THE NEW TELEPHONE COMPANY
Every business man in this city should become a subscriber to the Valley Home Telephone company now organizing here and at other points in the valley. The new candidate for public favor will include this city, Fullerton, Placentia, the oil wells, Yorba, Loara, Miraflores, Garden Grove, Los Alamitos, Buena Park, Orangethorpe, Olive, Benedict, and Brookshurst. Messrs. Dunn and Slater, who are representing E. G. Hubbard, the Redlands millionaire who is financing the enterprise, state that so well do the people of these communities feel toward the new company that they are confident 1200 phones will be installed. Free switching service will be given to all these communities, and long-distance messages to outside points will go over the lines of the Home telephone company and the line run around Santa Ana. Anaheim wants to get into communication with den Grove and Westminster it wants to be placed on same basis in so doing a favored community. Fostering this business company has dealt us a good ago in order to secure free livery for itself. Anaheim miles nearer these cities than is Santa Ana by rail correct geographical route of this city, and not Santa Ana.
The new telephone company serve to bring these commuters closer touch with this city people have expressed their favoring the return of route to this city, and they will be again taken up by postoffice department at ton.
Every business man should subscribe for service new telephone company only should our business be a phone in his office, but residence as well. Stay town, and your town will you. And as for those companies which discriminate against discontinue your business
ing the enterprise, state that so well do the people of these communities feel toward the new company that they are confident 1200 phones will be installed. Free switching service will be given to all these communities, and long-distance messages to outside points will go over the lines of the Home telephone company.
The Valley Home company will expend $125,000 upon the system, which will be of the latest and most approved pattern. New phones will be installed, instead of the antiquated wall affairs now in use by the Sunset company.
This city has a score to settle with the Sunset company, and unless we mistake the temper of our people, that score will soon be up for final adjudication. The temper of our people is that they are about done with the Sunset company. We have been subjected to unjust and discriminating tolls by that company for years, while other communities have had and still enjoy free-switching privileges. Thus Fullerton talks with the oil wells, with Placentia, La Habra and Yorba free of switching tolls, while Anaheim has all along been subjected to a discriminating impost for this service. Last year ninety business men of Fullerton and Placentia, as well as every telephone subscriber in Anaheim, signed a petition praying for the elimination of this unjust charge, but the Sunset company merely granted a nominal reduction. This charge was originally 25 cents per message; then it was cut, after vigorous protest on the part of patrons of the company, to 15 cents. Last year the toll was reduced to 10 cents. It might just as well have been kept at the original figure.
Every business man should subscribe for service only should our business be a phone in his office, but residence as well. Stay town, and your town will you. And as for those companies which discriminate against discontinue your business with them. Sunset solicits overrun this city during seeking to have new signed up for a year by no old patrons; but it is bor lost, for our people, the unjust discrimination ticed against them by the pany, have set about themselves of these unconditions. They desire not to contract.
It is too early to talk about location of the central office new company. Anaheim the new company first content to talk of the cession afterwards. If we central station, we must phones to back us up inention; if we have them central station will be located where. But that is of no importance. Let us have the first; then we can talk cession later on.
It will be seen that this company means much to gross and prosperity, not this city, but of every county in the valley. And the people are taking hold of no doubt that the enterprise be inaugurated without delay be a success from the start.

but the Sunset company merely granted a nominal reduction. This charge was originally 25 cents per message; then it was cut, after vigorous protest on the part of patrons of the company, to 15 cents. Last year the toll was reduced to 10 cents. It might just as well have been kept at the original figure. Telephone users regard it as unwarranted, and will not pay it. Consequently there is little telephone communication between these points where the very closest business and commercial interests exist. This unjust tax has been the means of crippling business between these places, instead of fostering it.
The same criticism is to be made against the Sunset company with reference to its treatment of our people when desiring communication with Garden Grove and Westminster. These communities pay nothing for switching privileges to Santa Ana, while Anaheim cannot talk to them without submitting to a toll of 25 cents. Yet we did not always have to pay this charge; in fact we had no impost placed upon our messages to these outlying points until some six months ago, when the direct line between this city and these two progressive communities was put out of service
That the service given by the Sunset company is and has all almiserably inferior is recognized, yet its many infirmities have been passed over did the company not show its hostility to this phones have been out of account of one cause and for ten days at a time, the bills came in on the discount was entertained breach in the service. THOSE MYSTERIOUS RAPPINGS
Mysterious spirit rappings continue to be heard in the office of our esteemed prohibition contemporary, the Santa Ana Register. It becomes plainer and plainer that the political spirit of Jeems McFadden has returned to earth, indicating that it has not secured rest in the infernal regions. The view is shared by men of scientific attainments that Jim’s spirit tried to take a fall out of the devil regarding the manipulation of affairs below, and the recent appearance of Satan, in Mr. Opper’s pictures, inclines one to the belief that Jim’s spirit for a time secured the upper hand and ran Satan out of hell. His satanic majesty seems, however, later to have returned, with reinforcements, with the result that Jim’s spirit, chased out of the infernal regions, is now back at Santa Ana, giving vent to its feelings in mysterious rappings behind the plaster, which are interpreted to denote its anxiety for somebody to take the cover off. Do you follow us?
In Saturday’s Register the spirit of the departed political boss raps as follows:
“Are you going to accept an old party nominee regardless of his principles, regardless of his ideas of law, regardless of whether or not he will enforce the laws you put into effect.”
Never, Jim, never, on our word! We shall be guided by the spirit rappings, by the advice of the pro-

Never, Jim, never, on our word! We shall be guided by the spirit rappings, by the advice of the prohibition executive committee, or by orders from Dr. Chapman direct.
Here's what the spirit raps again:
"Do you consider that a national party has a right to dictate to you whom you shall vote for in county affairs?"
And again:
"The question is whether or not we will elect officials who will," etc.
The question, we might add, seems to be whether Jim's spirit will be permitted to steal the livery of heaven to serve the devil in. There is little doubt, however, that Jim's spirit will soon cease its knocking. The coming county convention will probably put another nail in the lid. That is the body from which republicans will take instructions; not a self-appointed executive committee and a professional spirit-rapper from the shades of oblivion. Scat!
