ANAHEIM boys put it all over Santa Ana in the debate on naval armament the other evening. They showed conclusively that the United States needs no colossal navy to insure peace. The signs of the times do not warrant such assumption, and the money can be spent to better advantage. Give us a large and effective navy, to be sure, such as we are now building, but not necessarily the "largest navy in the world." Our boys truthfully pointed out the fact that no foreign nation would ever dare attack us; first, on account of the obvious futility of such struggle, and secondly because of the overwhelming disadvantages of fighting so far removed from their base. Inasmuch as the United States is thus practically immune from of the supervisor district county, its excess vote that, in all probability, decreased in size before county election. The vote of the five districts was at First, 997; Second, 726; Third, 1428; Fourth, 884; Fifth These figures show the change in top-heavy, the result unbalanced representation corded voters in this district compared with other counties. Thus the Trust polls within 148 votes combined strength of the and Fifth districts. It has twice the vote of the Second trict. It polls 431 more votes than the First district, composed greater part of Santa Ana out of all proportion number to the other districts in the Third district formed included the precincts of Cayorba, which were eight ye sequestered into the Fourtrict, and now its great interest that probably early new year a new alignment tricts will be made, to the more equable distribution moneys may result. Prob lines of every district in this will be changed before election. Approximately age of something over 10 were cast in the five district an apportionment of that Our boys truthfully pointed out the fact that no foreign nation would ever dare attack us; first, on account of the obvious futility of such struggle, and secondly because of the overwhelming disadvantages of fighting so far removed from their base. Inasmuch as the United States is thus practically immune from attack, and as we are bent on no policy of seizure of foreign lands, we fail to see the propriety of the "biggest-navy-in-the-world" idea. During the Spanish war, when Cervera was ordered into Cuban waters, his doom was sealed before he left the Azores behind. Once in western waters, thousands of miles away from his base, without coal, his ships must necessarily prove a prey to the guns of the American seamen. Darting from Martinique across the Caribbean to Curosoa, and thence back-tracking to Santiago, it was only his jack-rabbit tactics that saved him from annihilation before he touched the point where his ships met destruction. And even had he escaped from that vice-like grip of death, his ability to inflict punishment upon us was at a minimum, and his ultimate destruction was as certain as could be. What inspired the order to the Spanish admiral will probably never be known, but it was probably the last despairing coup-de-theatre of a cause that was already hopelessly lost. Coal, it will be seen, is one of the essentials of naval warfare, no less than ships and guns. What happened to Cervera would inevitably befall any foreign fleet seeking to attack us in our home waters. Our boys proved themselves to be debaters of keen-witted intellectuality, yet the Santa Ana lads were not far behind, and handled new year a new alignment tricts will be made, to the more equable distribution moneys may result. Prob lines of every district in this will be changed before election. Approximately age of something over 10 were cast in the five district an apportionment of that of votes to each district would fit the case as it now itself. It will be seen that district is approximately cent too large at present cally. The First district right, but the others are small. Placentia objected ousely to being transferred Third to the Fourth district the lines were changed, largely increased vote tendicate that both Olinda and centia will at the next count vote in the latter district With 6800 registrations tors, Orange county polls 5416 votes for governor, off of 20 per cent. It is es that in this city and West heim upward of 100 voters to exercise the elective france the most of them being cans. The total vote cast state is not yet at hand, but will show a tremendous fall is undeniable. This decrease is probably mostly republic not entirely so. Few demol labor-unionists failed to vote for Bell or Langdon, and so and prohibitionists supported tickets loyally. A change 118,000 plurality for Roose 1904, to 12,000 for the rep ticket in this year of grace which way the wind blow should give leaders of the seen, is one of the essentials of naval warfare, no less than ships and guns. What happened to Cervera would inevitably befall any foreign fleet seeking to attack us in our home waters. Our boys proved themselves to be debaters of keen-witted intellectuality, yet the Santa Ana lads were not far behind, and handled the affirmative side of the argument thoroughly and well. Singularly enough, two circumstances going to afford us immunity from future naval attack were lost sight of. The building of the Panama canal will double the effectiveness of our navy, and the fact that we are in possession of the cables in the Pacific will place a foreign fleet at particular disadvantage in a fight with us in those waters. Riverside county polled a total of 4292 votes at the recent election out of a total registration of 5707. Orange county polled 5416 votes, out of a total registration of 6751. Orange county thus polled 1124 more votes than its big neighbor to the east, an excess of more than 26 per cent above the Riverside vote. The recent election demonstrated one interesting fact, and that is that the Third supervisor district polled by far the heaviest vote cast in any not entirely so. Few democrats labor unionists failed to vote for Bell or Langdon, and so prohibitionists supported tickets loyally. A change in 118,000 plurality for Roosevelt in 1904, to 12,000 for the republican ticket in this year of grace which way the wind blows should give leaders of the pause. There is a greater rebellion against machine in the state and nation at the ent time than ever before, and time is ripe for thinking now the party to devise means for themselves from this control is idle to deny that it exists. Already word is given our party "bosses" throughout that have passed the word along. Roosevelt is to be defeated hazards for renomination national convention of 1908 word, like the ripples caused pebble cast into the sea, goes panding in all directions, we seems to have ramified every let in the land. We fancy wishing the still small voice penetrate this very town. Whether name of the president shall bemitted to that convention or no one at present can say; but there is a universal demand one end of the land to the that he stand for renomination cannot be doubted. If it de supervisor districts in the county its excess vote indicating that all probability, it will be used in size before another election. The vote in each five districts was as follows: 1997; Second, 722; Third, Fourth, 884; Fifth, 834. Figures show the district to be heavy, the result being that faced representation is acutely voters in this district, as well with other citizens in county. Thus the Third district within 148 votes of the second strength of the Second fifth districts. It has nearly one vote of the Second district polls 431 more votes than the district, composed of the heart of Santa Ana, and is a total proportion numerically other districts in the county. The third district formerly included precincts of Olive and which were eight years ago moved into the Fourth district now its great increase is not probably early in the new alignment of district be made, to the end that equable distribution of road may result. Probably the very district in the county changed before another Approximately an aver- something over 1000 votes in the five districts, and tionment of that number that corrupt bosses shall be in control of the next national convention, and the will of the people in this regard defeated, the party will go down to its greatest political defeat, and the man does not live today who can see far enough into the future to discern victory at any angle of the political sky. We are in receipt of letters from republicans in various portions of the county, as well as personal assurances from republicans in different sections, fully according with the statements published in our last week's issue on the Results of the Election. Some of the letters received we should like very much to print, but are inhibited from so doing by the authors. It will suffice to say that all agree with us that there must be more unanimity of sentiment among republicans in this county if success is to be achieved in future elections. More honesty in our politics, and less dishonesty, is the keynote of success. Let us have no more forced conventions such as we have recently had. That a forced convention, to secure the nomination of one man, imperils the success of every man on the ticket, is the sentiment pervading republican circles from one end of the county to the other. Let us free the party of chronic place-seekers, get together Approximately an avermable distribution of road may result. Probably the very district in the county changed before another With Ruef, Schmitz and a bunch of San Francisco supervisors indicted for graft the beginning of the end of the corruption rampant in that stricken city seems at hand. Revelations that have come from the bay city two past fortnight relative to the extortions practiced by the city government upon all classes of citizens coming in official contact with it are astounding. The French restaurants, which are nothing more nor less than dens of infamy, have been bled to the tune of $40,000 by Ruef, while the United Railroads are said to have paid him $700,000 for an over-head trolley franchise. Spring Valley is said to have put up a bribe running into the millions to keep out of the city a competing water company. The thousands of gambling places, the resorts of the red-light district, Chinatown—all are prey to the extortionists. Legitimate business houses as well as illegitimate dens all are as fish to the municipality's net, and all have had to pay. Schmitz has been traveling in Europe, putting up at the most exclusive and most expensive hotels and going from place to place in princely splendor. He and Ruef and the rest of the gang may be wearing stripes before the new year. The history of San Francisco the past month—the brazen attempt of Ruef to supersede the legally elected district attorney, and to set at defiance the will of the people—reads more like a chapter from mediaeval history than an occurrence in this twentieth century era of progress. The boys at the wells went astray, and so did the faithful at Fullerton; but that a single vote was cast illegally, or that a fair count was not had, is to be doubted. Of course Mr. Rockefeller believes implicitly in providence. Does he not always advise the public to keep its lamp trimmed and burning?
