WASHINGTON CHAT [CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE] Washington, D.C., April 21. According to the extensive plans of the navy department, now being rushed forward, the strength of the United States navy will be doubled within the next three years. The number of battleships will have been augmented within that time from twelve to twenty-seven in number, with a still greater increase in strength. This does not include the two battleships that are now being designed with the intention that they be made larger than any fighting ship afloat. The battleship section of the navy has been increased nearly 75 per cent in strength and exactly 50 per cent in numbers since July 1 last up to the present time, six new battleships having been added to the fleet in that period. Three more will be added within the next two months—the Kansas, Minnesota and Vermont, in time to participate in the Jamestown exposition, and three more—the South Carolina, Michigan and Nebraska, within the next two years. The New Hampshire, Idaho and Mississippi will be completed shortly afterward, and then will come the two monsters which are hoped by the navy department to prove a surprise to the fighting world. According to the present plans of navy officials, the first line of sea defense of the United States will be made up of twenty-five battleships by the close of the next fiscal year. shortly afterward, and then will come the two monsters which are hoped by the navy department to prove a surprise to the fighting world. According to the present plans of navy officials, the first line of sea defense of the United States will be made up of twenty-five battleships by the close of the next fiscal year. Whether the possibility of war with Japan or any other country within the next few years is responsible is not known, but certain it is that word has gone from the White House that work must be rushed with all possible speed on all ships under construction, especially those of the larger types, with the view of having each completed at the earliest possible date. THE NEWEST FLAG. A new flag is soon to take its allotted place among the flags of the nations of the world. It will have the distinction of being the first emblem of its significance that has ever been unfurled from the top of a flagstaff. The new flag will fly from the flag-pole of the prospective International Bureau of Republics, and with its yellow, green, red, white and blue and twenty-one stars, will proclaim to the world the spirit of unity that exists between the republics of North, Central and South America. The special committee having the designing of the flag in hand has decided to embody in it the green of the Mexican and Brazilian flags, the yellow of Spain, Ecuador and Venezuela, and the red, white and blue of the other republican flags. This will be done in such a way that the colors will blend. The stars will be placed against a suitable field and will represent the twenty-one republics of which the International OLD PEOPLE OLD PEOPLE NEED VINOL Because it contains the very elements needed to rebuild wasting tissues and replace feebleness with strength. Upon his return from that hunting trip the president wrote a series of magazine articles on hunting big game in the West, and “Skip” was frequently mentioned in words of praise, his tree-climbing abilities were spoken of and his fighting qualities were lauded. “Skip” is the friend of everybody about the White House and it was indeed welcome news to learn that the dumb animal would soon be able to get about and be as frisky as ever. Dennis Kearney Dead Dennis Kearney, the famous Sandlot orator, died at his home in Alameda on Wednesday of an illness of several months duration. Kearney was in poor health at the time of the fire in San Francisco. He was burned out of house and home and took up his residence in Alameda. After the fire he failed rapidly. Several months ago he lost his sight. Kearney rose to fame on the cry “The Chinese must go,” and his last public utterance was in connection with the Japanese question. From his sick bed he sent out word to his old time followers that the Japanese were a greater menace than the Chinese had been. He was one of the most pictureesque figures in California’s history and his Sandlot agitation in the seventies gained him national fame. He gathered an immense following in San Francisco and for a long time several hundred members of the Society of the Potomac, which will hold its annual encampment in Washington at that time, in order to attend the present at the ceremony. The president has taken a keen interest in this addition to the many statues of the nation's heroes in Washington and he will make hast to return to the exercises at the opening of Jamestown exposition in order to present at the ceremony. THE PRESIDENT'S DOG. Y and gladness again reigning the children of the White House, and among the grown folks for "Skip," the pet dog of the residential family is on the high to recovery after suffering with attack of pneumonia. "Skip" is famous tree-climbing dog predeed to the president during his last big game in Colorado a few years ago. The president, attended by the grit and excellent ties of the dog during the well-membered hunt, became warmly welcomed to him and brought him into state to the White House. He was turned over to young niece and has ever since been the secular playmate of the youth. A day that Archie is able to play at the grounds, "Skip" may be enjoying the sport, and woe be the stray dog that ventures to within the sacred inclosure of White House grounds while with the Japanese question. From his sick bed he sent out word to his old time followers that the Japanese were a greater menace than the Chinese had been. He was one of the most picturesque figures in California's history and his Sandlot agitation in the seventies gained him national fame. He gathered an immense following in San Francisco and for a long time dominated the political affairs of the city. As his influence grew he became a power in state politics and was the commanding figure at the constitutional convention in the late seventies. In the stirring days of the Kearney regime remarkable scenes were enacted on the streets of San Francisco. At one time when he turned apparent defeat to overwhelming victory he was placed in a wagon and 20,000 men drew him in triumph through the streets of the city. He is survived by three daughters and two sons. Nasal Catarrh quickly yields to treatment by Ely's Cream Balm, which is agreeably aromatic.
