Theft of Bicycles
A man giving the name of H. F. Meyers is in custody at the city jail on a charge of grand larceny. On Monday he procured three bicycles, one each from Beebe, Spoerl and Heinrich, saying he desired to use them for a short ride. He shipped them to Los Angeles by express.
On Tuesday, failing to return the wheels, his game was discovered and Constable Litten went to Los Angeles and placed him under arrest. In the express office were found seven bicycles shipped by him from this city, Fullerton and Orange.
It will be given a hearing before Judge Howard.

The quarterly meeting of the Tri-Counties Beforestation committee was held at Santa Ana on Monday and Tuesday. The meeting was very well attended, the following delegates being present from San Bernardino, Orange and Riverside counties:
San Bernardino—W. L. Vestal, Seth Marshall, George Atwood, M. M. Randall, E. J. Yokam, W. W. Wilcox, D. Johnson.
Riverside — George Frost, Francis Cuttle, E. P. Clarke.
Orange — Wm. McLauchlin, A. Pierroti, J. B. Rea, A. S. Bradford, A. Armor, E. E. Keech.
Forest Supervisor R. H. Charlton delivered an address, saying that the present scheme of protection is to keep up a constant patrol during the summer, and to build good trails and fire breaks. Twelve miles of fire break has been made in the last winter.

Forest Supervisor R. H. Chariton delivered an address, saying that the present scheme of protection is to keep up a constant patrol during the summer, and to build good trails and fire breaks. Twelve miles of fire break has been made in the last winter.
The finance committee made some important recommendations regarding plans for raising additional funds, as a result of which the chairman was instructed to appoint a committee of three to investigate the feasibility of securing new legislation that would enable the committee to raise additional funds by direct taxation. This committee will report at the next quarterly meeting.
The Orange county delegation reported that the supervisors had agreed to allow the committee $600, the sum assessed each county by the committee. There had been some objection to Orange county paying the same assessment as Riverside and San Bernardino counties, which derive much greater benefit from the work of reforestation by reason of larger areas. There seems to be some disposition to reduce the proportion of Orange county's assessment next year. J. B. Neff has resigned from the finance committee in favor of W. B. Hervey, on account of lack of time for the work.
The revenue available at the present time for the work of reforestation amounts to $11,200. The state and federal governments each appropriated $5000 and each county $600. If laws can be enacted empowering the county supervisors to levy a direct tax on all irrigated land and an additional tax of between $10,000 and $20,000 on the power companies who have privileges in the San Bernardino mountains, it would mean a total revenue of nearly $50,000.
Chairman Cuttle was authorized to prepare a pamphlet outlining the work already accomplished, together with proposed work, the expense not to exceed $20. The by-laws provide that no sum in excess of $20 be allowed without the approval of the executive committee, but the chairman reported that he had found it necessary to exceed his authority in this regard on a few occasions, one of which was in securing photographs and cuts used in several newspapers and which he proposed to use in the forthcoming pamphlet. This pamphlet will not be for general distribution but merely follows: Fernando Chaparro B. Bronson and Immaculata

This pamphlet will not be for general distribution but merely for state, county and federal officers who have power to provide funds for the work. Besides this pamphlet the committee have in preparation a very complete report to be presented to the authorities at both Washington and Sacramento, outlining the work. It has not been decided whether or not this report will be presented in person or by communication. The report of the committee on resolutions recommending the adoption of the following resolution, was carried unanimously:
"Resolved, That the committee fully recognizing the power and influence of the press of Southern California in giving information on the subject of reforestation, and in the moulding of public sentiment in its favor and tender its thanks to the press and earnestly invokes the aid of all newspapers in furtherance of the objects and aims of this committee."

In reply to a query made by Gov. Gillett at the request of fruit growers of California interested, the Secretary of Agriculture states in a telegram received by the Governor a few days ago that the fruit interests should not be alarmed over the passage by the last congress of an act which forbids the use of sulphur in all food products. The fruit men of California use sulphur in drying practically every variety of fruit, and, fearing that the passage of this bill would prevent a continuance of the present methods of curing, they appealed to the governor to intercede with the national authorities in their behalf. In his telegram to Gov. Gillet, Secretary Wilson says that he does not believe the California fruit-drying process will be affected by the new rule, the intimation being that the new order applies only to the entrance of sulphur directly into the makeup of food products. The secretary adds that the rule has not yet been signed by all of the departments by which it must be before it goes into effect and that he will be glad to receive a representative of California and conduct a hearing.

In the annual endurance run contest automobiles from Los Angeles to Diego via Elsinore and Riverside should be noted that each of the cars handled by Weisel and Sandilands of city, viz., the Maxwell, Moline, and Wayne, all made clean or defect scores. There were sixty-five of various makes entered in the contest. The roads on the run, especially the last half, were bad and the other decidedly tropical. In the race at Lakeside Sunday and Monday the four-mile race for cars costing $1500 to $3000 the Ford won in 4 and 47 sec., the Moline being a second. On Monday in the run-at race for cars costing less than $100 the Ford again won. From re-uses from participants in the endur-run and races the steadiness and selection of the running of the above cars was little short of marvel.
