COUNTY BREVITIES
Word comes from the San Juan Capistrano mission, that owing to the San Francisco catastrophe and a call for Franciscan fathers in other fields, a delay has been caused in reopening the old mission. The Franciscans have decided to return to the old mission at San Juan Capistrano, and last spring began arrangements to establish a training school there. Three or four fathers were to be in charge, and aspirants for admission into the order could be taught the ritual demanded of the priests. The old mission buildings where possible, were to be used. The time set for the removal of the Franciscans from Los Angeles to this old mission town was first fixed for June, then August, and now word comes that all plans must be given up for the present. Father Lucio, who attends this mission town once a month, is the authority for the statement that the time when the training school will be opened is not fixed, and that the Franciscans have been compelled to give up their plans for the present.
Christian Jepsen, the aged former resident of Talbert, who wss placed in jail in Santa Ana three weeks ago on a contempt of court charge, has been released from custody. Jepsen was divorced from his wife some time last year after a sensational trial, and was ordered to pay her $15 per month alimony, and at the time of his arrest was $105 in arrears. His attorney secured his release on the plea that he had no funds with which to pay, nor was he able, on account of his age, to earn money for the purpose. It appeared that the situation could not be improved by keeping the old man in jail, especially as Mrs. Jepsen had to pay for

His attorney secured his release on the plea that he had no funds with which to pay, nor was he able, on account of his age, to earn money for the purpose. It appeared that the situation could not be improved by keeping the old man in jail, especially as Mrs. Jepsen had to pay for his board there at the rate of 39 cents per day, and the judge consequently signed an order for his release. Frank E. Densmore, the newly appointed superior judge of Riverside county, was on the bench for Judge West, and rendered the decision.
Jersey Wins at Sea Girt
Sea Girt, N. J., Sept. 1.—In the military shooting tournament today the principal event, the Dryden match, was won by New Jersey. The District of Columbia led through the first two stages, but New Jersey did better work at the long range, 1000 yards, and captured the trophy.
The revolver team match was won with ease by Squadron A of New York. In the other competition, the press match, Lieut. Warren H. Smith of the Cleveland Leader proved a victor.
Twenty-three teams competed in the Dryden match. Each team consisted of eight men, who fired three shots at each range of 500, 600 and 1000 yards. The rules of the national match were followed. New Jersey will hold the trophy, presented by Senator Dryden, and valued at $4000, for one year, and receives a cash prize of $150. The District of Columbia takes second prize and the third prize was taken by the cavalrymen of the United States army. The totals of the leading teams follow:

Walnut Prices Fixed
Prices for the crop of walnuts about harvested were fixed in Los Anson Saturday at a meeting of the Native Committee of the Southernornia Walnut Growers' Association at a meeting held at the Chamber Innmerce. The prices per pound, used on board cars in Los Angeles as follows: Soft shells, 11 cents; soft shells, 8 cents; standards, cents; no. 2 standards, 7½ cents.
Estimated that the crop to be tested through the various localations making up the general will aggregate 500 cars, an increase of 100 cars over last year. Growthside the association are expected harvest about 125 cars, making a total output in eastern California, south of Santa Ana.
Investing will begin probably within weeks, but the crop will not go any great extent before October.
Prices fixed for this season's are considerably below those of season, when soft shells brought 13 no. 2 soft shells, 9 cents; standard 12½ cents, and no. 2 standards, 8 cents causes led to the decision on rate, one of the most important that the present yield promises much larger than that of last year.
What a perfect cesspool system can constructed here with much less effort excavations we find a splendid sand deposit about fifteen feet into the surface (average) which will off all liquid refuses that empties a cesspool. There are other is favorable for a good cesspool that the writer will mention another time, and in regard to the wells in our locality we need not what the fluid portion of the sewage will ever reach those wells. A rule governing cesspool construction should be adopted and carried out. New pools should be dug not less five feet into gravel sand. Good governing plumbing work in all buildings will give Anaheim a that we should all be proud of.
CITIZEN.
Sir Humphry Davy.
Sir Humphry Davy married a widow as peculiar as himself. His pet affection was a lack of time. He was always in a hurry. He pretended that he had no leisure to dress himself, and when a change of linen became necessary he simply put one shirt over another until he was known to have on five or six shirts at a time. Of course he could not wear this amount of apparel without appreciably increasing his size, and his friends not in the secret were sometimes surprised to see him fall off in apparent weight twenty pounds in a day. His wife's great anxiety was to keep him "fit for company," but as he did not care a fig for company she had no easy task, and domestic discord was a common thing.
A Mother's Command.
William Brookfield, the English divine, used to tell this story: "The new bishop of New Zealand in a farewell and pathetic interview with his mother after his appointment was thus addressed by her in such sequence as sobs and tears would permit: 'I suppose they will eat you, my dear. I try to think otherwise, but I suppose they will. Well, we will leave it in the hands of Providence. But, if they do, mind, my dear, and disagree with them.'"
The Snail.
The slowest creatures in creation are snails and certain small beetles. Some of them habitually move only a foot or two in an hour, but this slowness is partly due to the fact that they remain motionless at intervals. By measuring the distances covered by snails when pointed to look to transporting all members of the G. A. R. and baggage between the station and campgrounds without charge.
Little has been done during the day excepting to get settled. Every car on the Pacific Electric line has been crowded, and many women are in attendance.
All the tents are new, clean and provided with all conveniences, and all who are here are enjoying home comforts.
The grounds are well-lighted and in excellent condition. There is an abundance of pure water on each lot and every provision has been made for the comfort of the old soldiers.

Mrs. Cleveland's Courtesy.
The following pretty story is told of Mrs. Grover Cleveland: At one of the public receptions given at the White House an old lady who was drawn up the line that was pushing its way toward to shake hands with the president's wife dropped her handkerchief before getting to Mrs. Cleveland. She was too old and rheumatic to stoop down and recover it, and those back of her in the line were too intent upon getting the one fleeting glimpse possible of the mistress of the White House to noe the old lady's loss, and the handkerchief was trampled upon roughly.
Just before the old lady reached her house, Cleveland stepped out of her place and deftly picked up the handkerchief, kicked it in her dress and, taking her fresh one, which was of the most delicate, dainty lace, smiling handed to the old lady with the sweet rea-
