The cry of the reformers from one end of the state to the other is for a "direct primary," which is nothing more or less than our old friend the Crawford system in disguise. Republicans of this county had the plan saddled upon them by a few wily politicians at the county seat, who sought thereby to control, and did control, nominations during the ensuing campaign. The party soon saw the infamies of the scheme, and at its first opportunity discarded it for the time-honored primary election and convention plan. The system if adopted in this state would give San Francisco absolute control of state politics, and make Ruef the party's master, while under the convention plan he will hardly ever again attain to his former strength. The system if adopted in this state would give San Francisco absolute control of state politics, and make Ruef the party's master, while under the convention plan he will hardly ever again attain to his former strength. The direct primary throws control of politics in the larger centers of population. Thus Los Angeles would control the politics of that county under it more absolutely than it does at present. The country districts want none of it.
Ed Tedford and A. C. Black of Santa Ana have been named as candidates for state treasurer and railroad commissioner respectively by the so-called Independence League, which is nothing more or less than the vermiform appendix to W. R. Hearst's political aspirations. In this state Hearst seeks not only to lay the foundation for his approaching try at the presidential nomination two years hence, but also to defeat the aspirations of James D. Phelan for the democratic gubernatorial nomination. The Independence League placed District Attorney Langdon in nomination for governor, and an effort is being made to have the democratic convention endorse him.
In New York Heart's Independence League will probably nominate him for governor, after which he will try for the democratic endorsement. The Independence League is being used by Hearst as nothing more nor less than a stepping stone in his aspirations to be president.

Tedford and Black are good citizens, but they are in bad political company.
WALTER PARKER seems to have had a lot to do with the Santa Cruz convention. Mr. Parker used to be a horny-handed son of toil in Orange county, where everybody fancies himself a political boss, and in sheer desperation moved to Los Angeles, where they are not so many. Lawsy sakes, Walt, how you have grown!
Out of 200 delegates from Southern California in the Santa Cruz convention only 16 were for Pardee. In the Orange county delegation of 11 delegates only one voted for him. How about that pathological laboratory, governor?
The published statement that Clyde Bishop, republican nominee for assemblyman, was once a democrat, is true. Mr. Bishop was a democrat up to the Spanish war. When McKinley's call for troops

The opinion that Mr. Bryan has thrown the democratic fat into the fire in his recent speeches is strong and widespread. He has been traveling around the world over railroads owned by the government, and like other tourists has found second-class accommodations in the main more comfortable and satisfactory than first-class in the United States. He has not said so to the public, but this is a part of the experience of this distinguished globe-trotter. Doubtless government ownership is coming, and Mr. Bryan is not its first harbinger, but its advocacy by him has probably as effectively spoiled his chances for the presidency as his insistance on the warped and worn silver plank in his platform of 1900 ruined his chances in the ensuing campaign. Mr. Bryan is a wonderfully popular man. Blaine and Roosevelt alone in recent political history are to be compared to him, but, with all his cleverness, he appears to lack a certain saving insight, foresight and hindsight. Before his speech the hope of the democratic party was turned to him with eagerness painful in its anxious intensity. It was believed and hoped that seven years of reflection combined with rare opportunities for investigation and travel would have seasoned the intractable sophomorism of his mental make-up; but evidently it has not.

Be patient. President T. R. is likely at any moment to do something that will make spelling reform look like a back number.
The agricultural experiment station of the university of Arizona is preparing for a careful investigation of the capabilities of the Colorado valley for the growing of cotton of the highest grade. A tract of land in the valley near Yuma, is to be planted in long-staple Egyptian cotton, with seed brought from the best districts of the Nile valley. There is no doubt of the capability of that valley for the raising of cotton, for small quantities of the staple have been propagated there from time to time by southerners familiar with the product. Near Phoenix, a number of years ago, a full bale of good cotton was produced for exhibition at the New Orleans exposition. The main trouble experienced was the securing of low-priced labor, such as is abundant in the south. It is hoped that the Indians may learn the business of growing and picking cotton or that peon labor from Mexico may be utilized. Some experiments have already been made at Calevico in the Imperial valley with this Egyptian cotton and its successful culture there as in Arizona seems to be conditional only on the labor question.
Col. S. H. Finley, one of the delegates to the democratic state convention at Sacramento, carried proxies from all the other delegates from the county, and will be the only representative from here at the convention. The colonel maintained a discreet silence when asked as to his attitude in the convention, and refused to say what his instructions were as the representative of Orange county.

In the last presidential election there were 4475 votes cast in this county. Of these 2660 were republican, 1036 democratic, 502 socialist and 277 prohibitionist.
County Clerk Lester estimates the registration of voters this year at 6800. Two years ago there were 5669 names on the great register.
THE GALIFORNIA PIONEER
By Joaquin Miller.
My brave world-bearers of a world That tops the keystone, the star of States,
All hail! your battle flags are furled In fruitful peace. The golden gates Are won. The jasper walls be yours.
Your sun sinks down you soundless shores. Night falls. But lo! your lifted eyes Greet gold oncroppings in the skies.
Companioned with Sierra's peaks Our storm-born eagle shrieks his scorn Of doubt or death, and upward seeks Through unseen worlds the coming morn. Or storm, or calm, or near, or far.
His eye fixed on the morning star, He knows, as God knows, there is dawn; And so keeps on, and on, and on.
So ye, brave men of bravest days. Fought on and on with battered shield, Up bastion, rampart, till the rays Of full morn met ye on the field.
Ye knew not doubt; ye only knew To do and dare, to dare and do!
Ye knew that time, that God's first-born, Would turn the darkest night to morn.
