WORLD'S FAIRS Three world’s fairs for the Pacific Coast during the next decade seem rather more than we can reasonably hope to pull off with success, and before any great degree of headway can be made with either, at least one of the other, if not both of them, must be relegated to the rear. Los Angeles has the call upon the largest and most ambitious of these projects, and we doubt not will succeed in carrying it out to a successful consummation. That city purposes holding a world’s fair in 1915 to commemorate the completion of the Panama canal, and has applied itself to the task of raising $10,000,000 as an initial sum for inaugurating the enterprise. Congress will be asked to her a far greater blow April fire and eaarth seems to us the city has do in setting her house in fore taking on the respect of a great exposition. the city has had an exp the Midwinter fair of 19 would seem she should erous spirit toward Lo and gracefully step aside time. That city purposes holding a world’s fair in 1915 to commemorate the completion of the Panama canal, and has applied itself to the task of raising $10,000,000 as an initial sum for inaugurating the enterprise. Congress will be asked to appropriate similar amount, and Senator Flint will introduce a bill in the senate with this end in view at the coming session. Now comes San Francisco, rising from her bed of pains and hurts, and declares it is her intention to hold a world’s fair in 1913 to commemorate the discovery of the Pacific ocean four hundred years ago. It is said the claim for the discovery of this vast body of water has been preempted by a high-sounding “promotion committee” of the northern metropolis, and that Mr. Jennings, its secretary, has the papers to show for it. The San Francisco people have recently added the completion of the Panama canal to their stock in trade, and will commemorate not only the achievement of its promotion committee but that of the isthmian water way as well. They have within the week so assured us. Representative Kahn of San Francisco, it appears, introduced a bill in the last congress providing for holding this fair; but the bill was pigeon-holed, was never reported, did not pass, and it furnishes a very small peg indeed for that city to hang its hopes for a world’s fair upon. Moreover Kahn said nothing about the Panama canal, but now it seems the promotion committee has discovered that also. Seattle is also to the fore with a Yukon-Klondike affair which is Seattle’s fair should also out; but San Francisco has portunity of her lifetime in her appreciation of what Leses did for her when in the world’s fair in San Francisco is, under all these conditions. Let the Los Angeles fief with government approval. Citizens declare the project will greatest ever held on earth know her business men possessive brains, energy and carry it to successful complete FRAUDS IN THE LAND Again there is an ugly broken out in the general office. This time it involves ing and the Union Pacific railroad and it relates exclusively to gobbling of coal lands. In on the face of it as though it be one more added to the unsavory revelations that Se Hitchcock will have to invest before his term of office of The charge is made by a law Denver, A. J. Moreover Kahn said nothing about the Panama canal, but now it seems the promotion committee has discovered that also. Seattle is also to the fore with a Yukon-Klondike affair which is being blazoned to the four corners of the world as the biggest thing ever, and for which probably a generous slice of Uncle Sam’s treasure will be applied for. Of course these three world’s fairs cannot hope for any degree of success, and two of them should step aside. Let us consider San Francisco first. Can it in its present state of municipal scandal hope for a dollar of assistance from the general government? We hardly think so. What proof would the government have that Mr. Ruef would not annex the larger part of it? Mr. Ruef may be a very fine man, as the indited Mayor Schmitz acknowledges himself to believe, but we personally would not trust him out of sight when there exists a possibility of a large graft about. Again, will San Francisco be in position in six or seven years to invite the world to be her guest? No, nor in twenty-five years, with her present deplorable state of affairs retarding her progress and dealing notice to appear at the hearing order to substantiate his claim. He says on the contrary, that inspector who was charged with the first inquiry, Special Inspector Myendoff, was transferred as he had made his report and the only other hearing was a chamber” proceeding at which the officials of the Union Pacific and their witnesses were proclaimed that he was never even fied that the hearing was held. He charges further that on every day that he mailed to the office conclusive proofs of the road’s criminality, that patented the land in dispute were issued by the Union Pacific. His chief prima facia, is a very serious It will not occasion so much pride in view of the fact that many other charges of fraud been made and proved in connection with the land office administration in the past few years, but is such a charge as to call for investigation. The geological survey is now gaged in mapping all of the lands of the west and middle in order that the government follow the suggestion of President Roosevelt and withdraw the oil lands still remaining from public entry. It will be only one more case added to the weary round of fraud and duplicity that he has been called to uncover during his eight years' term of office. The start in this case will undoubtedly be made during Secretary Hitchcock's administration, and its conclusion in all probability will come in the term of Secretary Gar Is fair should also be cut San Francisco has the opportunity of her lifetime in showing association of what Los Angelor her when in need. A air in San Francisco in 1913 all these conditions, absurd. Los Angeles fair meet government approval. IN THE LAND OFFICE There is an ugly scandal in the general land offline time it involves Wyome Union Pacific railroad, rates exclusively to the of coal lands. It looks of it as though it would be added to the list of revelations that Secretary will have to investigate term of office expires. is made by a lawyer in J. Smith, and is to the more than three years into possession of facts that the Union Pacific is illegally gaining contions of dollars worth of real lands in Wyoming. In his statement that these facts to the attenand office and was ashey would be investihat he would be given appear at the hearing in postantiate his charges. the contrary, that the who was charged with quiry, Special Inspector has transferred as soon ade his report and that her hearing was a “star proceeding at which only take notice of them. It will be only one more case added to the weary round of fraud and duplicity that he has been called to uncover during his eight years’ term of office. The start in this case will undoubtedly be made during Secretary Hitchcock’s administration, and its conclusion in all probability will come in the term of Secretary Garfield, who, it is announced, will succeed Hitchcock in office. There is no question about Garfield’s honesty, and the case will make a good starter for his administration, during which it is hoped to clear the general land office from the frauds that have long been charged to it. It is only natural in years past that comparatively little attention should have been paid to land frauds, because the public domain was one of the largest and least considered assets of the general government. But the time has now come when the secretary of the interior will have to guard the public domain with never ceasing vigilance, and the prospect is that Mr. Garfield will have a busy time after he comes into office. It is announced that the department of justice is preparing to prosecute the glue trust. And there is little doubt that it will make it stick. Senator Depew says the report of his resignation is a joke. It always seemed Chauncy had queer ideas about what constituted real humor. HETTY GREEN admits that she don't know enough about politics to make contributions to a campaign fund. Now that the election returns are all in Dr. Wiley of the agricultural department might organize a squad to study the effects of a crow diet. The only thing that is worrying the stand-patters is to find another good reason for not revising the tariff. Comes Mr. Jennings of the "promotion committee" claiming credit for discovering the Pacific four hundred years ago. Pshaw! Ask Frank Wiggins about it, and we will wager a city lot he discovered it long before Jennings ever heard of California. What warrant will the government have, in making an appropriation for a world's fair in San Francisco in 1913, that all of her people will not be in state prison by that time?
