GREATER ORANGE COUNTY
The Santa Ana chamber of commerce has recently had before it for discussion the proposition to include in Orange county such portions of Los Angeles county as will be set off from that county in the proposed consolidation of that city and county. The body, we read, favors the scheme, and "repudiates" the charge prevailing in certain portions of Orange county to the effect that Santa Ana seemed to be cold-footed concerning the enterprise. This sentiment will be gladly co-operated with, we are sure, in this city and Fullerton, where most of the work in reference to the subject has been done in the past. But the Santa Ana chamber of commerce, it seems, is opposed to including the San Gabriel river.
Los Angeles, and consider cussion of a private nature had concerning the subject.
The San Francisco changed the aspect of affair throughout the state, brought about a change in of consolidation. A special of the legislature will be Gov. Pardee within a week for the purpose of consider matters as affect the state sult of the great fire, anderner has been persuadedclude in his call a provsuch legislation as will fit under review.
Therefore, should such a tutional amendment be added the voters in November, and appears to be no reasonable for its rejection, a bill drawn for submission to the lature meeting in January providing for a consolidation and county government Angeles. This will bring to where we were before the law committee made its decision that there was no law at fitting the case.
The matter is one of greatest to Orange county, for we to gain the towns of Whittier, Norwalk, Los Nietos, New and other communities with borders. The assessed valuation this territory exceeds $5,000.
the effect that Santa Ana seemed to be cold-footed concerning the enterprise. This sentiment will be gladly co-operated with, we are sure, in this city and Fullerton, where most of the work in reference to the subject has been done in the past. But the Santa Ana chamber of commerce, it seems, is opposed to including the San Gabriel river, giving as its reason therefor the fact that Orange county already "has one river," which "bothers us quite enough already."
The understanding among people in the northern part of Orange county who have kept posted upon this matter is that the southern line of the consolidated city and county will probably be at a point considerably north of New river, and some Los Angeles people have suggested that it be placed at Old river. Wherever the line be placed, however, certain it is there will be no objection hereabout to the inclusion of territory so set off. It would be foolhardy for Orange county to make such objection. Let us accept as much territory as is offered. Certainly we are not in position to say that we shall accept this and reject that portion of the excluded territory. We must take the lean with the fat, if indeed any of this rich San Gabriel valley may be considered in the first category. As a matter of fact it is among the richest sections in Southern California, and will, we think, if it comes, be quite a welcome addition to Orange county. As to the river itself, what man or set of men, except the Santa Ana chamber of commerce, would, here in Southern California, where water is the basic principle of our prosperity, refuse to accept it?
The matter of the enlargement of Orange county has been in abeyance.
quite a welcome addition to Orange county. As to the river itself, what man or set of men, except the Santa Ana chamber of commerce, would here in Southern California, where water is the basic principle of our prosperity, refuse to accept it?
The matter of the enlargement of Orange county has been in abeyance for several weeks on account of the report, made directly after the meeting at Whittier in March, by the law committee of the consolidation commission that a constitutional amendment would be necessary before the proposed consolidation could take place. That set the matter off into the future for a period of three years. Thus a constitutional amendment would have to be passed at the legislature in 1907, subsequently ratified by the people of the state, and thereafter an enabling act passed by the legislature of 1909 before consolidation could be effected. It had been the supposition of the movers for consolidation that the legislature next year would pass the act enabling Los Angeles to erect itself into a city and county government, and all plans had been made with that end in view. When it was discovered there was no law fitting the case, the matter was permitted temporarily to rest. While the matter was thus delayed, there was no abatement of interest, here or in community. He occupied the sponsible position of township since the time when Yuma township was first organized, many years ago, and was clerk of the alta school district eighteen years. He leaves two brothers and one sister to mourn his loss. They are Feliz C., Rudolfo C., and Aristeo Marquez.
Judge Marquez was an educator and refined gentleman, and was leader among men of his race in locality. He was widely known beloved throughout the county, ing frequently in this city and at county seat. During celebration the Mexican independence day delivered speeches in the Spanish language that were models of guistic grace, and he roused hearers to a high pitch of patriotic fervor. On these occasions, we extolling highly the many virtues of the Mexican people, he never sight of the fact that he stood up American soil, and he led his herers in words of enthusiastic prairie for the land of his birth. On such occasions Old Glory flew in his breezes overhead, along with his flag under which the Mexicans live to see Maximillian fall and the arrival of Bazaine banished from their shores forever.
At the bier of this gifted young man, so soon called from the sphere of his earthly activities, his friend place a wreath of sweet flowers which in his lifetime he loved well, and the unbidden tear starts

DECORATION DAY
Malvern Hill Post, No. 131, G. A. R., yesterday observed the time-honored custom of decorating with bright flowers the graves of the patriot dead at the cemetery. With the veterans were many citizens who placed flowers upon
the last resting places of loved ones.
The cemetery resembled a vast bed of lillies and roses and other flowers;
The ceremonies were brief and simple.
The post gathered at 10 o'clock at the monument for the unknown dead. A bugle call, awakening the echoes in
the sacred place, rang out with silvery cadence, its music thrilling the souls of all but those who slept beneath the sod, its echoes dying away in the clouds.
PASADENA is discussing the propriety of forming a new county, so strongly is it opposed to being consolidated with Greater Los Angeles,
and surveyors have been in the field running lines to take in everything north of the San Gabriel at Azusa.
A mass meeting has been held at which the new county was favored,
and consolidation voted down. Long Beach also opposes Greater Los Angeles, but is so located geographically that, unless it be absorbed by the Angelic burg, it will take a Philadelphia lawyer to find out where she is at. Meantime Orange county extends a welcome to all expatriated portions of the imperial county to come and be of us. Whittier is with us in spirit, and we have little doubt will ere long become a part of the best county in the state. The political geography of Southern California bids fair to experience consider-able of a transformation scene before the Owens river water comes down from Lodore.
