District Attorney Davis was in town on legal business on Saturday.
County School Superintendent Carpenter was in town from Santa Ana on Saturday.
A. O. Smith, a prominent business man of Buena Park, was in town on Saturday.
C. A. Mahoney has arrived from Portland, Or., and will take a position in the steam laundry.
Albert Heffner has purchased a meat market in Los Angeles and has moved to that pueblo to reside.
Fayette Lewis, Charles Schindler and Ernest Clabaugh have returned to Berkeley after spending Christmas vacation with relatives.
Ted Dickel returned to Berkeley on Saturday morning. He was tendered a farewell party by a number of friends the previous evening.
A. W. Danforth writes from Pasadena that last week's rain at that point amounted to 7½ inches, and for the season more than 17 inches.
Engineer Kellogg this week began sluicing operations upon the Yorba dam. Work is progressing favorably upon the structure and every indication is that it will prove a great success.

County Manager Babb of the telephone company was in conference on Monday with officials of the merchants' association regarding new telephone system now being ready for operation in this surrounding territory.

Rev. Father Dubbel and a delegation of members of the council of Knights of Columbus went to Los Angeles on Tuesday evening to attend a festival in honor of the fifth anniversary of the council's institution in that city. Bishop Conaty delivered an address; and the meeting was attended by Knights from many points in Southern California.
Miss Hulda Harris, sister of Mrs. Asher and Mrs. Falkenstein, returned on Monday to her home in San Bernardino after a pleasant visit over the Christmas holidays. Miss Harris and Mrs. Asher contemplate a visit to Germany in May, for the benefit of the latter's health, and will be absent three months.
Changes in officers and directors of the Kelso mining company were made at the company's office in Los Angeles on Saturday as follows: E. J. Bulgen resigned as a director and treasurer, and was succeeded by Dr. F. K. Strasser of San Jacinto. John R. Gardiner resigned as vice president and was elected treasurer. Dr. Strasser was elected vice president. John E. Nelson continues in office as president of the company, a position which he possesses peculiar fitness to fill.
Mr. Neff encountered a deluge of ten inches of rain in three days at Ventura last week, and as a consequence the farmers' institute scheduled there was not largely attended. On Wednesday, when he was due to start for Fillmore, where an institute was to have been held that evening, washouts on the railroad detained him and Mrs. Neff until Saturday. A Sacramento dispatch says that J. N. Anderson, was appointed Gov. Pardee to be a trusted Whittier state school, will now be furnished by the senate, and thatination will probably be withdrawn. Gov. Gillett. Anderson is to who has got more political crosses than any other man who ran for office before taking out citizenship papers.

Pipes leading from the reservoir supplying the town with water were washed out, and on Saturday the town was out of drinking water. Cooking was done with muddy rainwater. Much damage was done on the coast line north of Ventura. It was the severest storm prevailing in that region in many years.
Maurice Ray of Fullerton has purchased 1000 acres of the Yorba estate. The property transferred consists of lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the surveyor's division of the Yorba estate, deeded by Porfirio Yorba to Lordsburg, and lot 3, deeded by Francisca Yorba de Vejar of Pomona. A mortgage in amount $16,690 was filed in connection with the deal with Porfirio Yorba. The deed by Porfirio Yorba reserves 80.80 acres for the Yorba reservoir. The five lots deeded to Ray by Porfirio Yorba contain 448 acres, 440.8 acres, 38 acres, 59.06 acres and 393 acres respectively. Ray is a confidential employee of Jacob Stern, and the transfer presages the building of the Huntington electric railway by way of Yorba up River canyon to Riverside. Work on the line from Los Nietos through La Habra valley to Randolph is now in progress.

Mr. Forbes is mon with other intelligent citizens his section favors the construction of the Yorba reservoir, holding that it will be of inestimable all parts of the district. The reason being designed to supply the portions of the district, and the river flow may be diverted to this section. Thus will the happiness concerned be brought about, coffers of the company be ene many fold. Mr. Forbes, we salute and hope there are many more in your section of your same headedness.
A. S. Bradford was in town one day. He has been indisposed over for a week or so past, but valescing.

Annual inspection of Company E will occur on next Monday evening. The company is being put in readiness for the ceremony, and hopes to retain its high place as one of the most efficient companies in the brigade. Last year it stood third out of a total of twenty-six organizations in the brigade. The Salinas troop of cavalry, said to be one of the best mounted and most efficiently drilled military organization in the west, and Gen. Waukowski's former Los Angeles company, were the only two organizations ahead of it.
W. H. Spake was in Los Angeles this week and secured a promise from Frank Wiggins, secretary of the Los Angeles chamber, to be present at the annual banquet of the Anaheim chamber the evening of the 30th. Mr. Wiggins is probably the foremost man in Southern California in the work of upbuilding its resources, and his efforts in behalf of the Los Angeles chamber have brought him fame throughout the United States.
A. Nagel on Tuesday morning received the sad intelligence by telegraph of the death, at Monticella, Ind., the previous evening of his father, Stephen Nagel, in his seventieth year. The old gentleman visited his son and family two years ago and made many friends who will regret to learn of his demise. Mr. Nagel last heard from his old home two weeks ago, when all was well. He was at first disposed to leave immediately for Indiana to attend the funeral, but owing to numerous washouts and delayed trains was debarred the privilege of attending the burial.
John Hanna was in town from Mari-flores on Saturday. Mr. Hanna reports an abundant fall of rain in his section, and is of opinion his walnut orchard will need no irrigation this season. He believes in thorough cultivation, as usual.

W. S. Gibbs was in town from Orangethorpe on Tuesday. Mr. Gibbs owns 57 acres on the avenue and devotes his attention to alfalfa raising. He has his own pumping plant and lifts 80 inches of water. He will the coming season set a considerable portion to Valencia oranges. Mr. Gibbs has lived on his ranch since July. He formerly resided in New York.
