CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY VOLUME XXXVI ANALYSIS Returned From Hawaii H. Clay Kellogg returned this week from Hawaii, having completed the reservoir upon which he has been engaged for two years past. The structure cost $200,000, the concrete dam being 140 feet in height. The dam is built in a river, and it was necessary to bore tunnels through adjacent mountains in order to turn the water temporarily out of its channel. The reservoir holds two billion five hundred million gallons of water and will irrigate 7000 acres of land—the way they irrigate in the islands, which is to place a foot of water upon the soil, four times a year. Mr. Kellogg will at an early date take up with the water board the matter of building the Yorba reservoir, which he stands ready to undertake at a moment's notice. "A night reservoir, so called," he said, "will cost three-fourths as much as the reservoir originally proposed, and will be at best merely a make-shift. Directors of the Santa Ana company have said to me that if their company owned the Yorba reservoir site, they would lose no time in beginning work upon it. "The reservoir can be built for the figures set forth in my report. The site has been approved by Engineer Schuyler, whom I regard as one of the good health. "The reservoir can be built for the figures set forth in my report. The site has been approved by Engineer Schuyler, whom I regard as one of the best engineers in the country." Mr. Kellogg was called to town to do some surveying for Mrs. Mitchell, who contemplates the erection of a brick block upon her Los Angeles street property. At the intersection of Center and Los Angeles streets he made an excavation and located the post placed there by Surveyor Hansen when originally laying out the town. The post is of redwood, 12x12, with a ten-penny nail driven in the center. Surmounting the post, which was sunk to a depth of two feet, is another post of smaller dimensions and as a guide to assist in locating the lower one. He found the lady's north line had been correctly fenced off, and that the new Odd Fellows' hall was two inches inside its correct line, which has been disputed of late. Mrs. Mitchell had been told the building overlapped her line and that her north wall on Los Angeles street next to Jos. Backs was two feet out of the way on the adjoining property. His fielding was good, stopping a long drive over the score board in a phenomenal manner. In a long sprint for the ball he tumbled over on the uneven ground, head foremost, but caught the ball, the horsehide falling into his outstretched hand as he lay sprawled out on the carpet of green. Head at short put up a great game and with his running mate, Lewis, on second, covered the territory well. Le Brandt at the backstop was always in the game, his put-out of a runner to second by a beautiful throw, was a feature of the game. Billy Elwell at first put up a splendid game, and got just a little bit the worst of one decision. The runner touched the bag just about the same time Billy did after jumping for a high one, but then the runner usually gets the benefit of the doubt. Ellis and Broadbent, especially the latter at short, are clever men. Both have signed up with Jim Morley and will play with the "profess" this season. Manager Tom Young suffered a serious accident during the seventh innings when in passing behind the batter he was hit by a foul ball, the sphere striking with great force upon the right side of his nose, breaking the frontal bone and shattering the eyeglasses he wore, the fragments of the latter lacerating the fleshy part of the cheek. Tom had been halloed to by one of the players and started to cross the grounds about ten feet from the catcher, when the swiftly pitched ball glanced straight from the bat, striking the unfortunate man as stated and knocking him prone upon the ground. Badly cut and bleeding Tom was assisted to Dr. Beebe's where he was given medical attention. His nose was found to be broken and the flesh severely cut. After being treated the injured man was conveyed to his home at the Oil Wells.
