VOLUME XXXVII ELECTRIC RAILWAY TALK Jacob Stern a few days ago said to a reporter for this journal that Mr. Huntington would probably soon ask the people of this city and Fullerton to show him what they can do in the matter of procuring right of way for an electric railway joining the two towns and continuing southwesterly to Huntington Beach. This road, he said, would probably continue east through Placentia to Richfield, and up River canyon to Riverside. Mr. Stern is in close touch with the railway magnate, and his statements are entitled to careful consideration on the part of our people. He is now engaged in closing up right-of-way for an electric line from Los Nietos to Richfield, through La Habra valley. He has this right-of-way nearly closed up, and states he will begin condemnation proceedings against two or three parties in order to complete the roadway. From Garden Grove and Huntington Beach come confirmatory reports about the purpose of Mr. Huntington to build this cross-country line. A report from Garden Grove reaching this city yesterday is to the effect that the section is after a new electric road, and it is going after it hard and with the energy Lee, W. L. Jencks and Edward was chosen to see the railroad and to find out what action it This committee will report no day evening, and the citizen place can be depended upon whatever is necessary to help work along. Gas War Off Negotiations for the sale of lerton gas company to the company of that town are in and the threatened gas war ably not materialize. Some weeks ago a rival con this right-of-way nearly closed up, and states he will begin condemnation proceedings against two or three parties in order to complete the roadway. From Garden Grove and Huntington Beach come confirmatory reports about the purpose of Mr. Huntington to build this cross-country line. A report from Garden Grove reaching this city yesterday is to the effect that the section is after a new electric road, and it is going after it hard and with the energy that is characteristic of that neighborhood. A mass meeting of citizens was held and the situation discussed. A committee was appointed to interview the Pacific Electric authorities to determine what can be done to help the movement along. The meeting was presided over by George Reyburn and W. L. Jencks was secretary. A number of talks were made by Garden Grove citizens and every man was strong for getting together to bring the proposed Huntington Beach road through Garden Grove. Already it is understood that line has a right of way up to within three miles of the Grove. A committee consisting of Harry "WE STRIVE TO PLEASE." Addresses were made by Richard Melrose, H. A. Dickel, John Resh, I. Asher, Fred Ahlborn, Wm. Schumacher, Prof. Walker, H. Stern, W. M. Wickett, F. A. Yungbluth, Henry Adams and others. Pledges of financial assistance and cordial support were made and a sub-scription list started. It was the consensus of opinion that $1500 could be raised for the event, and this amount will probably be largely exceeded. Henry Adams, former president of the celebration committee, resigned owing to a press of business engagements. After discussion Mr. Melrose was selected for the position, and accepted the honor in a well-worded address which sent enthusiasm through every one present. Mr. Dickel spoke earnestly in support of the celebration, he being heartily in favor of it from the start. Mr. Resh suggested that the finance committee have a larger sub-committee and the president adopted the suggestion by appointing the following to SPECIAL SALE out our entire line of Gros. Mr. Dickel spoke earnestly in support of the celebration, he being heartily in favor of it from the start. Mr. Resh suggested that the finance committee have a larger sub-committee and the president adopted the suggestion by appointing the following to assist Mr. Dickel in soliciting funds: Henry Adams, Capt. Stern, Edward Stewart, John Resh, Wm. Schumacher, Fred Chamberlain, Prof. Waldorf, Prof. Walker, Fred Yungblut, Otto Storm, Max Nebelung, Godfrey Stock, Wm. Wickett and Joseph Fiscus. These gentlemen will make a canvass of the city for funds and it is hoped the subscriptions will be liberal. Meetings will be held weekly, the determination being to inaugurate popular enthusiasm in support of the semi centennial celebration. Word comes from Los Angeles that all the former Anaheimers residing in that city will attend the celebration. The city will be gaily decorated, one of the features of the celebration being the electrical display at night. From this time on there will be no doubt as to the celebration being the most successful as well as most largely attended in the history of the city. Soliciting committees are out this week for funds and report a ready response to their appeals. Over $1000 has been secured, and another thousand is in sight. Reported Frost A report reached this city on Tuesday evening that the good-roads bonding syndicate had met a frost at the meeting of Smeltzer celery growers that afternoon, and as a result the bond election was in danger of being called off. The celery growers held their annual meeting on Tuesday, and the afternoon was devoted to hearing the Santa Ana wise men declaim upon the virtues of a great bond issue for good roads. Many questions were asked the syndicate by the assembled growers, and there existed considerable doubt as to the propriety of the bonding scheme. After the wise men returned to Santa Ana it was given out in the evening, so our informant has it, that unless a nual meeting on Tuesday, and the afternoon was devoted to hearing the Santa Ana wise men declaim upon the virtues of a great bond issue for good roads. After the wise men returned to Santa Ana it was given out in the evening, so our informant has it, that unless a greater unanimity prevailed in favor of the bonds, the comedy might just as well have the curtain rung down upon it. Debating Trophies A committee consisting of Floyd Lorbeer, president of the Southern California Debating League, and Miss Edith Jordan, representative of Stanford University, will present the championship banner and the "Stanford Cup" to the Anaheim high school at 3 o'clock on Friday, June 7th. The presentation will occur at the high school. Visitors will be welcome. Miss Jordan is a daughter of David Starr Jordan, president of Stanford University. By sprinted for the orchard, Decision Favors Geis Judge Howard on Tuesday entered judgment in favor of George Geis and against A. E. Wallis of Los Angeles in a restaurant deal, in which Geis' every act was vindicated. Wallis tried to collect $100 from Townsend & Selfridge and $175 from George Geis for the alleged sale of a restaurant. Geis intended buying the Anaheim restaur-ant, but the owners sold same to Mrs. C. S. Baxter on May 14th. She was surprised to find A. E. Wallis, hotel broker, had placed an attachment on the premises and the constable had locked up the restaurant, when she did not owe anybody, and that Wallis should act so hastily in trespassing on her rights and damaging her business. The case of Wallis vs. Geis before Justice Howard took up Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Arguments of Tipton and Callor for plaintiffs, and F. C. Spencer for defendant, was concluded on Tuesday noon. All witnesses testified that Wallis never sold the restau-rant here, and even the plaintiff admitted the deal was off and contract never completed; so no fee of $175 was due for commission. Justice Howard decided in favor of defendant, giving judgment for costs against plaintiff. The costs will probably sum up $200. He engaged his younger brother altercation.
