Los Alamitos
Although the winter precipitation ceased in March the crops are doing finely. Some irrigation from wells is now being done on land having a sandy subsol, but on the whole the reservoir of moisture stored in the soil from the excessive winter rains comes well up to the surface from capillary attraction and an exceptionally good beet tonnage on the average is anticipated.
The factory pumping plant is sending a big stream of water to the ranch of the Lawrence Agricultural company for the irrigation of 400 acres of beets. The Los Dos Ranchos company is also irrigating a large tract from flowing artesian wells.
The candidates for appointment to the justiceship now vacant, are Arthur Philbrick and Will R. McAllep.
A sensation was sprung on the sugar factory town by the leaking out of fact of the secret marriage of Earl V. Bennis and Miss Nina Cheatham, which, it transpires, took place at San Diego July 13th last.
While this was with the consent of the mother of the 16 year old girl, Mrs. J. W. Watts, the stepfather was all the while kept in blissful ignorance of the happy event until now.
At first his wrath knew no bounds, and pistol shots in the dead of night, accidental on the part of Mexicans, roused the neighboring people with the idea that a sure enough tragedy was being enacted. Finally, after weeping copiously, the stepfather listened to explanations, and now his habitual smile wreathes his countenance. Meantime the forgiven young people have set up housekeeping in the Evans Miller cottage, and with the best wishes of all their friends, doubtless they will live happily ever after.

Forestry and Irrigation
The seventh semi-annual meeting of the Counties Committee of the California Promotion Committee, which convened at Petaluma on June 25th was the most representative that has been held, showing the representation of any of the delegates present from fifty organizations. This is a growth shows the increasing interest being taken in these meetings results and values are becoming widely recognized.
The subject of the meeting was forestry and irrigation in California; the papers read before the conference covered various phases of both lems, pointing out just what would accrue to the different state by a broad policy conservation and reforestation ber lands and the extension of tion systems.
John L. Camm, president of Caluma Chamber of Commerce, led the delegates and spoke in terms of the work of the California Promotion Committee, and one of the Counties Committee Chief Andrea Sbarboro thanked him cordial reception and the host extended by the citizens of Petaluma.
Rufus P. Jennings, chairman California Promotion Committee, a report of the San Diego meeting in December last, showing the vive work accomplished by the mittee on California Harbors in State and Federal action. Mittees on credentials and resumes were then appointed, represent entire state.
In the regular program the foliage spoke at the morning session:

Skilled men and helpers are being employed daily at the sugar factory, and Superintendent Lawrence is booking registrations for positions during factory run, preference being given as usual to former employees.
Potatoes for Pencils
Washington, June 14.—Potatoes are now being used in Germany for making lead pencils, and it is said that in a short time the wooden pencil will be driven out of the market. The new product is slightly heavier than the cedar-wood article, but it is the same in size, form and appearance, admits of sharpening more easily, and can be made at a nominal price. A company has been founded in Berlin to manufacture the article. The cost of manufacture is estimated at $0.00928. The second quality pencil can be made at a cost of only $0.00596. At the estimated production of 48,000 pencils a day the yearly production will be 14,400,000 pencils. Exports of these pencils from Germany to foreign countries for a year equaled 15,166 tons, or a total of 3,033,200,000 pencils. Cedar wood is expensive and its quantity limited, while the supply of potatoes is unlimited.

Famine in Havana cigars is threatened should the strike of cigarmakers in the Cuban capital continue much longer. Dealers throughout the city have been informed by the importing jobbers that most of the popular brands of Havana cigars, especially those in the dark colors, are exhausted. The strike has now lasted three weeks. Prices are going up.
New York smokes about 200,000 imported cigars a day, the prices ranging from 10 cents up to fifty. The most popular size is the Perfecto, and this was the first to be exhausted. Of cigars of all kinds, including stogies, New Yorkers consume 1,000,000 a day, the weekly cigar bill of the metropolis amounting to $300,000, nearly $16,000,000 per year.

Wishing to introduce in our country the employ of machinery worked by mechanical motors, for the different stages of the cultivation of the vine, where such a cultivation is specialized and where the condition of the soil will allow it, on the approval of our minister, secretary of state for agriculture, industry and commerce, we have decreed and actually decree:
Article 1—An international competition is open for machinery adapted to the cultivation of the vine with mechanical motors of any system; and such a competition will be held in Palermo in the autumn of 1907.
Article 2—The prizes fixed for this competition are as follows: First prize, a diploma of honor and 10,000 francs, besides the acquisition on the part of the minister for agriculture, industry and commerce, of two mechanical motors of the system which has got the prize; second prize, a gold medal and 3000 francs.
Article 3—The applications for admission to the competition, accompanied by all the technical and economical information which the exhibitors may deem useful regarding the working of their apparatus, pointing out in a special manner the size, the weight, the potentiality, and the mode of working of the same, must be sent no later than the 15th of September, current year, to the Ministry for Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, General Direction of Agriculture.
Article 4—The machines, or apparatus, for the said competition must reach Palermo no later than the 16th of October, 1907, addressed to "Direction of the Society of Sicilian Acclimation and Agriculture."

must reach Palermo no later than the 16th of October, 1907, addressed to "Direction of the Society of Sicilian Acclimation and Agriculture."
Article 5—The adaptability of the machinery to perform the required work in the vineyard, their practicability and convenience, will be judged by a special committee appointed by the ministry. The said committee will fix the rules to be followed in the different trials, and the criteria which will guide the committee in the awarding of the prizes.
The trials will serve as an examination of the machinery as regards the simplicity of working, the quantity of combustible consumed, its potentiality as well as its adaptability to the exigencies of the various works, and therefore they will be directed to the choice of those apparatuses which will give better proof of perfect working in the vineyards, which may be found in the conditions specified in the seventh article below. Such trials must give evidence of the practicalness of the machinery and the cost of working.
Article 6—All the expenses, which the above said trials will involve, will be sustained by the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce; carriage expenses excepted.
Should the exhibitor or his representative fail to be present at the trials, his apparatus shall not undergo any trial, and will be declared out of competition.
