A Pioneer Oil Driller A. F. Darling of San Francisco, who forty years ago was in charge of the first company organized to bore for oil in Southern California, arrived in town on Monday, and was for several days a guest of old-time friends. The company of which Mr. Darling was superintendent was organized in San Francisco and was called the Santa Ana Petroleum company. George Hearst, afterwards United States senator, and father of W. R. Hearst, was one of the stockholders, as was Don Abel Stearns and others. Major Max Strobel was also associated in the enterprise. A well was drilled in Brea canyon within a stone's throw of the big wells of the Murphy Oil company, now the largest producing oil wells in the state. The original well was bored to a depth of 650 feet, when operations were abandoned. It had been the purpose of the company to build a railroad from Brea canyon to Anaheim Landing to transport oil to tide water and thence to San Francisco by vessel. In that year (1866) California experienced its first "oil boom," and seventy wells were bored in different parts of the state. Work upon each one ceased about the time operations were suspended in Brea canyon. Drilling appliances in those early days had not progressed to their present state of effectiveness, and it is believed the Brea canyon well was the deepest one bored in the state up to that time. Twenty-five years later Burdett trip last week and came down with old friends for the first time leaving here in 1867. Needless he found many changes, but same hospitality which made famous a generation ago. On he drove to Brea canyon to work development in the field and his old well. A few feet distance of the canyon's biggest production fifty yards away is a well piled 1000 barrels of oil per day. Mr. Darling returned north day. Twenty-five years later Burdett Chandler took up the work again and achieved no little success. But it was not until the past five years that the big strikes in oil were made in the same location prospected by Mr. Darling forty years ago. CHAPMAN Speaks on Prohibition at Fullerton Sunday Afternoon; on Sunday Closing in the Evening Here. Rev. E. S. Chapman, state superintendent of the anti-saloon league, addressed an audience at the Presbyterian church on Sunday evening which filled the auditorium to the doors. The congregations of the various churches united to hear the apostle of temperance, and prayers were offered by Revs. Mitchell, Markle and Haffen. Mr. Chapman said in part: "The good book tells us there is a time for every thing—a time to sow, and a time to reap; a time to laugh, and a time to weep. There is a time for everything. I was raised on a farm, and am quite familiar with farm work. There is a time to plant corn, and a time to harvest it. I spoke at Fullerton this afternoon in favor of prohibition. The time has not arrived for that in Anaheim. The work of the hour here is to vote for Sunday closing. "You who own property here will find that Sunday closing will tend to appreciate the value of your property that quick (snapping his fingers.) Look at Long Beach. When we first took up the fight against the liquor evil in that town six years ago there was only one saloon there; but it was big enough for a dozen saloons. It was big enough to do as much harm as forty little saloons. I lived in the Rocky Mountain country in my younger days, and would rather fight a pack of forty coyotes than one grizzly bear. "We closed that one saloon and what has been the result? Liquor men say the town is dead. Let me give you some figures to show you how awful conditions exist in that town. In 1900 the population was 3000, now it is 16,000. Isn't that awful? Then it had two school houses, now it has nine. It had six churches in 1900; now it has seventeen. Then it had 6 real estate agents, now it has 300, and every one of them busy as bees, and making money." Many instances were given showing the great appreciation in property valuation and increase of business at the beach town. "Long Beach is the [cleanest town in Southern California, and is growing faster proportionately than any other. Redlands is the next cleanest, and is increasing the most rapidly after Long Beach. "Anaheim has the reputation of being a wide-open town, and this injures you seriously all over the country. There are tens of thousands of home-seekers flocking into California at the present time, and I am sorry to see that this beautiful city is not getting her share of them. Where are they going? They are picking out the clean towns and locating there. That is why Long Beach, Redlands and Riverside are growing so fast. "The one plague spot in Southern cult it will be to eradicate it in the end. "What are you going to your county election? Are you to elect a board of supervisors respect the anti-liquor order are you going back to the county? You elect five sunday Orange county this year. Only county in the state will all of its supervisors at don’t know why it is, but the Now, you ought to see them chosen for supervisors favor of continuing the saloons now in force. You see that your sheriff is wishing your constable too. They have it in their power great assistance to the cause. The district attorney is important official. "In Los Angeles four yelected Capt. Fredericks attorney, and in Ventura One has been a success at the other a flat failure. Men on taking office told us, when tested against violators of Ventura county, to furnish evidence of their crimes. That was a sneaking way ante-election pledges. Men all kinds of pledges before this man did, but after they have a sneaking way them. Capt. Fredericks sort of an official. He temperance people to furnishence of this sort. He says have to do is to hint of the any wrong. That is all I years ago Los Angeles hof social clubs where sold. He has closed them four years time he has collated in fines from illicit dispensaries. "Here in Orange county district attorney who is linda man (District Attorney) He asks temperance people him with evidence, when Fredericks says he cons business to collect this eviOrange county official is a lose in the coming election. Dr. Chapman referred toica as the place where people went to raise hell. He characterized the saloons a damnation and a hell that afternoon he spoke for saloons all the time." going to use this season? no repairs, no wear-and-qualities of a motor, makes It to You metric Co. and Sycamore Sts., SANTA ANA, CAL. a wide-open town, and this injures you seriously all over the country. There are tens of thousands of home-seekers flocking into California at the present time, and I am sorry to see that this beautiful city is not getting her share of them. Where are they going? They are picking out the clean towns and locating there. That is why Long Beach, Redlands and Riverside are growing so fast. "The one plague spot in Southern California, where Sunday opening of saloons is permitted as it is in Anaheim, is San Bernardino. That is the worst hell-hole in Southern California, with its wide-open saloon, its gambling dens, its houses of ill-repute. The Santa Fe railroad company pours a stream of $100,000 per month in gold into that town, and it all goes into the saloons. The savings bank deposits at San Bernardino amount to only $1600, while at Riverside they amount to $750,000. "Sunday closing of saloons will help the home and family. What more sacred thing can there be than these? Many a man will remain at home with his wife and children who now spends his time in the saloon. Sunday closing will aid your churches. It will aid your schools. Many a boy is kept out of school on Monday because his father has spent all his money in the saloon on Sunday. Yes, and many a boy is kept out of school all the time to help support the family, whereas, if his father did not spend his money for drink that boy would not be kept out of school. "I believe as I look into the faces of this large audience that you are going MARCH 22, 1906 NUMBER 22 CITY ELECTION Voters will have no difficulty in selecting material for city trustees from the fine bunch of candidates whose names will appear upon the ticket. It seemed difficult at first to prevail upon citizens to stand for the dignified office, but when the bell taps a fine lot of eight colts will start in the municipal sweepstakes. For the four-year term there are C. O. Rust, Louis Fletcher, Julius Schneider, Louis Kroeger, Joseph Fiscus, J. H. Clabaugh. For the two-year term, Godfrey Stock and Max Nebelung are candidates. For Marshal, H. G. Spielman and N. F. Steadman will make the race. City Clerk Merritt had his Indian sign on all prospective opponents for his high-salaried office, and will consequently canter over the course unopposed. He is in sight of the money. For treasurer, two financial heavyweights, John Hartung and Joseph Helmsen, will be in the race. The contest is developing a beautiful, albeit good-natured contest. There is good material here for the office, and city finances will be safe in the hands of either. Sunday closing of saloons is one of the interesting features of the election, and a warm fight is in progress. A bit of money made its appearance on the Rialto a few days ago, but the amount was not large and was soon exhausted. What are you going to do about county election? Are you going to a board of supervisors who will be the anti-liquor ordinance, or going back to the wide-open county this year. This is the county in the state which elects supervisors at one time. I know why it is, but that is a fact. You ought to see to it that the chosen for supervisors are men in continuing the policy of no now in force. You ought to see your sheriff is with you, and unstable too. They select jurors have it in their power to be of assistance to the cause of reform. District attorney is also a most important official. Los Angeles four years ago we Capt. Fredericks district at and in Ventura Mr. Selfridge has been a success as an official, over a flat failure. Mr. Selfridge office told us, when we pro-gainst violators of the law in a county, to furnish him with one of their crimes. I told him he was a sneaking way to evade his election pledges. Men will make lists of pledges before election as they did, but after they are elected a sneaking way of evading Capt. Fredericks is a different official. He does not askance people to furnish him evidence this sort. He says: 'All you do is to hint of the existence of long. That is all I want.' Four Los Angeles had hundreds real clubs where liquors were he has closed them all up. In years time he has collected $17,000 from illicit dispensers of liquor. He in Orange county you have a attorney who is like the Venman (District Attorney Head.) His temperance people to furnish with evidence, whereas Capt. Fredericks says he considers it his task to collect this evidence. Your county official is a good man to the coming election." Chapman referred to Santa Monica the place where Los Angeles went to raise hell on Sunday. Characterized the saloon as a curse, ation and a hell. At Fullerton afternoon he spoke for closing the all the time. Here in Ana- Engagement Announced Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burdorf and their charming daughter, Miss Mary Burdorf, entertained friends at their home on Thursday evening in honor of Adolph Hammerschmidt, a young gentleman of Lombard, Ill., who has been visiting friends and relatives here for some three months past.
