Automobile Party
Sixteen Reo automobiles invaded the quiet shades of Laguna on Sunday morning, bearing a picnic party of some sixty persons from this city, Fullerton, Orange and Santa Ana. The party was personally conducted by O. M. Skinner, who led the way from Orange to the beach in his touring car. The party gathered in this city at 7:30 o'clock. The start for Orange was made at 8:20, a photograph of the assembled machines being taken before departure. Twelve Reos lined the roadway from here to Orange, each bearing a streamer containing the name, as well as flags flying in the breezes. Orange was made in fifteen minutes. Here three machines joined the parade. At Santa Ana another was picked up, and the run to the beach began. The machines were driven by O. M. Skinner, S. O. Walker, W. J. Traves, J. H. Boney, Merton Skinner, James Conliff, C. O. Rust, W. O. Borden, Warren Fletcher, A. M. Saxton, Samuel Kraemer, C. G. Billings, Mr. Williams, W. E. Babb, Mr. Dickenson and Ted Dickel.
A number of the drivers were accompanied by their families. Others in the party were C. F. Grim and family; Wm. Crowther, Erwin Barr, Frank Tausch, Judge Howard, Arthur Staley, George Schneider of the Fullerton Santa Ana was reached in an hour five minutes, and Anaheim in twenty-five minutes.
The trip was most interesting enjoyable.
The big car used four gallons of oilene on the trip, and ran two miles here before the run was completed. The baby Reo used 2½ gallons of oilene, and after returning from the beach was driven to the O'wells, a distance of 12 miles turn, making a total distance day, on 2½ gallons of gasoline miles.
Chamber of Commerce
At the meeting of the chamber commerce held Monday evening street-paving committee commendable progress. Members of the committee in their interview property owners on Center, on west of Los Angeles, found that in the main in favor of paving proposed to pave Los Angeles between Citron and Chartres ter street from Lemon to O'wells these streets embrace the mass thoroughfares of this city pave them would be a step in direction. A number of the drivers were accompanied by their families. Others in the party were C. F. Grim and family; Wm. Crowther, Erwin Barr, Frank Tausch, Judge Howard, Arthur Staley, George Schneider of the Fullerton News, T. E. Stephenson of Santa Ana Register and Henry Kuchel of the Gazette.
An hour after leaving this city the line of machines, stretching over a mile of country, entered the foothills beyond El Toro. Laguna was reached in an hour and a half.
Mr. Skinner is considerable of a speed maniac himself, and is competent to give Barney Oldfield points in the game of annihilating distance. The roads in the canyon were not such as to admit of speeding, but in the level stretches on the San Joaquin ranch a thirty-mile clip was maintained for a distance of ten miles. On the return trip a thirty-five mile clip was maintained for a considerable distance.
Arriving at the beach the party found a number of campers already there. The party strolled upon the beach and about the picturesque village. Many enjoyed bathing in the surf, while others went fishing.
At noon lunch baskets were opened and a rare spread partaken of. Those who brought no lunches were entertained at dinner at the beach hotel, which set a first-class meal before the guests.
The return trip began at 4 o'clock.

Buena Park, so far as we can learn, who is not supporting Carpenter for school superintendent loyally. Can the republicans of Fullerton say as much for Walker for sheriff? If not, why not? Stories of mushroom origin have been circulated during the week relative to Walker, but he has only to put his No. 14 brogan down upon them to entirely demonstrate their utter falsity. These stories are aimed, of course, at discrediting him, but are so lacking in foundation, so peurile, so childish, as to merit nothing but contempt. One of these stories is that he had a bunch of 50 delegates in the recent republican convention which he offered for sale at $100 to whichever candidate could produce the money. That is the rankest kind of bosh, but possessing its element of wilful vindictiveness just the same. The man does not live who can charge up a dishonorable act on Walker's part. He landed here thirteen years ago, from Kansas, with his wife and three babies, not overly possessed of the world's goods, but long on grit, industry, sobriety and perseverance. Many a night after working at well-boring for other people, he came home and plowed his land and planted his crop.
He never defaulted a dollar, and has a clean, honorable, upright record.
He is going to sweep the northern end of the county, as it was never swept before. But what about our friends at Fullerton? Will they stand by their pledges? We hear some will not. We will wager our head against a football they will.
What are the latest indications from the outer battlements, Mr. Carpenter?
We are standing manfully by you, to a man. Is everything serene in your town for this man of whom we speak?

She was invited to accompany the party, which she decided to do. A telephone message changed the carriage for a three-seater, and the party drove to the rich section northeast of town, where, before returning each of the three purchased ten acres of land. Three new settlers are thus added to the population of the community. Capt. Stern is under the impression that Sunday was his lucky day.

Sheldon Littlefield and son returned on Thursday afternoon from a five weeks' trip to the desert. They report the weather extremely hot, but game plenty. Cottontail rabbits were shot from the wagon along the roadway. Many quail were seen, but none shot on account of the young. While at Bon-ego Springs, a young donkey approached camp, having probably been abandoned on the desert by some prospector. The animal was shy, but after the lapse of several days was tamed sufficiently to remain with the horses. It was brought home. Mr. Littlefield returned to find he had been nominated by the democratic convention for justice of the peace for this township. He announces he will accept the nomination, and if elected will accept the office.
Speaking of the heat on the desert, Mr. Littlefield states that when he reached Elsinore on his way back he encountered a rancher who said he was waiting for the sun to go down so that he might go and shoot some rabbits. The thermometer registered 112. However Mr. Littlefield thought the weather was chilly as compared with that on the desert.
