TOWN'S FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY
$4000 to Be Raised to Commemorate Notable Event—All the State to be Invited
The fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Anaheim will be celebrated this year by the citizens in a manner entirely worthy of the happy occasion. Fifty years ago this fall the town was laid out, and the pioneers shortly thereafter set sail from San Francisco for their new homes in the south. The original town was composed of fifty twenty-acre lots, and these were apportioned to the shareholders. Of the fifty pioneers only three remain, namely J. P. Zeyn, Theodore E. Schmidt and Mrs. C. Langenberger. There resides in Oakland C. F. Scholl, who will be invited to attend the celebration.
Anaheim was founded September 25, 1857. Whether to have the celebration on the Fourth of July or to wait until Admission Day (Sept. 9th) has not as yet been decided. Each day has its supporters and a decision will probably be arrived at in the near future.

STANTON BILL WITHDRAWN
Orange County Men Put Up Too Vigorous a Fight, and Stanton Meets Defeat
Information received from Sacramento yesterday was to the effect that the Stanton bill was withdrawn in face of an active and well-organized opposition and is probably dead for the session.
Phil Stanton's bill providing for slicing a part of Orange county and annexing it to Los Angeles was reported out of committee in both houses of the legislature at Sacramento Thursday. The bill was reported without recommendation, the vote being 4 to 4 in the assembly, one member of the committee being absent. Immediately upon receipt of this intelligence Santa Ana got busy, and determined to send a committee to the state capital and oppose the bill.
Information of this whirl of the political wheel was received at Santa Ana by a telegram from N. A. Ulm, who was in Sacramento in the interests of the merchants' mutual insurance county has not paid out the improvement of roads in section, although the latter 17 per cent. of the total tax sides most of the property Los Angeles people, and is the Los Angeles rather than Senator Anderson of Oran there was any grounds for the He said 75 per cent. of the strip were against the project. This latter statement was Senator Carter, who said owned $20,000 worth of property strip.

Information of this whirl of the political wheel was received at Santa Ana by a telegram from N. A. Ulm,
who was in Sacramento in the interests of the merchants' mutual insurance bill. The telegram reads as follows:
"Stanton bill under consideration by assembly committee. Newland and Price were there. Committee stood 4 to 4, one absent. Adjourned to meet again.
N. A. ULM."
Newland and Price of Huntington Beach had a conference with Stanton when he was in this end of the state and as a result they went to Sacramento to lobby for Stanton's bill.
The following telegram was sent Ulm after a conference with a number of committeemen at Santa Ana:
"Confer with Anderson and Bishop. Committee will render you all necessary aid. Price not on assessment roll.
BEATTY."
A committee consisting of R. Y. Williams, S. H. Finley, H. J. Forgy, Jas. McFadden of Santa Ana, and Richard Melrose of this city was sent to Sacramento.
Attorney Melrose, who went to Sacramento last week as a representative of the board of trustees of the State normal school of Los Angeles, to advocate legislation in which the school is vitally interested, in a letter to a friend says:
"I found when I came here that Assemblyman Bishop had telegraphed to me to come here on the county division matter. I had supposed that the matter was moribund, and was surprised to learn that it was very much alive. I have successfully accomplished my mission in the matter of the normal school; but I deem it advisable to remain here for a time to do what I can to defeat the Stanton bill for the curtailing of the boundaries of Orange county. R. Y. Williams and Supervisor Angle are also here for that purpose, and the gun clubs and Huntington Beach are also represented by an active lobby. Bishop has the fight well in hand, and I believe he will win out in the assembly. The senate how-

Bishop has the fight well in hand, and I believe he will win out in the assembly. The senate however is not in as good shape, and the result there is somewhat problematic."
Senator Carter of Los Angeles, Stanton's business associate and partner, led the fight for the passage of the bill in the senate on Tuesday, when a vote was to have been taken. He painted a black picture of the supervisors of Orange county raking in the taxes from Huntington Beach, and the other shore towns; and spending all of it on the roads at the other side of the county; he told of the people of the wave-lapped region crying out against taxation without representation; of the lack of "consanguinity" between the beach people and those of the celery fields and walnut groves.
Carter said that owners of 16,000 of the 20,000 acres proposed for annexation had petitioned for the passage of the bill; that 225 of the 300 registered voters of the territory wanted the county boundary changed.
"In five years," he said, "Orange

Suit Against Mrs. Mitchell
The German-American bank has filed suit against Mrs. N. H. Mitchell of Pasadena to enforce compliance with provisions of a contract entered into by her for the sale of property wherein the bank is situated on Center street. The bank purchased the lot from Mrs. Mitchell upward of a year ago and erected its building. The contract provides that the bank should pay her $50 per month rent until January 1st of this year, when a deed was to be made to the bank and the money for the lot turned over to her. The bank has filled all conditions of its contract, and some time ago notified Mrs. Mitchell the money was ready to be paid to her and requesting that she come forward with the deed. It is alleged in the complaint that Mrs. Mitchell refused to deliver the deed, and now asks that rent continue to be paid her for a period of ten years. This the bank refuses to do, and now brings suit to compel her to abide by the written terms of the contract.
The Odd Fellows some months ago brought suit against Mrs. Mitchell to collect $600 as her share of the cost of a party wall. The Odd Fellows building association have an agreement in writing with her by which she agreed to pay half the cost of the wall.

Miss Carrie E. Roberts, formerly principal of the Anaheim grammar school, but during the past year resting at her bungalow at Sunset Beach, has been appointed deputy county school superintendent by Superintendent Carpenter. Miss Roberts will be in charge of the office at the courthouse during Prof. Carpenter’s visits to the schools of the county. One of the foremost educators in the state, as she is also one of the best liked teachers ever employed in the county, she is qualified in an eminent degree to fill the arduous duties of her office, and will without doubt render an excellent account of her stewardship. Her many friends hereabout rejoice at her good fortune, as well as Prof. Carpenter’s good fortune in securing so able an assistant.
The Puente Oil company is said to have received a cash offer of one million dollars for its oil wells and holdings north of Fullerton. The company is pumping thirty wells and has 4000 acres of oil bearing land. Many expert oil men believe that the company's property is worth more than a million. The Puente is a closed corporation, being owned outright by five or six stockholders.
