A flat-chested and emaciated report straggled into town this week from Buena Park to the effect that S. O. Walker, republican candidate for sheriff, would not carry his home precinct at the approaching election. It is believed a personal enemy, a man whom Mr. Walker has done many a favor for in past years, is at the bottom of these silly rumors. A lie travels faster than the truth, and as a solitary coyote, yelping at the moon, is sometimes mistaken for a numerous pack of the varmint, so this ill-conceived rumor has bobbed up in several places. There is of course no foundation for this story. Mr. Walker has the cordial support of his friends and neighbors. Republicans are staying with him to a man, while he will also receive many a democratic vote. He never The Weekly Gazette. There is of course no foundation for this story. Mr. Walker has the cordial support of his friends and neighbors. Republicans are staying with him to a man, while he will also receive many a democratic vote. He never did a man an injury in his life. Where he is known best, there he will run best. He will sweep Buena Park, as well as the entire third supervisor district. Walker will go to the Santiago bridge with 500 majority. Walker is pitted against the strongest man in the democratic party in Orange county—the man whom republicans have been able to defeat only once since the organization of the county. His opponent is striving for re-election to the office which he has held for sixteen years. Should he be re-elected he will have held the office, at the end of the ensuing term, for full twenty years. Republicans who know Walker will vote for him. To those who do not, we ask, will you support a man who has never asked for office, or will you vote for a man who has already held the office sixteen years and wants four years more of it? For honorable republicans there can be but one answer. Voters at the coming election will have two conflicting proposals in the form of constitutional amendments to contend with. By an oversight of the branches of the legislature the governor and lieutenant governor are at loggerheads as to their respective salaries. By an oversight of the branches of the legislature the governor and lieutenant governor are at loggerheads as to their respective salaries. Assembly Constitutional Amendment No. 12 proposes a substantial increase in salaries of all state officers except in the case of the lieutenant-governor, who is to receive the same remuneration allowed the members of the legislature as now. In this amendment the salary of the governor is fixed at $10,000 a year, an increase of $4000 annually. The senate constitutional amendment proposes to increase the salary of lieutenant-governor to $4000 a year, and while increasing the salary of other officials, leaves that of the governor at the previous amount, $6000. Is the coming to this county of Editor Baumgartner of the Long Beach Press to be construed as an indication that that thriving seaside town is to become a part of Orange county when Los Angeles consolidates? There exists quite a sentiment in the seaside city favoring this move, so we are informed. Stranger things have happened. DIFFICULTY IN CUBA. Reports to the contrary notwithstanding, it is safe to say that country is not going to actively move in Cuba unless it has to. Foreign press, especially that face, has ticketed the revocation of an annexation move. This is quite true, but the agent's move in sending Secret-Taft and Balcom to investigate facts on the spot has unnaturally made for Cuban peace at the need of annexation by country. It seems that Presidialma and those associated with him have been doing the usurping in making the job of government pay a good deal more officially announced salient. The refusal of County Clerk Pfeiffer of San Bernardino to accept the certificates of nomination of the democratic nominees chosen at the reconvened convention held Saturday to fill out the democratic ticket has thrown the county political circles into a turmoil. It has started a movement of democracy to secure the nomination of its candidates by petition. It has also started mandamus proceedings to compel Pfeiffer to file the certificates of nomination in order to complete the ticket. The first convention did not nominate a full ticket. Under the censure of the county democracy the party leaders reconvened the county delegation to fill out the ticket. The ticket was filled, but on the morning preceding the convention the first nominees far and away the best daily the county seat has ever had. The commission, after careful investigation, found that by uniting the two institutions, not only over a million dollars would be saved in fifteen years, but that the use-less duplication of subjects would be done away with and better instruction could be given at a great saving and that the money saved from the lack of duplication of instructors, apparatus, books and equipment could be devoted to agriculture and its special subjects, thus giving the department of agriculture, as part of the university, much more strength than it would ever have as a separate institution. The commission in addition to examining local conditions secured as complete information as possible from the experience of other agricultural colleges and universities with departments of agriculture that would throw any light upon the situation. It was found in all cases where the department of agriculture was incorporated in the university that its growth had kept pace with the growth of other departments. Houck, C.C. Baum, C.O. Rust, B. Dausse B. Miller, W. L. Hale. Hark! From the Los Angeles Express. "You would hardly believe that Anaheim was at one time a hot rival of Los Angeles, would you? Well, it was. In the early seventies Anaheim was a place of considerable importance on the map and Los Angelans had to look to their laurels. One reason of this was the fact that it was about the only town of any size anywhere in this section. Pasadena was nothing but a settlement; Riverside, Redlands, Pomona, Ontario, Monrovia and all the little foothill cities had not been thought of, as you might say. Pasadena was nothing but a little place of scarcely any importance, and if it had been suggested that it would one day be connected with Los Angeles by trolley, folks would have thought the prophet was a fit subject for the lunatic asylum.
