LOCAL EVENTS
Miss Julia Nemetz came home from Los Angeles Sunday to visit her folks for the day.
P.W. Hallicy, a well-known resident of Huntington Beach, was in town on Sunday.
F. Conrad and wife left Sunday for a two-weeks' stay at the Capistrano hot springs.
O. M. Skinner & Son report the sale of a 1907 Reo touring car to John Wagner.
Hans Weisel graduated from a law college in Los Angeles on Monday and with a class of thirteen was admitted to the bar.
Mrs. R. L. Thiebaud and son Morton of Exeter, Cal., are visiting the former's brother and sister, W. H. Spake and Mrs. Goble.
The monthly meeting of the W. C. T. U. will be held at the home of Mrs. Adams, corner Olive and Chartress streets, Friday afternoon at 2:30. Subject for discussion, "Press Work."
Miss H. L. Howitz, assistant in Howard's photograph studio, has returned after a very pleasant week's outing at Bay Island.
Wm. Kretchmer has the contract to erect a sixteen-room building for the Green Wing gun club, to be used as a clubhouse for members of that organization. The structure will be 39x44.
Charles Baxter of Brookshurst received intelligence Sunday announcing the death at North Hatley, Canada, June 20th, of S. K. Holman, aged 90 years. Mr. Holman was well and favorably known here, having resided in this city many years. His death is mourned by a large circle of friends.
Frank Shanley is spending a weeks at the beach resorts.
Edwin Meese of Oakland was the past week, a guest of Miss Hammann.

Members of the retail merchant association held an interesting business session on Friday. Later the memorial assembled in the banquet room of Fellows' hall and partook of a beautiful spread prepared by Caterers and Gibson. Matters of local interest were discussed, among which was street paving proposition, many pressing themselves as being in favor of that improvement.
Quite a number of our musically clined people attended the conference given by Miss Emma Guthaus at lerton Friday evening. A program a high order of merit was rendered including vocal and instrumental sections and readings. Miss Guthaus favored the assemblage with a solo and was compelled to respond hearty encore. Rev. and Mrs. A. B. Markle celebrated the fifty-second anniversary of their wedding on Friday, when they entertained friends at a turkey dinner. Rev. and Mrs. Jolly of Huntington Beach celebrated their first wedding anniversary at the Markle household at the same time. An enjoyable time was participated in.
Mr. Pillsbury of the Pacific Electric company, accompanied by P. A. Stanton, was in town Friday. They were in consultation with several citizens and were driven about the city on an observation tour. Mr. Pillsbury has made several visits to Anaheim within the past few weeks and knowing ones express the opinion that this city will be on the cross-country electric line from Riverside to the coast, presumably Bay City.
Anaheim Aerie, No. 947, F. O. E., initiated eight members into the aerie on Monday evening. The Santa Ana team was in attendance and officiated in the proceedings. At the conclusion of the lodge work the local aerie entertained at a banquet, upward of one hundred being present. There was speechifying and the relating of reminiscences which served to keep the assemblage in the best of spirits. It was late ere the Eagles departed and all were glad for having been present. The local aerie is growing constantly, several candidates being slated for the "goat ride" next Monday evening.
A fire started on the Santa Fe oil lease on Sunday morning that threatened great damage. About 200 acres were burned over, destroying a large quantity of hay. The entire force of men, numbering nearly two hundred, were pressed into service as a fire brigade and with wet sacks fought the flames, preventing the fire from reaching the derricks and oil tanks. The flames were finally extinguished, and including vocal and instrumental sections and readings. Miss Guth favored the assemblage with a sopor solo and was compelled to respond hearty encore. Fred Rimpau contemplates returning to his home in Fairbank, A.; next week, after an enjoyable visit with his parents here. His wife remains for a further stay. Fred has responsible position with a lead mercantile firm at Fairbank, and common with all Arizonaans, new tires of singing the praises of the library. He predicts a great development of the mining industry and large increase in population with the next few years, and that more mines will be uncovered than is dreamed of by the casual reader.

The flames were finally extinguished, and the damage was confined to the destruction of a quantity of hay and feed. The origin of the fire is unknown.
Shortly afterward fire started in one of the pumping plants on the Columbia lease, destroying the same completely. The fire was caused by the inexperience of the man in charge.

Word has been received here from Weiser, Idaho, that the manager of the Washington American league baseball club, has, after great effort and much rivalry, signed Walter Johnson, champion pitcher of the northwest, who holds the world's record for the greatest number of innings pitched without a run being scored off his delivery. Johnson, however, will not leave Weiser until after the close of the season, July 14. His record without a run is seventy-five innings, and has struck out 164 men in eleven games pitched.

County Superintendent of Carpenter says there is a scarred men teachers in the county. He that a number of country schools calling for men principals but there are none to be had. The school board has adjourned untilust, when it will meet to make suggestions in regard to the course study. No radical changes are complied. Mr. Krick, as a cowboy, prevented the conductor collecting his ticket by aid of his six-shooter and knife, Miss Gertrude Asher was a pretty Japanese maiden, Mrs. Falkenstein a Swiss peasant girl, Mrs. Helmsen and Mrs. Krick were pretty Dutch girls, Mrs. Bradford was sweet sixteen, and Master Christian and Ephriam Helmsen were Teddy Roosevelt and Uncle Sam. There were students, bridgets, nurses and Turks on the train also. The porters passed lemon soda to the thirsty, and a stop of twenty minutes was made for dinner—coffee, buns and bologna sausage. When all reached the end of their journey, several musical selections were enjoyed.
