State Leads in Fruits
The Census of Manufactures, 1905, says that in the canning and preserving of fruits and vegetables California leads all the other states by a large margin. The industry pays an important part in the manufactures of the state. In the census of 1900 it ranked third, but now it ranks first as to increase in the states manufacturing.
Almost all varieties of fruits of the best quality are grown in abundance in California and great quantities of these fruits are canned, dried or preserved in some manner. The state has long been famous for its raisins, prunes, dried apricots and peaches, dried apples and dried pears, and its canned peaches, cherries and other fruits, which are found in nearly every market of the world.
The extraordinary increase shown in the production of dried and preserved fruits is explained largely by the difference in the methods in use at the two censuses. While the seeding and packing of raisins is mostly a factory process, the drying and preserving of fruits is largely an adjunct of agriculture, and, to a great extent, should be included in the statistics or that industry. At the census of 1900, in order to prevent a duplication in the statistics of agriculture and of manufactures, a division was made between the products of establishments conducted as factories and those of farms.
Such a division could not be made in 1905, as no census of agriculture was taken in that year, consequently it was decided to include in the state ord, the best plea that can be for continuation in power."
In discussing the campaign of 1906, the book calls attention to the fact that since the term of the fifty-third congress, the house of representatives had republican, and adds:
"There is every reason to that a substantial working class can majority will be elected November."
During those ten years stated, "we have made a great advance as a nation and a people was ever made before in a situation, and in many respects than during our whole previous tory. There cannot be the doubt of republican success, voters study carefully the recieving two parties.
"There will be thousands of thousands," they say, "who will vote for the first in November, who were mere red when the democrats last majority in the house of reprentives, and they all do not
the statistics or that industry. At the census of 1900, in order to prevent a duplication in the statistics of agriculture and of manufactures, a division was made between the products of establishments conducted as factories and those of farms.
Such a division could not be made in 1905, as no census of agriculture was taken in that year, consequently it was decided to include in the statistics of manufactures for that year the figures of the entire industry as returned by the packers, notwithstanding the fact that much of their output was the rehandled product of the grower.
From a combination of the figures of the census of 1900 for the industry as reported by both agriculture and manufactures, the total production of dried and preserved fruits, reduced to a pound basis, is found to be 332,445,472 pounds. Comparing this total with the 455,-719,051 pounds reported in 1905, it appears that there was an increase of 123,293,579 pounds, or 37.1 per cent. Anyhow, it matters but little to the general result which way it is figured; the fact remains that California's industry for the canning and preserving of fruits is the leading one of the kind, and a great and growing proposition, making for greatly increased prosperity in the Golden State.
Fifty Years of Prosperity
The republican party, its achievements for half a century; and particularly its record in the present congress, is commended to the voters of the country in the campaign text-book given out at Washington this week by the congressional committee.
The book contains 273 pages, and is replete with republican doctrine, embracing practically every conceivable subject upon which informs doubt of republican success, voters study carefully the recount of two parties.
"There will be thousands of thousands," they says, "who will vote for the first in November, who were merely red when the democrats last majority in the house of representatives, and they all do not remember the awful times and conditions brought on the county that congress.
"They were not born when only democratic president since civil war was first elected. They were babes in arms when Cleveland sent his famous or its free-trade message to Congress and when, a year after the inauguration Mills bill was framed and passed the democratic house of representatives, of the fiftieth congress, fortunately, there was a republican senate to prevent the enactment of a free-trade law, and disasters calamity were averted."
First Voters in 1906
Each year in the United States nearly a million men attain the right vote. This element in election scarcely given the weight to which is entitled. In fact, few realized in each presidential year at least per cent of the vote is from this year. In the closely contested election 1896, which brought out a total about 14,000,000, more than 3,000 were cast by men who had never appeared at the polls in a national election. It seems but a short time since the election of 1904, but in choice of congress this fall over 1,000 first voters will be qualified to participate. Outside of naturalization this vast number is composed of young men who will have passed the age 21 between November, 1904, and November, 1906. It is the most interesting and potential of all additions to electorate. These young men are entering upon much more than their political duties. Their social and business careers are in the formative stage. They should grasp clearly the value...
Drying preparations simply develop dry catarrh; they dry up the secretions, which adhere to the membrane and decompose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. Avoid all drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm is such a remedy and will cure catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. A trial size will be mailed for 10 cents. All druggists sell the 50c. size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren St., N.Y.
The Balm cures without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads itself over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation.
With Ely's Cream Balm you are armed against Nasal Catarrh and Hay Fever.

Do they wish to protect American wages and industries from foreign competition, or open wide the ports to the products of cheap foreign labor, admitting it free from any duty of a home protective nature? Do first voters prefer to make the next house democratic, and so cut off the present administration from legislative support during its last two years?
Sir Walter Scott's Pluck.
When Sir Walter Scott was left poverty stricken, with debt amounting to $700,000, he said to his creditors, "Give me time, and I shall be able to pay you every farthing." Having relinquished his property to his creditors, he said to a friend in a deep, thoughtful tone: "It must be very hard thus to lose all the labors of a lifetime and be a poor man at last. But if God grants me strength and life a few years longer I have no doubt I shall be able to pay it all."
He then set to work in earnest, and during the three years that followed performed a literary feat unparalleled and reaped immense profits. In these three years, from 1827 to 1830, he wrote and published about thirty different volumes, making more than ten a year. Besides this he was editing an edition of his novels, to which he added copious notes, and such was the demand for these works that over 1,000 persons were occupied in their mere manufacture. It seems hardly credible, but nineteen of these volumes were edited and published in a year. The profits resulting from these three years of labor amounted to something like $300,-000.
