COUNTY BREVITIES Mrs. Adrian Marks, wife of Attorney Marks of Fullerton, died in that town on Sunday a few hours after giving birth to a little son, now alive and doing well. Up to Saturday she was in the best of health, going out for a ride in the afternoon with her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Marks, who before her marriage was Miss Adrian Dowell of Santa Ana, were married about two years ago and located in Fullerton where a neat home was completed immediately after the wedding. Mrs. Marks was one of the best known and most popular young women of Orange county and for some time before her marriage was a teacher in the Santa Ana city schools. A deal was closed in Los Angeles last week whereby Mme. Modjeska's home in Santiago Canyon was sold to the Townsend-Dayman Investment Co. The purchase price of the property is said to be $40,000. The property consists of 1341 acres, and is to be developed into a summer colony, with an exclusive club for wealthy people. A party composed of S. Townsend, his wife and daughter, Count Bozenta, and Attorney H. C. Dillon of Los Angeles went up to the ranch some days ago for the purpose of looking the property over more thoroughly. The sale was confirmed by Mr. Townsend on Friday, and $5000 of the purchase money has been placed in escrow pending the completion of the abstract. Madam Modjeska leaves shortly for the east to begin her fall theatrical engagement. "One of the most destructive blights that ever affected fruit has the California pear crop in its grip," said W. A. Beard, secretary of the Sacramento valley development association. "The pear blight is attacking all trees and unless speedily stopped will destroy the entire crop and the trees and will cause a loss of over $2,000,000 to the revenue of the state." Beard was in the city today to see about a meeting to be held in Sacramento, to discuss the matter. Farmers from all parts of California will be present and one of the greatest campaigns ever launched against the pest will be started. The blight which is working such havoc among the pears is caused by bacteria and the tree is inoculated through the bud. The germ is usually carried by bees which such the honey and leave the germ, which they get from a diseased bud, in the healthy tree. The work at once starts. The germs eat down to the bark of the tree and the healthier the tree the faster the work of destruction. No hope is found for the tree which germs have once attacked unless diseased portions are cut off and burned. The blight spreads rapidly and whole orchards may become inoculated from a single tree in a short time. The Onas, a tribe of Indians inhabiting the mainland of the Tierra del Fuego island, are physical giants. Their average height is over six feet. A few are six and one-half feet; a few fall below six feet. The women are more corpulent and not so tall. There is no race in the world with a more perfect physical development than the Ona Indians. This is partly due to the topography of the country and the distribution of the game, which makes long marches across the country a necessity. In mentality they fall far below their physical attainments. In the past their supply of game has been plentiful, and this may account for the lack of inventive genius among them. This lack of progressive skill is portrayed in their home life, clothing and homes. Their children suffer from it, for, contrary to the practice common among most Indians of feeding, dressing and training the children well, the Onas' little ones are mostly naked, poorly fed and altogether neglected. They have abundant material for supplying themselves with clothing and homes, and yet they throw a few branches together, put skins over the windward side and then shiver under the miserable shelter. Scientists who have made a study of the subject say that the language of the Onas is the strangest ever listened to. Many of the words are not difficult to pronounce, nor is the construction of the sentences difficult, but very few words are interrupted by a sound which it is impossible to produce. The speaker hacks, coughs and grunts, distorting his face in the most inhuman manner, and then passes on to the next stumbling block. The Onas live principally upon meat, which in former years was obtained from the guanaco.—New York Herald. ST. SWITHIN AND RAIN. The Legend of the Chapel Over the Bishop's Grave. The legend of St. Swithin is an example that will occur to every one: St. Swithin's day, if thou dost rain, For forty days it will remain; St. Swithin's day, if thou be fair, For forty days 'twill rain nae mair. St. Swithin, bishop of Winchester, according to the author of "The Popular Antiquities," was "a man equally noted for uprightness and humility. So far did he carry the latter virtue that on his deathbed he requested to be buried not within the church, but outside the churchyard on the north of the sacred building, where his corpse might receive the eavesdroppings from the roof and his grave be trodden by the feet of passersby. His lowly request was complied with, and in this neglected spot his remains reposed till about 100 years afterward, when a fit of pious indignation seized the clergy at the fact that the body of so holy a member of their order was allowed to occupy such a position, and on an appointed day they all assembled to convey it with great pomp to the adjoining cathedral of Winchester. When they were about to commence the ceremony a heavy rain burst forth and continued without intermission for the forty succeeding days. The monks interpreted this tempest as a warning from heaven of the blasphemous nature of their attempt to contravene the direction of St. Swithin, and instead of disturbing his remains they erected a chapel over his grave." "St. Swithin is christening the apples" is the more poetical way of describing St. Swithin's rain.
