Gasoline Tank Explodes
An explosion of a small gasoline tank in McCollum's bicycle repair shop at noon on Monday, followed immediately by the sound of falling glass, caused a bit of excitement among passers-by and neighbors who ran hurriedly about the scene of the accident.
A. L. Smith was severely but not seriously injured by the explosion, being burned about the face and head. His eye was hurt by flying pieces of solder, but no permanent injury resulted. He was immediately taken to Dr. Johnston's office where his injuries were dressed.
Smith was knocked against a lathe by the force of the explosion, but recovered immediately and extinguished a blaze which enveloped the bench at which he was working. His prompt action saved the building from a bad fire.
He was engaged in repairing a fifteen-gallon gasoline tank used in automobiles at the time of the accident. He had soldered the tank, when he found by shaking it that a piece of solder had fallen inside. Fearing that it might at some time in the future fall into and plug up the orifice, he cut a hole in the tank and extracted the pellet.
On resoldering the opening he again found another piece of solder had fallen

On resoldering the opening he again found another piece of solder had fallen inside. While engaged in unsoldering a seam in the tank the explosion occurred.
The tank had been emptied of its contents an hour before, and contained no gasoline at the time of the explosion.
Glass in the window at the side of the work bench was shattered, as was also glass in the front window fifty feet away.
The gasoline tank was knocked into a cocked hat.

ROADSTERS AT FULLERTON
Meeting Votes Approving Big Bond Issue for Good Roads—Mr. Starbuck Wants to Know
A largely attended meeting of good-roads enthusiasts was held at Fullerton on Tuesday evening, delegations being present from Santa Ana, Anaheim and other portions of the county. The assemblage was one of a series of meetings held in various parts of the county for the purpose of educating the people upon the subject of good roads.
W. W. Kerr presided, and at 8:30 the discussion was opened by Clyde Bishop who explained the provisions of the law under which bonds are sought to be issued. He was asked various questions regarding the measure, all of which were answered with neatness and despatch. Bishop has recited his piece so often he knows it by heart. None of the money raised by the bond issue can be expended upon roads within incorporated towns, and it takes a two-thirds vote to carry them. who explained the provisions of the law under which bonds are sought to be issued. He was asked various questions regarding the measure, all of which were answered with neatness and despatch. Bishop has recited his piece so often he knows it by heart. None of the money raised by the bond issue can be expended upon roads within incorporated towns, and it takes a two-thirds vote to carry them. Bishop said the law limited a county to five per cent in levying assessments for road purposes such as was here contemplated. The equalized assessment valuation of the county was, in round numbers, $17,000,000. One million dollars could not be raised, as had been suggested by some. A half million dollars, or thereabout, was in his opinion the proper amount to be raised.
Col. Finley offered several suggestions in favor of good roads, going over much the same ground as in his address before the meeting in this city two weeks ago. He said he had mapped out 86 miles of roadway, which could be improved at a cost of $6000 per mile. These roads would, with care and proper handling, last 100 years. The paved roadway would be 16 feet wide. These 86 miles of roads would join all the principal cities and towns in the county. A man paying taxes upon $1000 of assessed valuation would contribute the first year only $2.30 in taxes on account of the bonds. Being later asked to point out just about where these 86 miles of roadway were, Col. Finley explained his map was not official and he disliked to anticipate the report of the commission later to be appointed. He said that 12 miles of the Camino Real lying south of San Juan had been cut out of the estimates. There would be, he said, one permanently improved highway leading through the county (the Camino Real) and 90 per cent of the entire population of the county would live within a mile of this main highway. Owners of property adjoining the 16 foot highway could donate funds to the county for widening the road in front of their premises.
Finley said that while the assessed valuation of the county was $17,000,000 at present, he believed that if this bond issue were voted the assessed valuation would in a few years advance to $50,-000,000.
Rev. Wotten of Santa Ana sang the praises of good roads in a half hour's

Rev. Wotten of Santa Ana sang the praises of good roads in a half hour's address, in which he contended that because every man in the county could not have paved roads in front of his property, that was no reason why a start in good-road building should not be made. He had traveled over roads in the old country which were built 2000 years ago, and were just as serviceable today as the day they were made. Orange county, he said, had the worst roads in the state, whereas, being the best county, it should naturally follow it should have the best roads. Automobile tourists going from Los Angeles to San Diego go by the more roundabout way of Riverside, because our roads are so bad they would frighten a four-cylinder runabout.
C. C. Chapman being called upon spoke in favor of good roads. He said people in the country especially favored the law because while the towns paid a large part of the taxes for the bonds, they get no appropriation for their streets. He referred to the need of good roads, and promised a unanim-
