IS STARBUCK'S PEN
Rambling Statement Against
New Telephone Company
—Feverish Expiring Gasps
Br. Starbuck of Fullerton has had another gasp.
If any one can tell what he is driving at in his latest screed, that person will be given a free phone for a week by the new telephone company.
Starbuck ordered 300 printed copies of the article, appearing in these columns last week, entitled "Starbuck Shows His Hand," and is now circulating them to a long-suffering populace.
We have had so many calls for this article that, in response to a loud call arising from Orangethorpe, Buena Park and other points, not to mention those from this city, we have reset the article and it appears upon another page.
Br. Starbuck's latest gasp upon the situation reads like this:
"Read the Gazettee? U Auto. Fearing some may not, I ordered 300 eulogies printed. Great fellow, I. Even I did not know I was so great. (I thought it). The peoples' 1st chance to know it. I run the M. and M. Co. (the whole thing) two papers in F., one in Los A., the Tel. Co. (the Prest draws the salary) (lots more things.) I settled the 10c tariff. Four 69 letters were not worth the ink. A word from me and presto—! 'Getting rich?' don't deny it. Best months commissions, $139.93. Out of this, all operating and sundry expenses & nearly 24 hrs. work, myself. I earn it. I gave you continu-
CONGRATULATIONS EXT
Anaheim congratulates Mr. Lauchlin and Gunderson on of directors of the water company energetic work in brigade vote the question of constancy Yorba reservoir.
Of course the Mother Gratulates Messrs. Crowthee and Kraemer also, but live do upon the north side, it to be expected of them that take up the matter which concerns especially the when they had little if any upon the board from this district.
We have of late years hadresentation upon the board charitable way of putting it had poor sticks in service, seemed awfully hard to lose they are now deep in the fastnesses of oblivion hope they will long remain.
In Messrs. Gunderson and lin, however, we have two less and energetic directors cordially co-operate with members of the board in any printing for the good of the irrigation company.
Anaheim extends congratulations them, and to all members of favoring the great enterprise.
As for Mr. Hale, we regard gentleman actuated by honesty but not at all times open to by dispassionate argument, faith that he will yet see the announce himself in favor terprise. He is the one company opposed to it which is worth a rap, and we believe mon sense will yet be strong to lead him out of the entail which enemies of the com set about him.
"Getting rich?" don't deny it. Best months commissions, $139.93. Out of this, all operating and sundry expenses & nearly 24 hrs. work, myself. I earn it. I gave you continuous service when it cost me over $15 per mo. above in com, for a long time I have spared no expense to give you the best. Yet many are told "almost every subscriber has it in for Starbuck." "Drug clerks for operators (insinuating boomerang, worthy of a fiend.) My faithful operators' work should justify resentment among their patrons, etc.
About those "120 names." Such deceptions as "Put down your name, anyway; it will help me; you can scratch it out." "Only one person in Placentia flatly refused." "We offered the A. U. W. Co. the headgate free & got $1 25." "Have not canvassed F. at all." "We have driven the Sunset entirely out of Redlands," etc. are their own destruction. Redlands has nearly 600. Santa Ana has gained 72 per cent in one year. Los A., Pasadena, Long B. & many others over 100 per cent in 2 yrs. They do not spew us out as fast as you have been led to believe. To get some of the people you will need a Sunset, also, If we give good service, Why cut it up? Ask from Whittier to La Habra & many other places, how many they run on a line. Most Resp, I."
Br. Starbuck seems to be unduly excited. He has been working overtime; and needs a rest. The new telephone company will give it to him.
Hooray for Starbuck!

A Hard Question.
Modern Maid—I wish some advice. Old Lady—Certainly, my dear. What is it? Modern Maid—Shall I marry a man whose tastes are the opposite of mine and quarrel with him, or shall I marry a man whose tastes are the same as mine and get tired of him?

Packed-Beef Horrors
Boston, June 2.—Independent of the United States government investigation of the packing industry and alleged traffic in diseased meats, and that of the President, the State of Massachusetts has been quietly conducting a beef inquiry of its own, which was begun before the Garfield affair started.
No less than thirty-four convictions of dealers and wholesalers representing the packers have been secured within the last three months, eight of them within thirty days, by the State Board of Health for selling "embalmed" or diseased beef. There is something like a panic among the dealers for more prosecutions are coming. As a result of the raids most of the beef seized and for which prosecutions were made was Chicago killed and packed beef. The matter now has reached a point where the Chicago packers must quit the State or revise their business methods. They are afraid of the revelations that may come from the authorities in the publication of the State board's findings and bulletins on the subject.
Just at present no Chicago packing-house can be singled out as being the most guilty. Until the State board's bulletins have given out the information it is impossible to say whether the prosecutions were for selling Armour, Cudahy or Swift's products.
Chemist Leach of the board also has proof that oysters pickled with boric acid, hamburg steak preserved with sulphate of soda, eggs preserved with formaldehyde, sausage preserved with borax, and other meat products with sulphurous acid, have been sold in this state very recently, even while the revelation about the packers were being published.
Curious Chinese Play
A pack of Chinese plays genuine curiosity. They printed in black on thin paper average width and breadth that of the finger of a hunter some cases they are only broad and about three inches in length. The length, the size, is always at least that of the width. Some have queer representations "kings," "queens" and "kings" upon them in black. Orated with the figures birds and fishes. Those darins and high officials images of mythological creatures.
