No little interest from a political standpoint attaches to the vote of San Francisco at the coming election, which, as a result of the April fire, will be decreased probably two-thirds. The registration for primaries in that county has been completed and shows 22,000 voters enrolled. That would point to a vote of 20,000 in November. At the election of 1904 the city cast 65,000 votes. The total vote of the five other large counties of the state in 1904, given in round numbers, was as follows:
Los Angeles ..... 49,000
Alameda ..... 27,000
Santa Clara ..... 12,500
Sacramento ..... 10,000
Fresno ..... 9,000
All of these counties will show a large gain this year, Los Angeles and Alameda especially. Los Angeles is likely to poll 65,000 votes as many as San Francisco did in 1904. San Diego already has nearly a scandal more malodorous than 75 per cent. of the subscription to rebuild the been paid into the private Grand Duke Alexander M. vitch, and that no account been obtainable vouching expenditure. Work is to be commence by the reclamation service construction of the Granite ples diversion dam, at the canal systems of the San valley. All of these counties will show a large gain this year, Los Angeles and Alameda especially. Los Angeles is likely to poll 65,000 votes as many as San Francisco did in 1904. San Diego already has nearly 10,000 voters registered and will take its place this year among the six or seven largest counties of the state. San Francisco will drop from first place to third and temporarily will not be in the same class as Los Angeles and Alameda. Orange county will poll exceeding 7000 votes.
San Francisco's representation in the state convention will be 159 delegates. This is based upon its vote at the election two years ago. As showing the strides making by Los Angeles, its delegates number 129. In the presidential campaign two years hence, Los Angeles will have probably as many as San Francisco has this year, while the latter county will drop to probably 50. The April calamity is bearing its direful fruits.
The fiftieth anniversary of the first nomination by a republican national convention for president and vice president of the United States will be celebrated during the sessions at the fifth biennial convention of the California state league of republican clubs, to be held at Santa Cruz on Monday and Tuesday, September 3d and 4th next. Invitations are extended to all who voted for Gen. John C. Fremont in 1856, and also to the veterans of the Mexican, civil and Spanish-American wars to attend. Appropriate exercises will be held in honor of veterans of the nation.

It is learned that the immediate cause of the Douma’s dissolution was the great fear felt by the grand dukes and high courts of Finland, including Trepoff, that the Douma was about to prosecute an inquiry into their extensive robberies of the public treasury. The navy was to have been the first subject of the Douma’s thorough investigation. Proofs were already in representatives’ hands. Grand Duke Alexis, naval commander-in-chief, and his intermediaries, received enormous amounts in bribes from foreign shipbuilders. The Douma had also

If we count silver as merchandise, as we ought to, although the government's bookkeepers persist in putting it in a class by itself, the $3,000,000,000 mark in the aggregate merchandise exports and imports would be left far behind, and the balance in our favor on the trade account with the outside world would be $557,000,000.

Chairman Sherman’s spellbinders must be instructed to present these figures with a good deal of prominence during the campaign. Leader Sherman must also impress upon them the even more significant fact that the exports of manufactures have increased faster than those of any other class of goods which we sent out. While the exports of agriculture have increased faster than those of any other class of goods which we sent out. While the exports of agriculture have increased 48 per cent in the past ten years, the exports of manufactures have increased 196 per cent. In the fiscal year 1906 we sold over $600,-ooo,000 in manufactures to the rest of the world. Here is the real test of the strength of our industrial system as created by the tariff. At the outbreak of the rebellion the United States was virtually an agricultural country. Under the operation of the Republcan tariff system the United States made such advances in the twenty-five years of republican power we gained the first place among the countries of the world in the extent of our manufactures by 1880, beating the United Kingdom in that year, and our lead has been steadily lengthening ever since. The tariff has been the principal cause of our pre-eminence in this field. By the protection which it has given to the home producer, the tariff has incited discovery and invention, constructed labor-saving appliances, developed the capabilities of our people and diversified their activities, caused domestic

United Kingdom in that year, and our lead has been steadily lengthening ever since. The tariff has been the principal cause of our preeminence in this field. By the protection which it has given to the home producer, the tariff has incited discovery and invention, constructed labor-saving appliances, developed the capabilities of our people and diversified their activities, caused domestic competition, and, while defending the producer against concerted foreign attacks, has reduced the cost and improved the quality of all sorts of commodities to the American consumer.
These advances have enabled us to reach out farther and farther for foreign markets as the home market has become inadequate, and thus Europe has encountered what it calls the "American commercial invasion." The tariff can claim a large share of the credit for these conquests at home and abroad. Manifestly, a system which has revolutionized the whole industrial scheme of the United States, which has given us greater prosperity than was ever known before in any part of the world, and which has placed our country so far in the lead for wealth that it is ahead of its two nearest rivals combined, will have something to say for itself in the canvass of 1906. The republican party, as the creator and the defender of the tariff, will have some powerful arguments ready to its hand in this year's campaign.

Pervful activity has been shown in San Francisco during the of July and reconstruction been pushed with vigor.
It was a loss of 335,000 of the population during the first month fire and it is estimated that 200,000 have returned, while waiting in nearby cities for operations in order that they can. The present population died at 350,000.
Accommodations are not sat- and are rapidly being placed in condition to care for all who may come.
"The transcontinental railroads report east-bound travel normal, while west bound travel is far above the normal.

"There is a great demand for ordinary laborers, and for workmen in all departments of the building trades.
"In the state conditions indicate one of the most prosperous years in the history of California. Crops are exceptionally fine, especially grain: Labor is in demand at good wages for harvesting the crops of grain and fruits.
"Reports from the mining districts indicate a greater output of mineral wealth than for several years past."
