FOREST RESERVES OF CALIFORNIA At present the State of California leads all others in the number of its forest reserves and the area of land included within their limits. The people of California were among the first to realize the importance of forest protection and have given their hearty support to all movements looking toward the improvement of forest conditions. All of the great industries, agricultural, mining and grazing, are dependent upon a conservative use of the resources of the forest reserves, and there is no question before the people which is of more importance to their future welfare. Up to June 10, 1905, there had been established within the state fourteen reserves containing a total area of approximately 14,250,000 acres; acreage almost double that included in any other state or territory. There still remains withdrawn from entry a large area from which it is probable several additional reserves will be created, so that ultimately the national forest reserves of California will include about 16,-000,000 acres of land. The reserves differ greatly in the character of lands included within their limits, and in their importance to the different interests of the state. The first and most urgent demand for the creation of forest reserves was from Southern California where the future prosperity of almost the entire commonwealth depends upon the protection and pro- which the presence of different varieties of brush or chaparrel, the destruction of former fire or other causes, the protection which it furnishes water supply and its value to erosion of the soil. Extensive experiments have made in tree planting covered areas, and much information has been gained gard to the adaptability of ferent species of conifers including the treeless areas. The studies and experiments be continued and the ultimate sult, undoubtedly, will be the thorough knowledge necessary sure success in the future ment of forest conditions. The greatest menace to these southern reserves is the prevention of and against fire, has been the cult problem in their man. It is of vital importance great destruction from this realized, and that campers and stockmen, who enter serves, should use every p to avoid any possibility of a forest fire to start from the fires. If the people are on this regard, progress in the ment of conditions will therefore every good citizen give his hearty support to officers, and do his part moulding a strong sentiment of forest protection. The first and most urgent demand for the creation of forest reserves was from Southern California where the future prosperity of almost the entire commonwealth depends upon the protection and proper use of the mountain lands which form the source of water supply needed for irrigation of the adjacent agricultural lands. The San Bernardino, San Gabriel, San Jacinto, Trabuco Canyon, and Santa Barbara forest reserves are of greatest importance as conservors of the water supply, and of least importance for lumbering, grazing and mining. Only a small proportion of the area of these reserves is covered with forest which produces merchantable timber, and owing to the extreme necessity of using every means to preserve the existing forest, and to extend its area, the government has been very conservative in the sale of timber and granting of free use privileges. Only such timber as beyond any doubt could be spared without danger of injury to forest conditions has been allowed to be removed. In granting grazing privileges in these southern reserves, the greatest care has been exercised to prevent any possibility of injury by allowng too much stock or by the manner in which it is handled or distributed on the range. Only cattle and horses belonging to residents, either within or near the reserves, are allowed, and sheep are excluded entirely. During the past two years exhaustive studies have been made of the brush covered areas within these reserves to determine the extent to FOR BOTH One disease of thinness in therefore every good citizen give his hearty support to officers, and do his part moulding a strong sentiment of forest protection. In the Sierra, Stanislus, Tahoe forest reserves, where the main body of the Sierra range in the central parish state, the lumbering and terests advance in importance though the protection of the of water supply is not too garded, the natural condition more favorable and the extinction necessary in the south serves can here be relaxed what. Consequently, the timber can be more fenced off to the mining and terests needing it, and the crop can be more closely without danger to the reservoirs allowance is made for cattle and horses, and on the slope of the Stanislaus reser-grazing is allowed. The quail allowing sheep grazing on portions of the Sierra reserve are reported as best adapted by that class of stock, will be tigated during the year and terests carefully considered final action is taken. Trends been established through Sierra and Stanislaus reser-drining bands of sheep moving between summer and pastures. Every effort will be encouraged the stockmen per use of the forage and sducements will be offered who willingly co-operate with government in the protected improvement of the reserve. Since January 1, 1905, six est reserves have been created northern part of the state, at The Modoc, Warner mountains, Trinity, Klamath, and Peak. These reserves were amined carefully prior to tion and the boundaries h excluded entirely. During the past two years exhaustive studies have been made of the brush covered areas within these reserves to determine the extent to FOR BOTH One disease of thinness in children is scrofula; in adults, consumption. Both have poor blood; both need more fat. These diseases thrive on leanness. Fat is the best means of overcoming them; cod liver oil makes the best and healthiest fat and SCOTT'S EMULSION is the easiest and most effective form of cod liver oil. Here's a natural order of things that shows why Scott's Emulsion is of so much value in all cases of scrofula and consumption. More fat, more weight, more nourishment, that's why. Vive experiments have been tree planting on brushareas, and much valuable action has been gained in rethe adaptibility of the difcencies of conifers in reforestfreeess areas. Studies and experiments will be used and the ultimate reobtutedly, will be to gain the knowledge necessary to incess in the future improve- forest conditions. Greatest menace to the safety southern reserves is fire, and mention of and protection are, has been the most diffidemen in their management. Vital importance that the instruction from this cause be and that campers, hunters, skemen, who enter the reshould use every precaution any possibility of allowing fire to start from their camp or the people are careless in ward, progress in the improve- conditions will be slow, every good citizen should hearty support to the forest and do his part toward a strong sentiment in favor protection. Sierra, Stanislus, and Lake forest reserves, which cover body of the Sierra Nevada the central part of the lumbering and grazing in- accessible merchantable timber averaging 7450 board measure to the acre. In addition to this, there is almost an equal amount of timber which at present is inaccessible, but will become available in the future when the demand is sufficient to warrant the building of roads for its transportation. In the Trinity reserve it is estimated that sixty-five percent of the area has a stand of merchantable timber averaging from 5000 to 50,000 feet per acre. At present this timber is remote from transportation and the only demand upon it is for the local supply of the mines and settlements in its vicinity. The Klamath and Lassen Peak reserves both contain a very large proportion of forest land, but the stand of merchantable timber is lighter, and does not generally average more than 5000 to 6000 feet per acre, although there are limited areas which will produce over 50,000 feet per acre. Only a very small proportion of either of these reserves has been cut over, and their protection and conservative use, therefore, means an assured annual crop of timber to supply the needs of the state in the development of its mining, agricultural and commercial interests. A RELIABLE MEDICINE An opinion That Should be of interest to Every Person in Anaheim So many patent medicines and advertised cures are now offered to the public that our readers should be glad to know the opinion of a man who spent years in handling them and profit by his advice. Our local druggist, Mr. O. A. Mullinix, says, "After having sold drugs, and all kinds and makes of medicines for so many years, naturally we have learned something about them—their value and power to cure, and we want to say to the readers of the Gazette that if the people of Anaheim only realized the real curative and strength-creating power of our cod liver oil preparation, Vinol, we would not have clerks enough in our store to fill the demand for it." Continued Mr. Mullinix, "You see, Vinol is not a patent medicine, and it actually contains all the life-giving, body-building, and strength-creating properties of cod liver oil actually taken from fresh cods' livers, but without a drop of the system-clogging, nauseating oil. Vinol makes rich, red blood, and tones up and invigorates every organ in the body. In the strongest manner we unhesitatingly endorse and guarantee Vinol to increase the appetite, cure stomach troubles, give strength and renewed vitality to the aged, build up pony children and run-down persons, make the weak strong, cure chronic coughs, colds and bronchitis or refund to the purchaser every dollar paid for it. This shows our faith in Vinol, and we can only ask the people of Anaheim to try Vinol on our guarantee." O. A. Mullinix, druggist. THE DEVIL'S CODE. Legend of a Monk, Satan and a Quick Night's Work. Stockholm's public library contains a wonderful work which is called "The Devil's Code" and which, in addition to its extraordinary name, is said to be the biggest manuscript in the world. Every letter is most beautifully drawn, and the magnitude of the work is so great that it seems impossible for any single monk to have done it. The story of the origin of the manuscript, however, not only gives it as the work of one man, but also states it to be the work of a single night. The story runs as follows: "A poor monk had been condemned to death, but was told mockingly by his judges that if he was able to cony January 1, 1905, six new forests have been created in the part of the state, as follows: Doc, Warner mountains, Pluity, Klamath, and Lassen reserves were all carefully prior to their creation the boundaries have been as to include only lands forest reserve purposes. The story of the origin of the manuscript, however, not only gives it as the work of one man, but also states it to be the work of a single night. The story runs as follows: "A poor monk had been condemned to death, but was told mockingly by his judges that if he was able to copy the whole 'Code' between darkness and dawn he would be saved. Relying upon the impossibility of the task, those who sentenced him furnished him with the original copy of the 'Code,' with pen, ink and parchment, and left him. "Death must have been as little liked in the middle ages as it is now, for the monk, forgetting the hopelessness of his task, commenced it. Before long, however, he saw that he could not save his own life by such weak exertions, and, fearing a cruel and horrible death, he invoked the aid of the prince of darkness, promising to surrender his soul if he were assisted in the task. "The devil kindly obliged by appearing on the spot, accepted the contract and sat down to the work, and next morning 'The Devil's Code' was finished, the monk being found dead. The copying clerk from the infernal regions presumably fled away with the poor man's soul as soon as the wicked compact was finished." — Pearson's Weekly.
