization to work on in his campaign of education, and requested the directors to go on record in regard to the bonds.
The board declared the local organization was in favor of good roads, sure, and the voting of bonds for the same, with the proviso however that the paved highways be equally constructed all over the county. Under these conditions the directors would sanction the issuance of bonds, otherwise not.
The same sentiment exists at Fullerton. In fact, this is the feeling of 90 per cent of the people in the northern end of the county.
