The construction of the Southern Pacific railway from Benedict to Smeltzer will mark the building of a road which the company has had in view for a number of years. The new line will save a twenty-mile haul for several thousand carloads of freight which now go around by way of Newport Beach and Santa Ana and thence to this city. This freight will soon go by way of the more direct route, and will come to this city from Benedict on the Los Alamitos line, and thence to Los Angeles. The new line will also soon have a mail route established upon it, and mail for Garden Grove, Westminster, Smeltzer and other points in the peatlands will go by way of the new route instead of by the roundabout way through Santa Ana.
Congressman Smith's attitude in opposing right of way for the experience over again. Nated and elected Need after term, only to have (Stanislaus) cut out trict. Now we seem to the same old game.
Now it is the grain rotting this is an era of native cleaning. In the very last session Senator LaFollette and presented a resolution will keep the Interstate Commission working for year after they get their coal and oil invoices. The resolution was adopted out division and now roads will come under the gist of it was just that tor LaFollette said he reason to suspect that carrying roads were just as any of the oil or coal said that some of the large tors in the grain belt would by practically the same owned the railroads that the grain, that there was a suspicion of collusion the elevators and the rails affecting the price of grain it from the farmer at a when it was wanted on the to help influence a deal. that the names of the appeared in the director railroads and in the elevations and that if the Commerce Commission
CONGRESSMAN SMITH’s attitude in opposing right of way for the Owens river conduit across public lands in Inyo county is inexplicable from any point of view, but his purpose to limit the amount of water which Los Angeles should procure from Owens river to a quantity sufficient only for domestic purposes is so palpably in the interest of corporations that it excites suspicion. Los Angeles seeks to procure water not only for domestic uses and for irrigation, but also for manufacturing electrical energy, to be used for a municipal lighting plant and for other purposes. The bill providing for right of way for the conduit passed the senate without opposition, but Smith-pigeon-holed it in committee in the house. He argued his case so well before Secretary Hitchcock that when Senator Flint went to that official to intercede for the bill in the closing days of congress, the secretary refused to interfere. Flint laid the matter before the president, who immediately took it up, with the result that all objections were withdrawn by Smith, and the bill passed the house.
Smith is openly charged with playing into the hands of the corporations, but probably he has other reasons for opposing the Owens river project and the proposed consolidation of Los Angeles city and county. Should consolidation be effected, as it probably will within the next two years, 50,000 population will be segregated

Smith is openly charged with playing into the hands of the corporations, but probably he has other reasons for opposing the Owens river project and the proposed consolidation of Los Angeles city and county. Should consolidation be effected, as it probably will within the next two years, 50,000 population will be segregated from Los Angeles and included in Smith's congressional district. This, in addition to the normal increase of population, will inevitably exclude Smith's home county (Kern) from this congressional district, by the next federal census. Doubtless this had much to do with his attitude on the right of way bill, yet we read in certain newspapers the statement that "Smith was right." If he was right, then the president was wrong. If Smith was right, then Senator Flint, Congressman McLachlin and every one else at Washington was wrong, for the bill passed congress unanimously. Smith will soon be home, and we hope he will have time to explain his attitude upon these interesting matters. He is being endorsed for renomination, but such course will be a mistake. He will inevitably be cut out of the district four years hence, and then we shall have the Needham ex-

Los Angeles democrats are talking of forming an independent political organization, and the county central committee of the party has advised that no ticket be placed in the field this year for county offices. Not so many years ago Los Angeles was the banner democratic county of the state, and no republican had the ghost of a chance for office. Now the political pendulum seems to have swung the other way. Verily, strange things have come upon the democratic party in Southern California in the past twenty years.
J. B. LIPPINCOTT, supervising engineer for the Pacific Coast district of the United States reclamation service, and hydrographer of the United States geological survey for California, has resigned from the service of the government to take up the private practice of his profession, and in all probability will be engaged by the city of Los Angeles to carry out the Owens river project in association with Engineer Wm. Mulholland. Mr. Lippincott's thorough knowledge of the hydrography of the Pacific coast and his experience in the construction of municipal waterworks will be invaluable to the city, and his engagement is virtually a certainty, although it has not been officially announced. For some time he has had in contemplation the step just taken, largely because the government work was compelling him to give up private practice, but the attacks made upon him by the interests opposed to the Owens river project moved him to postpone final action until his position in the matter was vindicated and approved.
Announcement
Sandilands and Weisel announce the opening of the Orange County Garage on West Center street, Anaheim.
They are going to handle the Moline automobile, undoubtedly the best all around family car for the money. These cars are made in three models—Model G, 16-horse-power light touring car; Model C, 20-horse-power touring car; and Model A, 35-horse-power.
In the recent endurance run around the "kite," two of these cars entered and two finished. Not a mechanical trouble was experienced during the whole run, notwithstanding the fact that these machines had just been taken from the cars and without any adjustments whatever, started in the run, and both received first-class certificates.

In the recent endurance run around the "kite," two of these cars entered and two finished. Not a mechanical trouble was experienced during the whole run, notwithstanding the fact that these machines had just been taken from the cars and without any adjustments whatever, started in the run, and both received first-class certificates.
Model C lost 15 points for unknowingly exceeding the speed limit of 20 miles an hour and one point for stopping engine in order to avoid collision with a street car. Model G lost one minute by stopping engine, also to avoid collision, 4 minutes for filling oiler which was feeding too much (it had never been adjusted), and one minute for tightening low-speed clutch. In the matter of gasoline consumption the Model C made a splendid record for a four cylinder car, carrying 5 people over the entire route on 12 gallons.
Model G made a poor gasoline showing, which was due to the fact that the gasoline cock under tank shook open.
A noticeable point is that the Molire light-touring car was the lowest priced car in its class, costing $1150 00, with gas lamps and storage battery. It came through with a better record than many cars costing twice as much.
The Orange County Garage will be equipped to take care of the most difficult repair work in a first-class manner, an expert mechanic being in charge of this department. Prices will be reasonable and work guaranteed; no tinkering.
To Coronado Beach and Return, $3.50.
The Santa Fe will sell tickets to Coronado and return June 14th to Sept. 10th with a final limit until Sept. 30th, 1906, for return passage, at the very low rate of $3.50 for the round trip. J. H. Clabaugh, agent.
For sale, on the Jungle ranch, all kinds of cattle, and a high-wheeled wagon; White Pekin duck eggs. Apply B. J. Snodgrass and Son.
