FARMERS' INSTITUTE.
The farmers' institute which is to be held in Anaheim on May 4th and 5th, Friday and Saturday of this week, promises to be of more than usual interest, as some of the best speakers in the state on the several subjects assigned to them will be present.
Mrs. M. E. Sherman, well known as the most successful lady farmer in Fresno county, if not in the state, will deliver addresses on "The Flower Garden," and also on "Bacteria in the Household." This may also be called 'Sanitary Housekeeping' and should be heard by everyone.
Prof. E. W. Major of the University of California will give a practical demonstration of the selection of dairy cows. Several cows will be on the ground near the place of facts regarding the destruction buildings and other structures particularly with reference movements of the soil in all of the district affected by the quake. Communications coming such information should sent to Prof. A. C. Lawson State university. Photography the more important phenomenon will be particularly acceptable it is hoped that this information will lead to personal visits parts of the region affected disturbance. The points particularly desired to assist are, the relative intensity of destructive action, the direction throw of chimneys and other objects, and the direction of pipes and chimneys, and the time of the earthquake she determined by the stopping clocks. By collecting such information it is hoped that it would possible to locate the seat of disturbance and to ascertain relation of destructive effect geological formations and geical structure.
PRESIDENT WHEELER of the university definitely announces the summer session of the University of California will be held June 25th to August 4th. The university suffered very badly by the loss of income property.

Prof. E. W. Major of the University of California will give a practical demonstration of the selection of dairy cows. Several cows will be on the ground near the place of holding the institute, which will convene in the Kroeger building (down stairs) on Center street, for the purpose of illustration. This will be an object lesson that no one who owns a cow, or expects to own one, can afford to miss.
Ernest Braunton of Los Angeles will speak on "Street Trees" and street tree planting. Mr. Braunton is the assistant editor of the California Cultivator and also edits the "House Beautiful" and "City Beautiful" in the Los Angeles Times magazine, and will be able to give excellent advice to the people of our growing city.
James Mills of Riverside will tell what he has done with "Cover Crops" of peas, vetches, etc., to increase the fertility of the soil and conserve the moisture of the 2500 acres of orange and lemon orchards which he controls.
Col. J. J. Steadman of Los Angeles will talk on "Good Roads" and tell us how we can better our condition in this respect.
Mrs. A. Basley of Hollywood will give good advice to all poultry raisers.
J. H. Reed of Riverside, who did so much toward getting the department of agriculture to send Prof. G. Harold Powell to this coast to study the problems of fruit decay, will tell of the experiments and the success which has been attained. This is an interesting subject and he should be heard by all orange
PRESIDENT WHEELER of the university definitely announces the summer session of the University of California will be held June 25th to August 4th. The university suffered very badly by the loss of income property in San Francisco fire, the university buildings and their contents Berkeley suffered very little age. The university work continue as usual, as soon as refugees, who are housed in various buildings on the campus have been cared for. Aside from the temporary abandonment of regular university routine, a count of members of the faculty and the student-body being gaged in relief work, there was little permanent effect on the university other than a serious financial handicap, owing to the heavy income property in San Francisco. It may be impossible for the National Educational Association to meet in San Francisco account of lack of accommodation. There will be, however, ample commodations in Berkeley for those desire to attend the summer school. Aside from the pleasing attending courses given by some of the greatest scholars and teachers in Europe and America, the opportunity of watching the construction of a great city should tract an unusual number to year's summer session. All quiries should be addressed to Sutton, Recorder of the Facility University of California, Berkeley.

J. H. Reed of Riverside, who did so much toward getting the department of agriculture to send Prof. G. Harold Powell to this coast to study the problems of fruit decay, will tell of the experiments and the success which has been attained. This is an interesting subject and he should be heard by all orange growers.
C. C. Chapman will speak on "Orange Growing for Profit" and E. G. Ware on walnut culture. Allan Knapp will read a paper on growing chilli peppers, George L. Wagner on potato culture, and D. Gervais on berry culture. Other questions will also receive attention.
GOVERNOR PARDEE has appointed a committee of inquiry into the earthquake disturbance, consisting of Prof. A. C. Lawson of the state university, G. K. Gilbert of the United States geological survey, Prof. Fielding Reid of Johns-Hopkins university, and expert seismologist; Prof. J. C. Bramer of Stanford university, Prof. A. O. Leuschner and Prof. George Davidson of the State university, Prof. Burckhalter of the Chabot observatory, and Wm. Wallace Campbell, director of the Lick observatory at Mount Hamilton. The committee is desirous of having its attention drawn to the more salient
WARM weather is upon us, ing stores have already begun display two-piece suits in windows and the department of agriculture has issued a bulletin the coming of the 17-year low. But congress shows no signs of journing. This is not as it seems. Thrifty members in houses want to be at home later after fences and such jobs of cal farm work. The lowing oceans is wafted across the meadow and the call of the blackbird sounds from the thicket, but rate bill has the senate thief a hard knot and instead of forward to an adjournment by 15th, there is now talk of a session to June 1st or perhaps the next of July. There are several things to be considered before an adjournment can be thought of. The bill must be gotten out of the hands this can be done either by stifling it out or by lining for a vote before either side is allowed to throw the bill into contention. It looks now as though might still be weary weeks ahead and that the session

The house is practically ready for adjournment now, but the senate is
stumbling block. It is said
that the conferees on the statehood bill are ready to report and
that there will be an agreement to
leave New Mexico and Arizona out
of the fight and agree on a bill admitting Oklahoma and Indian Territory. There is also in the
background the spectre of the Philippine tariff bill which is not as
dead as some of its enemies wish
and which by devious methods may
be forced to a vote on the floor of
the senate. These three things are
enough to ensure the presence of
congress beneath the great white
dome till well into the hot weather.
And if both houses do not look
alive there may be some awkward
sequal to the threat of the labor
unions to get into politics and elect
a few members who will do business; do it wrong perhaps, but still
get action and not spend weeks and
months in talk to the interruption
of real progress in legislative work.
Politicians in congress ought to
realize the danger better than the
most laymen, and there is certainly
every reason for the active men in
both houses to get together and expedite business rather than to run
the risk of seeing it pass into the

To her other tortures San Francisco must now subscribe to those inflicted by the cartoonist. Here is Robert Carter picturing her first as a sick child carried in the arms of a grim-visaged Uncle Sam, and the next day as a grizzly bear stung with cruel darts. The first is not so bad, but the second! O, Robert, Robert, how could you?
SECRETARY ROOT's coming southern trip is to include the pacification of Venezuela, the consummation of the entente with Brazil, the steering of the Pan American conference and a few other things. And yet some people are unkind enough to allude to it as a vacation junket.
The president has delivered a vigorous dissenting opinion on Judge Humphrey's ruling. Fine chance for his enemies to claim that he is trying to usurp the judicial functions too.
SENATOR LAFOLLETTE has the Indian Rubber Man backed off the board. He stretched his rate bill speech over three days, and the last section in sight was marked "more."
THERE is no need of worrying about what the president is going to do after he gets out of the white house. What is wanted is some one who will guess what he will do before he gets out of it.

IF it is true that Senator Lodge's secretary accepted a campaign check for as little as $250, it is no wonder he got into trouble with that Boston grand jury. They believe in sticking to union rates.
