POWER HOUSE COSTS $9850
Specifications Call for $4500
Building—Plans Will Be
Changed—Bid Rejected
Only one bid was received for erecting the proposed new power house by the city trustees on Tuesday evening, and that was rejected as being twice the amount the city proposed to expend upon the building. The bid was submitted by C. Schindler & Son and was in the amount of $9850, while the specifications call for a structure costing $4500.
Mr. Schenck, who was present at the meeting, said the architect's plans had been examined by Los Angeles contractors who had expressed the opinion the building could be erected for $4500 or $4800.
The board rejected the bid and determined to alter the plans.
Herman Schindler discussed informally with the board various features of the structure which could with profit be changed. He said there was no need for a crushed-rock foundation, as excellent gravel could be used.
10 and 12 inch water pipe, to be from the tank to the corner of C and Los Angeles streets. The bid from the United States Cast Iron Foundry company, and was as for pipe, according to specific $53 75 per ton; for fittings, $83 ton.
These figures were considered but were understood to be rates and the bid was accepted.
The board adjourned to meet on Tuesday evening next, the when changed plans for the house will be submitted and furnished electrical supplies accept.
The board meets in regular session this evening.

A new thirty-horse power boiler being installed and other machines
been examined by Los Angeles contractors who had expressed the opinion the building could be erected for $4500 or $4800.
The board rejected the bid and determined to alter the plans.
Herman Schindler discussed informally with the board various features of the structure which could with profit be changed. He said there was no need for a crushed-rock foundation, as excellent gravel could be had here. This will materially cheapen the cost of the building. Other changes were indicated and will probably be adopted.
Schenck was instructed to make such changes in the house as will bring it within the contemplated cost. The altered plan will be submitted to the board at a meeting to be held on Tuesday evening next.
Six bids were opened for furnishing arc lights and electrical apparatus, as follows:
Pacific Electric Works—For furnishing 40 arcs, with switchboard, transformers, and all appurtenant apparatus. $1510.
Westinghouse Electrical Manufacturing Co., $1533 58; second bid, on improved apparatus, $1715 52.
General Electric Company—$1501 08 fob. Los Angeles; $1512 50 fob. Anaheim.
California Electric company—$1508.
B. F. Karluff company—$1501 08.
Standard Electric company—$1661.

The bids were referred to Engineer Lewis for inspection and report at next Tuesday evening's meeting.

Dissatisfaction on the part of officers of the laundry company minated on Monday in the withdrawn of J. T. Shea as manager. He succeeded by Mr. Kleifer of Los Angeles, who comes recommended as one of the best laundrymen in that city.
A new thirty-horse power boiler being installed and other machinery will be placed in position within a days.
Inferior work and unbusiness management is said to have caused Shea's downfall. It is only fair state that illness in his family, an attack of typhoid which kept him side several weeks, probably assists in bringing about the demand for resignation.
Yesterday it was stated that S had forgotten to liquidate sundry counts in town, and that attachments proceedings against him had been instituted by one creditor.
Shea has had the Santa Ana lau do much of his work of late. This is said, he failed to pay for.
The new management announce will be able to resume business in a days Meanwhile all laundry offices being sent to Los Angeles.

LIKE AN ONCOMING WAVE IS SENTIMENT FOR DIVISION
Strong Undercurrent Favorable to Returning to the Fold of Los Angeles County
Senator Anderson and Assemblyman Bishop telegraphed from Sacramento on Wednesday last just after the noon recess that Stanton’s county-division bill was dead, and that it was quite unnecessary for a committee of Orange county citizens to go to Sacramento to fight the bill.
Inside of forty-eight hours thereafter it was learned authoritatively that, so far from being dead, the bill was very much alive, and that its author declares he will pass it. That Stanton is a man of considerable force at Sacramento might just as well be admitted, and his threat to carry the bill is a menace to this county which has caused its citizens to sit up and take notice.
Stanton came down from Sacramento on Thursday night’s Owl and Foxceptive mood, and small wonder pressed here and in Los Angeles this attitude.
A Startling Statement
That a strong undercurrent ment against Santa Ana is over the northern portion of the city since Stanton’s bill first light is undeniable. Said one wealthiest and most prominent in this section early in the week.
“I will tell you what I think county division matter on your not to reveal my identity at the time. I favor cutting loose from Ana and going back into Los county, and I will tell you why at this session of the legislature most certainly at the next. But than two years I have talked ter over quietly with my neighbor with prominent men in bush politics in Los Angeles, and I can be done. Why do I want to of Orange county? What has Ana ever done but to rob us as us since she organized this court?
“Why did she place the boundary line at Coyote creek of San Gabriel river, where been promised early in the would be placed? Simply to be heim out of votes in the struc county seat.”

Stanton came down from Sacramento on Thursday night's Owl, and on Friday held a conference with a delegationof Huntington Beach people in Los Angeles. He is said to have positivelydeclared to the beachers that if theywould stay with him he will pass the bill.
It is learned from Sacramento thatthe inception of Stanton's measurewas a vicious attack made by Assemblyman Bishop upon gun clubs duringconsideration of Estudillo's bill providing for capping flowing wells. While thegun clubs admitted the justice of theact, which provides for capping ofwells when not in use, they askedreasonable exemption from its operation inwells flowing into lakes maintainedup shooting preserves. This actedlike a red rag before a bull. Bishop launched into a characteristic tiradeagainst gun clubs in general, and thosein Orange county in particular, denouncing their members as bloatedbonholders, aristocratic millionaires, robbers and so on. A numberof these gun club men, who,so far from being measured by the SantaAna standard of inferiority, number among their ranks some of the most influential financiers and politicians inSouthern California, were present andbeard Bishop's attack. After listeningto Bishop's excoriation, they helda conference with Stanton and other LosAngeles members, and there and thenthe bill was agreed upon.

One of these gentlemen is quoted as saying that he will if necessary spend $5000 to take the coast strip into Los Angeles. The significance of this observation will be apparent to those who have attended a session of the California legislature.
It is given out on good authority that Newport Beach and Balboa on the south are anxious to cut loose from Orange county and that Los Alamitos on the west would not need much urging to bid us a fond goodbye.
Los Alamitos has a grievance in the manner in which she was forced into a union high school district, against her wishes, and solely to include the sugar factory for assessment purposes. While Santa Ana is not directly chargeable with this business, the claim is made that the supervisors should have heeded the protest to excluding Los Alamitos from the district in the beginning. The recent action of the grand jury in censuring the sugar factory, on the evidence of a discharged and envious employee, of a matter upon which it had already been completely exonerated, has also left the district in re-

"When the bill was before the legislature, providing that the experiment station should be located 'in the representative orange and walnut growing county of Southern California,' why did Senator Anderson change the clause to read 'one of the counties of Southern California?' I will tell you why. It was because the former meant Anaheim, while the latter meant River-side. Do you suppose Anderson did this upon his own responsibility? No, sir. He consulted with Santa Ana, and I am sure Jim McFadden, Johnny Beatty, Dr. Ball, Bill Spurgeon and that push knew all about it.

Drops Into Politics.
"It makes me smile to see Jim McFadden cleaving to Dick Melrose's neck and beseeching him to save the county from Stanton's rape. McFadden insisted that Melrose act as spokesman at the meeting of the Los Angeles merchants' and manufacturers' association, held last week. He also imparted him to go to Sacramento and address the legislature against Stanton's bill. This makes me smile. McFadden has been Melrose's political enemy ever since the county was formed. Did you ever hear of Santa Ana supporting an Anaheim man? What did they do to Walker last year? What did they do to Jennings? What did they do to Lewis in the convention? Slaughtered them all. McFadden defeated Melrose twice in the latter's aspirations for the state senatorship; but Melrose has not failed to take repeated falls out of McFadden in our county conventions. His two notable victories over McFadden were in taking the county delegation to the state convention for Henry T. Gage when McFadden was jumping stiff-legged and shouting himself red in the face against the Los Angelan. Melrose has been chairman of several county conventions, and appointed all the committees; while McFadden has striven his utmost to beat him. Indeed, I doubt if McFadden has controlled a county convention in Orange county in ten years.
"But McFadden defeated Melrose for the senate, the last time with Anderson. And what do you think of Anderson? What little influence he ever had at Sacramento was altogether nullified
