LOCAL EVENTS
Rev. Mitchell has taken up his residence in his newly finished cottage on Olive street.
A new four-chair barber shop is talked of, to be housed in a new brick building shortly to be in course of erection on East Center street.
Miss Mildred Callahan will spend vacation with her parents in Toronto. She contemplates returning in the fall to resume her duties in the primary school.
Tom Scott left for Alessandro Monday morning, hitting the high places on his way out of town. Scott reported to Company E two weeks ago, on the occasion of the call to arms, and has been living on the fat of the land ever since. He had come to be a professional diner-out, and had more invitations to dinner than he could accept.
Mrs. Carolina B. Tuffree, widow of the late Col. J. K. Tuffree, was married in Los Angeles last week to Mr. Pitman of Louisville. The newly wedded couple left for a honeymoon trip through the south, and on their return will be at home to friends at the Placentia ranch. The groom is a younger brother to a former son-in-law of the bride.
A special walnut growers' institute will be held at Whittier June 5th and 6th, which walnut men throughout Orange county are invited to attend. Prof. Wickson will be present from Berkeley, as will also Prof. Smith, resident professor in charge of the state laboratory. Judge I. F. Leib of San Jose, one of the largest walnut growers in the state, who is preparing to plant a large walnut plantation in Mexico, will be present and address the meeting. J. J. Hunter was over from the north side on Saturday transacting business and extending the glad hand to numerous friends hereaway.
Frank Earl on Thursday evening received by telegram the sad news of the death of his mother at Ridgewa Penn., an operation for appendicitis having proven fatal. A few days previously he had been informed by letter the operation was eminently successful and that his mother was recovering rapidly.
C. F. Grim and family leave shortly for an extended visit with relatives east. Mrs. Grim and the children will go to Potsdam, N.Y., where she will be the guest of relatives, while Mr. Grim will meet his brother at Chicago and will later take in the Jamestown exposition.
Mrs. A. J. Anson of Marshalltown Iowa, aunt of Bruce Anson, who has been spending the winter with friends at Hollywood, was a guest of the family of that gentleman the past week. She departed yesterday for Hollywood and will shortly proceed to her hometown in the east.
G. F. Martin and wife left on Tuesday for Tempe, A.T., where they will make their permanent residence. They spent several weeks there, returning this city last week to arrange for the removal of their household goods that point. Mr. Martin contemplated going into the butcher business "Fritz's" many friends hereabout wise him the best of luck.
H. W. Chynoweth was in town Friday from Pasadena, where he organizing the new Bank of Commerce with a capital stock of $50,000. Mr. Chynoweth has been elected president of the new organization, and has been delegated authority to purchase the furniture and fixtures, which will cost

Children playing with matches resulted in firing a barn belonging to Manuel Crespin, situated in the alley running north from the city powerhouse on Wednesday afternoon of last week. Its proximity to the water and lighting plant, where a large quantity of oil is kept in underground storage, called out the fire department on the double quick. A stream from the fire hose extinguished the fire in short order. The barn was about half destroyed, together with a quantity of hay stored therein.
Miss Idella Dotter was successful in the suit brought by her two married sisters to break their mother's will in which the family estate was bequeath-ed to the unmarried daughter. The estate consists of property in Los Angeles and Santa Monica valued at $100,-000. Miss Idella was given the entire property, her two sisters being cut off with $100 each. The lady is quite well known in Anaheim, having been a frequent visitor here in past years, and her success in the lawsuit is accepted with approval on the part of her many friends here.
Twelve bachelors of this city, all young and comparatively good-looking, have formed a compact, affixing their signatures thereto, agreeing to give a wedding present to the one who first claims a bride, the same to apply to the rest as they join the ranks of the Benedicts. The object of the gift is to promote matrimonial ventures and already there is a stir among the "boys" to see who can come under the wire first. The members have had a grouped picture taken, and only the modesty of some members prevents the names being going into the butcher business.

The bank will open in the new chamber of commerce building which is as yet incomplete, and will be ready for business about Sept. 1st. He and his mother this week moved to Pasadena and will take up their permanent residence in that city.
Herman Kruger was in town from Los Alamitos a day or two ago and says farming operations are in a flourishing condition in his neighborhood. All of his neighbors have sold their farms; the last two transfers having been recorded the past week. All sold at advenanced rates, and prices maintain an upward tendency. Mr. Kruger is the only property-owner within a radius of many miles who has resided in this section for any length of time. He had many offers for his farm but had not yet been persuaded to part with his property.
Attention is directed to the advertisement of Thos. W. Dunn, who is taking contracts for tree planting on all kinds, making the planting of orange trees a specialty. He is now engaged with a force of men setting out a large tract near Norwalk to eucalyptus trees which are doing nicely. Mr. Dunn understands the planting of trees thoroughly and all work entrusted to him will be given prompt attention. He guarantees satisfaction in every case and people desiring to set out orchards will do well to communicate with him.
The championship debate between Anaheim and Pasadena high schools will be held tomorrow evening at the Los Angeles polytechnic school. The subject is: "Resolved, That the Child Labor Law Should Emanate From the National Rather than State Government." Anaheim takes the affirmative and will be represented by Firebaugh and Smale. Anaheim has won each of its three debates this year. It occupies first place, with Pasadena second. Anaheim defeated Pasadena in the initial debate. A large delegation of rooters will accompany the team, going up on the 5:24 Santa Fe and returning on the midnight flyer.
The judges are Prof. Bovard of U. S. C., Prof. Millspaugh of the State Normal and Judge Wilbur of Los Angeles.

The Fullerton trustees are advertising a second gas franchise, which will be bid off July 1st. The trustees so weeks ago awarded a franchise to Fullerton gas company, which is laying pipe and will be ready for service probably by the first of June. Will be supplied from the works of company operating in this city, the connecting pipeline is now being laid. A rival company has recently entered the field, which, it is said, will not be ready to deliver gas for several months. A franchise was applied and this is now in course of publication.
