LOCAL EVENTS Manager Thompson of the Puente oil company reports business brisk with him. He delivers a load of distillate, containing 650 gallons, to the pumping plant of the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation company in Sycamore Flat, up the river every other day. The company is his largest patron. George Wagner, L. Hennig, U. W. Hall and others are shipping a carload of spuds to Los Angeles daily, receiving about $2 per sack. There is a good profit at this price. A year or two ago spuds were selling at about $1.25 per sack at this season of the year. J. H. Boney holds the record for the trip from this city to the Landing, which distance he covered in his automobile on the Fourth in 35 minutes. The previous record was 38 minutes. Mr. Boney cut across lots at Benedict, only hitting the high places. Jacob Stern has purchased 406 acres of land at Richfield, along the line of the new electric line from Los Nietos to Yorba. The road will continue up River canyon to Riverside. The land is being subdivided and will be placed upon the market in small tracts. Fred Schmidt, superintendant of bridge-building for the Santa Fe, has a force of ten men constructing four bridges north and south of this city, which are made necessary by the new 85-pound steel rails the company is laying. Mr. Schmidt has driven piles for these bridges and will complete the work in a few days. The bridge across the Santa Ana river south of town will remain as it is, it having been reconstructed a year ago. Judge West has handed the drys a Judge West has handed the drys a lemon in his decisions in the Czarske cases. He last week ordered Czarske released from jail on habeas corpus, and granted Mrs. Czarske a new trial. Both had been convicted of conducting a taphouse at Santa Ana illegally. Czarske was sentenced to jail for thirty days and to pay a fine of $200, while the lady was sentenced to pay a $200 fine. Czarske had served out his jail sentence, and was doing time on his money fine when liberated. The Judge held that sentence had been meted out to Czarske without legal warrant, and that the transcript in the lady's case was faulty. The lady will stand trial in the superior court. Take your prescriptions to O. A. Mullinix. Lynn Brandenberg, the eleven-year-old son of Wm. Brandenberg, was seriously injured the evening of the Fourth by the premature explosion of a skyrocket which he was engaged in firing. The rocket had been previously ignited, but failed to perform. Lynn disposed of his other fireworks, and saying he had just one more rocket to dispose of before going to bed, picked up the rocket, attempting to touch it off. A premature explosion followed, which burned the lad about the face and eyes so seriously that the loss of his eyesight was at one time feared. With careful nursing and medical attention Lynn is coming out all right, and is able to leave the dark room where he has been kept since the accident. He will probably be all right again in a day or two. Postmaster Duckworth has received eighty signatures asking for the establishment of a route of rural free delivery southeast of town. For years the government has been unable to secure sufficient help in various departments of the public service at the salaries above indicated. Hence, the last congress raised the wages of nearly all Civil Service employes. The regular semi-annual Civil Service examinations will hereafter be held in San Bernardino. This will be a great convenience to applicants all over Southern California. Those who attend the San Bernardino Business College will have the double advantage of making their preparation and taking the examination at the same place. This is the only school in the state making a specialty of coaching for the U. S. Civil Service and assisting young people to secure Civil Service appointments. Any information on the subject could be had by writing the San Bernardino Business College.
