ELECTRIC ROAD TO COAST Electric trolley rumors are rife these days and a line from the coast through Garden Grove to this city and on to Fullerton and the country northeast is being frequently mentioned as a feasible route and one that would receive unbounded favor by every resident of this section. The road from Huntington Beach to Santa Ana, it is said, will in all probability be built. The Garden Grove people are alert to the situation and are striving to get in on that line. A line branching from this road at Garden Grove to Anaheim is one that is now engaging the attention of people who have been giving the trolley situation attention the past few months. Should this program be carried out the Grove would be made an important junction. Engineer Pillsbury has made several visits to Anaheim of late and has been in consultation with prominent citizens in regard to a road through this city. A delegation of citizens of Garden Grove met with the chamber of commerce on Wednesday evening to talk over the situation, and it is the consensus of opinion of those in a position to talk authoritatively that this city will be on the trolley line to the coast if the people bestir themselves and assist in the getting of a right of way. proposition, a most important in the upbuilding of a modern, sive city. The new road would traverse a section of country noted for its productivity and which only awaits easy access to the outer world to make it the best in Southern California. Chamber of Commerce The directors of the chamber of commerce met in special session on Friday evening and audited and ordered paid a batch of bills, among them being the bill of a Los Angeles firm for printing 10,000 leaflets descriptive of this city, and the accounts for services and merchandise incidental to the giving of the recent banquet. The total amounted to $182. Prof. Mills stepped in and inquired what was doing in regard to the good roads bonding proposition. He had heard that petitions were out for signatures asking the supervisors to appoint the commissioners, but had not run across any himself. The professor is in favor of bonding the county for good roads provided all sections of the county get an equal share of the paved highways. He scouted the idea that the Savage act was unconstitutional and allowed that Col. Finley's little map with its eighty-six miles of road was a dead one. Mr. Mills wanted an expression of the board in reference to the bonding but owing to the absence of several members those present—Messrs. Walker, Williams and Wickett—refrained from taking action. Individually the directors favored the good roads, along with other enterprising citizens, provided we all got an equal whack at them. It was the consensus of opinion that a campaign of education along these lines be inaugurated. It is said the county’s assessed valuation at present will stand bonding for good roads to the extent of $800,000. The murderous work was done all so quickly that when people living in the vicinity, attracted by the rapid footfalls upon the sidewalks, the firing of the shots and the pitiful cries of the victim, appeared upon the scene the assassins had escaped. A chinaman rushed to the prostrate man, life being not yet extinct, and endeavored to gain a version of how the assault occurred. The dying man made an attempt to speak but could not articulate and expired shortly after. The body was removed to Backs’ undertaking parlors. On Thursday Coroner Smith, assisted by District Attorney Davis, held an inquest. The verdict of the jury was that the chinaman met his death in accordance with the facts related, but by parties unknown. The funeral occurred next day in the usual chinese fashion. Officers worked on the case but nothing could be learned to warrant the making of any arrests. Two high-up chinamen of the Hop Sings came down from Los Angeles to investigate into the murder, and pronounced it the work of highbinders employed by the rival tong. It is said three hatchetmen were imported from San Francisco recently to kill a bunch of Hop Sings. Walking on the pier and along the beach, fishing, bathing, quietly resting, or riding on the electric cars, each in his way took his outing. But when it came to the dinner all were of the same mind. It is wonderful how we all agree when it comes to discussing the good things the good mothers and wives provide. And when at 5:20 the call for "all aboard" was heard a tired but well pleased crowd was ready to go home. One man only was left.
