Demented Man, Spurious Checks L. K. Marshall on Friday cashed a check drawn by John W. Williams upon the Bank of Southern California of Los Angeles in the amount of $20. The check was presented by H. E. Guthrie of Buena Park and endorsed by him. It was offered in payment for an indebtedness of $10 remaining on the sale of a cow to him by Mr. Marshall some months ago. Ten dollars in cash was handed over and the paper was deposited with the German-American bank. On Monday it was returned marked "No funds." Mr. Marshall endeavored to reach Guthrie by phone. He was answered by Mrs. Guthrie who said her husband was away from home, and his whereabouts were unknown to her. She added that in her opinion her husband must have been mentally unbalanced when he presented the check. She later made good the amounts. B. V. Beebe accepted a similar check the same day, drawn on the same bank in the amount of $75. The check was drawn by Williams and endorsed by Guthrie. Mr. Beebe paid Guthrie $25, and accepted the balance in payment of an account owing by Guthrie. On Tuesday morning the check was returned. After that, until the close of the eleventh, when he had to stop to catch his train for home, he never again appeared to be dangerous, and wasn't such a bad man after all. Mr. Goodman lent his kind assistance in the Oil Wells' efforts to win the game, contributing three errors, but the locals left their batting eyes at home, and two solitary bingles were not enough to put Herr Hoegee away. Johnson's pitching was the star feature of the game; a record of seventeen strikeouts ought to be good enough for anybody. Meats accorded him perfect support, accepting nineteen chances without an error. Head was out of the game, and was replaced by Alfred at second base. Harkness fanned ten, and allowing only two hits showed us that he had the goods. The man behind him played snappy ball, Snodgrass, his catcher, backing him up in fine style. In the first Johnson hit Goodman in the elbow, which came near retiring the foreigner from the game. Johnson used a swift incurve, and passed them up the alley with whiskers on both sides. McCann singled. Isbell could not handle a bad throw, and Snodgrass filled the bags. Johnson used a swift incurve, and passed them up the alley with whiskers on both sides. McCann singled. Isbell could not handle a bad throw, and Snodgrass filled the bags. Three men on bases, none out, and it looked like Mr. Hoegee come to town. Adams sent up a high foul, which Meats caught by running to the edge of the crowd. Gamble took first on a fielder's choice. Meats retired Goodman at the plate. Summerville struck out. Johnson pitched his nine out of what looked like an exceedingly tight place, during which Mr. Hoegee was in the very act of preparing to place it impartially all over us. The foothill savages could not locate Harkness with an ellisor's search-warrant until the sixth, when Johnson ripped off a single. He worked his way around to third, which was as far as he got. In the eleventh Meats tore off another, but weak hitting on the part of his associates left him at second for the count. Elwell's three consecutive assists to Isbell in the eighth were features of the game, as was running catches by Warren Meats and Summerville. Umpire Borchard of Orange gave entire satisfaction to both sides and it is to be hoped will be seen on the local diamond again. He is an old-time eastern ball player, and as a Hoegee player observed on leaving the grounds, "He's a good one." Pitcher Johnson, Catcher Meats and Firstbaseman Isbell depart next month for Montana, where they will play ball in the Northwestern league. They are clever and gentlemanly ball-players, and take with them the best wishes of all patrons of the game in the Southern California league. The capital Sites For Water Office The committee appointed by the water board to receive offers of a site for a new headquarters office in this city, met Friday and had four sites submited for their consideration. A fifty-foot lot on Center street east of Emily, a twenty-four foot lot on Center, west of Mr. Dickel's store, a lot of similar width on Lemon street near the postoffice, and a fifty-foot on North Los Angeles street, near the old Odd Fellows building. The committee decided to refer all offers to the board which will meet on Saturday to further consider the offers. Both Mr. Hale and Mr. McLauchlin stated that while the offers showed a commendable spirit on the part of our citizens, yet the committee preferred a more central location. They suggested that the supporters of each of the lots offered combine, placing a certain percentage of their donations in money, the committee then to select a more central site. If the money offered should not be sufficient to effect a purchase, then the chamber of commerce to take up the task of soliciting contributions to a fund to make up the required amount. Mr. Hale said that Jake Stern offered to build the company a brick building and donate it to the company if the office were moved to Fullerton. Mr. Hale added that further time would be given the people of this city to secure the available lot, that when such was secured the company would immediately begin the erection of a twostory brick building here.
