Lenoir Vines
C. O. Rust has received the following letter from Prof. Newton B. Pierce of Santa Ana, which will be found to be self-explanatory:
U. S. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE,
BUREAU OF PLANT INDUSTRY.
Santa Ana, Cal., Feb. 15, 1906
Mr. C. Otto Rust, Anaheim, Cal.—Dear Sir: I gave Mr. Hiserodt instructions some week or ten days ago to prune the Lenoir vines, and presume he has many cuttings made by this time. If you will drive over there you can get from him 200 cuttings if you now wish them, by giving him your name and stating where you intend setting them out. We wish to keep a record of all places where they are planted so that we can observe them from time to time in our further work on the disease.
Please inform others interested in testing this vine to write for order. Very sincerely yours,
NEWTON B. PIERCE,
Pathologist in Charge.
Adopt Resolutions
In recognition of the work of the California Promotion committee, and the interest it has taken in the Santa Clara valley, the following resolutions were adopted unanimously by the San Jose chamber of commerce:
"Whereas, In November, 1905, the California Promotion committee extended to the San Jose chamber of commerce an invitation to participate in a well devised plan for advertising, developing and promoting in general the counties of the State of California by a course of illustrated lectures. For this purpose the academy of science hall was secured and offered together a footway, were drawn through in enormous buttresses of stone clally constructed on each bank were secured firmly at each heavy beams of timber. A raft similar osier material gave the senger confidence as he crossed cillating bridge that sank danger in the middle and mounted rapids the sides.
The great highway was twenty wide and was built with flags on stone covered with bituminous coal. It was measured out by posts at every league. Caravansari magazines were stationed at eleventh distances for the Peruvian sea on their military expeditions, regular postal service had been organized by which highly trained railroad relieved every five miles, could messages a distance of 200 miles the twenty-four hours. The road kept in beautiful order, the inhabitants of a district being responsible for portion of the highway which served their land. At the same time should be remembered that they no wheel traffic to cut up the lower face of the hard pavement. The considerable irony in the fact that was not till the Spaniards forcibly produced their so called civil into Peru that the famous road ran to fall into disrepair."
How Turks Pray For the Infirm
The following is an exact transference from the Arabic of the official language of Islam, which is used throughout Turkey and daily repeated in the Azhar university by 10,000 Mohammed students from all lands:
"I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed. In the name of Allah compassionate, the merciful! Of all creatures! O Allah! Destroys infidels and polytheists, thine enemy of the religion! O Allah! Make their children orphans and their abodes, and cause their slip, and give them and their factions and their households and their wives and their children and their reliance by marriage and their brothers their friends and their possessions their race and their wealth and lands as booty to the moslems, O Allah of all creatures!""
In all the other religions of even semicivilized nations of the globe we can be no prayer found to parallel cruel appeal of Islam to the spirit inhumanity.
VALLEY, the following resolutions were adopted unanimously by the San Jose chamber of commerce:
"Whereas, In November, 1905, the California Promotion committee extended to the San Jose chamber of commerce an invitation to participate in a well devised plan for advertising, developing and promoting in general the counties of the State of California by a course of illustrated lectures. For this purpose the academy of science hall was secured and offered, together with stereopticon and operator, to the many organizations throughout the state who send their own representatives and pictures to present the attractions of their respective localities; and
"Whereas, The San Jose chamber of commerce has since availed itself of this opportunity, daily lecturing to interested audiences, thereby interesting many in the Santa Clara valley and gaining settlers thereby; therefore
"Be it Resolved, That the San Jose chamber of commerce extend the California Promotion committee a hearty vote of thanks and commendation for its continued activity and unselfish cooperation in the exploitation of and assisting in building up Santa Clara county as well as the general welfare of the State of California."

A Wonderful Moss.
One of the most wonderful menus of vegetable life known to botanist is the "life moss" of Jamestown Barbados and other of the West Indian islands. There are several cities of tropical plants which have markable tenacity of life, but "life moss" and the story of its wily are almost beyond belief. Its users to live under adverse circumstances being certainly beyond that any other known plant. It appears be absolutely indestructible by means except by immersion in boiling water or the application of a reef iron to its roots and branching vines. It may be cut up and divided into finitesimal particles, and then the smallest shred will throw out roots soon grow and form new branches buds. Specimens of this extraordinary plant have been suspended in the air in a dry, hot room; they have been placed in close, air tight dark box without moisture of any sort, and they lived, grew and flourished.

ROADS OF ANTIQUITY
Magnificent Were Those of Mediaeval Peruvians.
In the earliest road on record mentioned by Herodotus as constructed by Cheops, the king, in order that stones dragged along it for his pyraege opinion of the Greek travork of making the road was that of building the pyraege took ten years to construct, composed of polished stones carved on them, but this compare in magnitude with ways constructed by the Peru-ese mediaeval Europe was still of semibarbarous disorganiprincipal roads in Peru ran in the north to Cuzco, the one along the sandy and of coast, the other along the Andes, a region of unengineering difficulty. The second has been estimated 200 to 2,000 miles. It crossed bed in snow, bridged ravines of solid masonry, mounted led precipices by staircases of solid rock and ran in ingalleries along the sides of mountains.
Rivers had to be crossed made with ropes of stout, twisted to the thickness of dry and stretched over the wetimes for a distance of 200 cables swung side by side, and with planks so as to form were drawn through holes buttresses of stone spruced on each bank and firmly at each end to ties of timber. Chamber of Commerce
The newly elected board of directors of the chamber of commerce met in regular session Friday evening. Present, Messrs. Spake, Boege, Armstrong, Clabaugh, McCollum, Yungbluth and Callor. The new board starts out well and all take a keen interest in the city's future welfare.
It was ordered that 500 copies of the new pamphlet descriptive of this city be forwarded to the Los Angeles chamber of commerce for distribution.
It was also ordered that 200 copies be sent to the information bureau of the Los Angeles Examiner, that publication having written for advertising matter pertaining to this city.
Messrs. McCollum and Yungbluth were appointed a committee to interview the managers of the Santa Ana Steam laundry relative to the establishment of a branch of that institution in this city. It has been learned that the laundry intends to open a branch at Orange, where a goodly sum has been subscribed to start the enterprise, and it will be the purpose of the committee to endeavor to secure a laundry for this city.
A communication was received from the Whittier board of trade, stating that a meeting will be held in that city on Thursday, March 1, to consider the consolidation of Los Angeles city and county. A committee from this county will be in attendance, and will urge the Quaker city residents to cast their lot with us, should they sever their connection with Los Angeles county.
Messrs. Armstrong, Clabaugh and Adams, the Arbor Day committee, reported progress and submitted the following program of exercises for Arbor Day, Feb. 22d:
People will assemble at the intersection of Center and Lemon streets at 1 o'clock p.m., sharp.
