Fiftieth Anniversary A meeting of the chamber of commerce and merchants' association was held in the banquet-room of Odd Fellows hall on Monday evening for the purpose of determining upon the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Anaheim, and to set in motion plans for a proper celebration of that historical event. The assemblage resolved itself into a citizens meeting, and Henry M. Adams was selected chairman. F. C. Spencer acted as secretary. The question whether to hold the celebration upon the Fourth of July or some time in September was freely discussed, and a vote taken showed the meeting to be largely in favor of the latter date. The subject was discussed by J. F. Walker, C. F. Grim, Judge Howard, Fred Ahlborn, Herman Stern, Herman Dickel, Capt. Williams, Fritz Yungbluth, F. C. Spencer, W. Falkenstein, B. V. Beebe, and others. Upon a vote it was decided to fix the date September 9th (Admission day.) While the actual date of the founding of the city was September 25th, yet the state's holiday was selected as being probably the more appropriate date. To those who might be tempted to cleave closer to dates and the memories clustering around them, it might Sites for Water Office Members of the water board escorted about town on Saturday noon by citizens desirous of off them a free site for the erection on of a two-story brick headquarter office. A number of sites were opened and the advantages expatiated by their several adherents, as follows: Lot 30x180 on Center street, H. Schindler's shoeshop now sited. The lot is owned by Henry Krueger and is valued at $100 a front foot. Lot 40x135 on East Center near Philadelphia, owned by R. S. value, $1800. Lot 50x120 feet on East Center, by L. A. Evans, east of Nemetz's shop; $1500. Lot 30x130 at corner of Emilie Center, owned by L. Nemetz; $3000. Lot 30x130 on Center street, Heying's restaurant, owned by Hart; value $3000. The board heard arguments regarding definite selection at its next meeting be held April 6th. While nothing authentic came learned relative to the selection rumored that the contest lies between Hart, Kroeger and Nemetz. Citizens obligate themselves to sent the water company a deed lot selected, without cost. Upon a vote it was decided to fix the date September 9th (Admission day.) While the actual date of the founding of the city was September 25th, yet the state's holiday was selected as being probably the more appropriate date. To those who might be tempted to cleave closer to dates and the memories clustering around them, it might be said that the association which founded this city was up for discussion on nearly every day in September fifty years ago. At all events it was decided to have a glorious celebration, and Chairman Adams was delegated authority to appoint an executive committee of three to have active control, with himself as presiding officer of the celebration. Mr. Adams announced he would appoint the committee later. The men would have to be hustlers and promise to take the matter up in earnest before he would think of appointing them. The meeting decided to ask co-operation of the ladies, and the fair sex will have a prominent part in the festivities. The program has not as yet been officially mapped out, although it will probably not materially differ from that recently appearing in these columns as a suggestion from the chamber of commerce. The Seventh regiment is expected to be here during the day. It was stated at the meeting that $5000 would be raised for the celebration. The meeting adjourned to the call of the chairman. A substanBeneficial Insects E. K. Karnes, deputy state horticultural commissioner, arrived here yesterday from Chula Vista, San Diego county, bringing with him colonies of parasites for red and purple scale. These parasites were procured in China last year by George Compere, and will be later on liberated in this county. Ellwood Cooper, state commissioner of horticulture, in his recently issued report, speaks of these insects as follows: "The last Legislature made an appropriation of $12,000 for the purpose of prosecuting the search for beneficial insects. With this appropriation we have continued to work, keeping our agent, Mr. George Compere, in the field, and very many new and beneficial species have been introduced into our State. We have been very much hampered in this work, however, by the wording of the act, and the construction placed upon it by the Attorney-General, as it states explicitly that the appropriation shall be for the purpose of searching for beneficial insects, although we have required facilities for breeding, propagating and distributing them after they have been received. Under the ruling of the Attorney-General we have been unable to use any portion of the appropriation for these purposes, and Minutes of Water Board Anaheim, March 1 Regular meeting of the board rectors of the A. The introduction of the vedalia cardenallis, parasite for white scale, into the state fifteen years ago, undoubtedly saved orange orchards from annihilation at the hands of this, at that time, most dreaded of all scale pests. Indeed, orange trees infested with this scale were ordered chopped down and destroyed in various parts of Southern California, to prevent the spread of the scale. The parasite was discovered by Mr. Coquillette, himself a former resident of this city. Immediately upon their liberation among the orchards they began attacking the white scale with such ferocity that in less than a year the pest was entirely destroyed. Now the white scale is no longer feared. Its natural enemy has conquered it, and it is confidently believed the newly imported friends of the orchardist will do the same by the red and purple scale. Mr. Karnes was met by Wm. Mc-Lauchlin, who has for some time past been engaged in an endeavor to have a state insectary established here. The beneficial insects are lodged in a number of boxes and are now in course of incubation. As soon as colonies are ready for liberation they will be liberated among infested trees. Mr. Karnes will probably remain here a week or ten days to superintend the introduction of the parasites. He is accompanied by his wife and Frederick Maskew. Yesterday afternoon was spent in looking for a location for the parasites, which include the entire insectary hitherto maintained at Chula Vista. F. A. High School Athletics Orange high school defeated Santa Ana at basket-ball on the local grounds on Saturday afternoon by the one-sided score of 14 to 7. The Orange girls seemed to have the edge on their Santa Ana sisters from the start, and having the advantage of position scored 10 to 3 in the first half. With a change of positions in the second half the Santa Ana girls, larger of stature than the Orange players, seemed to infuse more ginger into the game, with a determination to recoup their losses. Santa Ana scored three times in the second before Orange showed her colors, and it seemed as if a change in the fortunes of the game was at hand. Orange recovered her form at the kick of the second half, and by clever playing scored two points by dint of heroic playing. The game now grew furious, and in suppressed excitement the players called to each other, directing the play. Santa Ana scored again, and the county-seat contingent set up an uproar of auto blasts. Orange came back with another point, and the jangling cowbells and tooting fishhorns attested the fact that the crowd was evidently with the latter. By herculean playing Orange scored twice against Santa Ana before the game's end, the score for the second half standing 4 to 4. to investigate and report as would be preferable, a pipe open cement ditch along the of Mrs. Langenberger's prop- on was received from about stockholders asking that a Home installed for each of the three and for the superintendent. The result was greeted with an outburst of high school yells, cheers, cow-bell tintinnabulation and fishhorn obligato. A bevy of rosy-cheeked Orange girls in the grandstand, wearing orange and white colors, sang school songs to give vent to the joy which filled them. Prof. Brunton of F. U. H. S. was time keeper, and Hollis Knowlton filled the difficult position of referee without being mobbed by the ladies. Milbird Wray was umpire. By winning, the Orange high school team is admitted to play in the Southern California high school league. In the morning at Santa Ana Huntington Beach failed to appear, and the game was defaulted to the former. Anaheim and Fullerton high schools tried conclusions at baseball after the game. The locals were out of practice. Score: Fullerton, 7; Anaheim, 3. Ed Stewart has been confined to his home several days with an attack of grippe.
