LOCAL EVENTS Mrs. Grim entertained the Miercoles club at her residence yesterday afternoon. The band will give another of its popular open-air concerts at the First National corner on Saturday evening. C. O. Rust was in Los Angeles a couple of days this week, returning yesterday. Miss Theresa Fay leaves tomorrow for a visit of several weeks with her sister, Mrs. Henry Strodthoff, at Douglass, A. T. W. H. Spake and P. H. Krick went to Los Angeles on Tuesday evening to attend Masonic lodge. They returned on the midnight limited. A. Pierotti was in town from Placentia on Tuesday. He says the country never looked finer and that a prosperous season confronts everybody. John Resh's new building east of the city hall is finished to the second story and presents a fine appearance. The building is of artificial stone and will have a handsome plate-glass front. J. N. Long was in town from Harper yesterday. Harper is a new town on the electric railway line to Santa Ana, and is situated two miles northwest of Garden Grove. The Ladies' Aid of the M. E. church will give an exhibition of "Mrs. Jarley's Wax Works" in the near future. Time and place will be announced soon. Duncan Snodgrass made a trip to the peatlands the first of the week and found considerable land under water as John Hartung made a business trip to Los Angeles on Monday. N. A. Bitner has instituted a divorce from his wife, Clara Bittner. Gus Stern, representative of the Stern & Goodman, Fullerton town Tuesday on a business trip. Mrs. J. P. Hatzfeld entertain Apollo club at a musicale at his dence on Thursday afternoon. W. A. The firm will have a grand spring and summer opening commencing March 22d and continuing till March 24th. Agent Clabaugh of the Santa Fe yesterday received instructions from headquarters that beginning April 1st, 25-ride commutation tickets over that road between Anaheim and Los Angeles will hereafter be limited to four months, instead of 60 days as at present. Ground was broken on Tuesday for Spake & McCollum's new brick building on Center street. The old brick wall which has stood on the line of the property for fifty years was torn down. The front of the building will be of artificial stone and plate glass. The building will have a frontage of 40 feet and 40 feet in depth. The auction sale of lots at Benedict, which was to have taken place on Saturday last, was postponed, owing to wet weather, until Saturday next, the 24th. Full particulars of the sale will be found in the advertisement on the eighth page. A Spanish barbecue will be served free to all. Five lots worth $2000 each will be given away free during the sale. Further time was granted the finance committee to investigate and report on the matter of the proposed sale of the Kraemer reservoir. The pumping plant committee reported that the boring outfit has arrived; but that no agreement has as yet been signed with the contractor. On motion the pumping plant committee was instructed to have a contract drawn up with H. F. Gansner for the boring of the necessary wells. Moved by Hale, seconded by McLauchlin, that the Pumping Plant committee be and the same is hereby given authority to go ahead and bore three wells not more than twenty feet apart, as soon as they are satisfied with the preliminary test wells.* Carried. A communication from the Southern Pacific railway company expressed a desire to co-operate with this company in the changing and constructing of ditches along its right of way from Cypress avenue south and also at Nutwood station. On motion the secretary was instructed to write to the engineer of the Southern Pacific company and invite him to come down and go with our ditch committee to look over the grounds where the proposed improvements are to be made. Watson, a resident of Old Newort, has been expecting daily the arrival of his nephew, Lorenzo Watson from Stockport, Ia., who was coming to make him an extended visit. A letter from a sister near Stockport receiveda day or two ago informed him that the young man had been killed on March 4th in the wreck at Auburn, and that the body had arrived there and been buried. While the newspapers gave an account of the wreck and the names of the killed, Mr. Watson did not happen to see the account and was ignorant of the fact that his nephew had been killed.
